Evident from the first couple minutes, the story is set in New York. There, a man named Felix (Jack Lemmon) is roaming the streets and checks into a cheap hotel, asking for a room on the top floor. The receptionist complies and the man goes into his room, puts his valuables into an envelope, and heads towards the window. Unfortunately, Felix's attempt to open the window results in pulling his back, forcing him to give up and go elsewhere.
Skipping many details, eventually we learn that Felix and his wife are getting divorced. Sympathetically his friend Oscar (Walter Matthau), who is also divorced and happens to be living alone in a big apartment, offers to let Felix stay with him.
While seemingly a great situation, with Felix pitching in for rent, cleaning the apartment spotless, and even preparing dinner for Oscar, Felix's personality simply drives Oscar crazy.

I loved this movie and would consider placing it as one of my favorite comedies. The style of comedy is simpler and well-thought out compared to most modern comedies I've seen which tend to be raunchy.
I would highly recommend this movie, and note that it's a good one to watch with friends. Given the plot, it might even be a good one to watch with enemies.

The sisters. Haha. When they sat down and started laughing, I began to think about where I had heard that same exact laugh and speech pattern. A moment later, I pinned their voices as the geese, Amelia and Abigail, in The Aristocats (1970)! I later confirmed my suspicions. What I didn't realize is they also did the voices of Maid Marian and Lady Cluck in Disney's Robin Hood (1973).
"It might rain on Friday."
