20130707:
This movie feels like a mixture of a documentary and a war movie. While one can view the historical emphasis of the movie in a positive light, perhaps the execution could have been better. In particular, the movie occasionally uses blocks of text to explain certain events and this has a way of impeding the flow of the movie.

The story consisted of many groups of people and I had some difficulty following their alliances and motives. With that being said, I was able to follow the overall story and found some enjoyment in watching it.

While not as dramatic as Schindler's List (1993), the movie is still thematically heavy. Fortunately, while I didn't realize I'd be watching a war drama, I was in the mood to welcome such a movie. To elaborate, I'm not always in the mood for such a serious movie.

While not as gory as Braveheart (1995), violence and blood can be expected.

Overall, I would mainly recommend this movie to those familiar with the events of the Xinhai Revolution. Secondary recommendations go to those who wish to learn a snippet of the aforementioned events.
