This movie is the third in Robert Rodriguez's Mexico Trilogy. And just as I easily saw the third movie in Sergio Leone's Dollar Trilogy (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)) without seeing the first two, I had no qualms about watching Once Upon a Time in Mexico without seeing the first two movies in the Mexico Trilogy.
After watching the movie, I honestly didn't know what it was about. However, while the movie didn't make sense, it was fun to watch.
Filled with dynamic characters, a touch of craziness, and some violence, the movie reminded me most of Pulp Fiction (1994). But because this movie had a more story-driven plot, I liked it better than Pulp Fiction (which is more character-driven).
Speaking of which, while this movie reminded me of Pulp Fiction and Pulp Fiction reminded me of Sin City (2005), this movie did not remind me of Sin City. The two movies do, however, share actor Mickey Rourke.
On a different note, the trilogy's main character is El Mariachi, but Johnny Depp's character Sands steals the limelight of this movie. In any case, if you're a fan of Johnny Depp or enjoy movies similar to Pulp Fiction, then perhaps you should give this movie a watch. And while there are probably other reasons to watch the film, but I'll leave it at that.

Instant Comments:
Apparently this movie is the third in a trilogy.
"No, I'll shoot the cook."
"Savvy?"
"You're about a quart low."
An hour into the movie and I'm a little confused.
"Look me in the eye, and then kill me."
"Alive and well" Busted knees. "in hell." Boom.
