Moana (2016)

20170626:
Today my family and I started watching Moana but we were using a projector and the projector screen was in a room where the light filtered in and washed out the film's vibrant colors. With that being said, the scene with baby Moana was still absolutely cute! Unfortunately, the viewing conditions were bad and we decided to stop the movie short and postponed watching it at a different date and/or time.

Moana (Auli'i Cravalho)

20170628:
Due to suboptimal viewing conditions, we had previously postponed completion of Moana. With a strong desire to see the film, today my family and I went ahead and watched the film from start to finish.

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 99% match.* I decided to give the movie a thumbs up.

*Technically my sister picked to watch the movie, but I would have eventually watched it on my own anyways and this happened to be the Netflix rating.

Maui (Dwayne Johnson)

20170728:
I enjoyed the movie the first time and it was fun to watch it again. It's not a favorite, but I was certainly up for watching it again.

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 79% match. (I guess I never got around to giving the movie a thumbs up, but I did after I watched it today.)

Gramma Tala (Rachel House)

20170731:
Today I was on an airplane and after watching LEGO Batman I knew I wouldn't have enough time to watch another movie in full. Instead, I decided to only watch the main parts of Moana: essentially watching all the songs and fast forwarding through the dialogue. I took the following notes:
ff to baby Moana, so cute. | Moana grows old, her grandma grows old | I love her grandma's character | "That's good pork." | ff to "How Far I'll Go" | ff to "We Know the Way" + "How Far I'll Go (Reprise)" | ff to "You're Welcome" | ff to "Shiny" | Oh, I saw Sven! Though I only noticed him because I read about it | The crab's front right leg is broken. I thought it was completely missing but it actually has the first two sections. This is most obvious when he's on his back towards the end. | ff to fixing Tahiti, "Know Who You Are" | ff to credits

Tamatoa (Jemaine Clement)

As of 20171226, Netflix determined the movie for me as a 98% match. I gave the movie a thumbs up.

Today I was going through my notes and adding old entries. I was surprised to see that the last time I saw Moana prior to the recent 20240607 viewing was in 2017.

On a different note, I was checking one of my comments and Disney+ weirdly doesn't support ultrawide monitors and so the video ends up showing black bars on all sides. As such, I learned one has to install a browser extension to eliminate a set of black bars (keeping equal aspect ratios, then this means the top and bottom bars). With uneven scaling of 2x along the horizontal and 1.7x along the vertical, I was able to fill my 32:9 screen. This clips the top and bottom without significantly distorting the view (I believe the native resolution is 2.40:1, and so such a scaling would result in a 2.82:1 aspect filling a 3.56:1 screen; in other words a 3:56:1.26 image on a 3.56:1 screen has roughly 20% = 0.26/1.26 vertically clipped.).
Instant Comments:
5: the story is told in a way that portrays (spoiler) a difference between Te Kā and Te Fiti, but it's hard to realize that this story was just being told by Gramma Tala
2: Cute baby scene.
2: Her gramma's part of the song and line.
2: She can't leave without the chicken...
5: hmm I felt I actually understood [today] how the lyrics of this song are relevant to the story (how far I'll go)
2: Beautiful sting ray coming from her gramma
-- watched up to her entering the cave
5: tearjerk. Moana's mom sees her leaving. (and then helps)
2: Wait, where's the pig?

Toddler Moana (Louise Bush)

A: It looked to me as if Maui didn't have nipples. [Various users (on the internet) have pointed out that he does have nipples: seen as dark circles under his tattoo. See also Moana's dad and toddler Moana]
5: tweeting
5: "Maui can do anything but float"
3: Maui's song actually alludes to what he's going to do before he does it.
2: The movie asks the questions that were in my mind, and perhaps other peoples: 1) why didn't the ocean just bring the heart back itself? 2) why didn't it bring him his hook?
2: "If you start singing I'm going to throw up."
5: the Kakamora jump onto the boat drums in sync with the music (or so it seems)
5: hahahaha "it's cold. it's getting warmer"
5: haha "I am still falling"
2: "I'm still falling."
5: Tamatoa's song says the fish are attracted to what glitters and the fish proceed to fall from the water. and Tamatoa says its free food.
5: was one of the transformations a reindeer? a reference to Frozen?
5: hahaha. I don't remember him talking with a sharkhead for so long
5: smile. shark tail. I didn't remember that happening
3: Oh, Maui hypothesizes why the Ocean picked Moana.
5: "Maui, thank you." "You're welcome"
5: Ah the ikorint[?] of Te Fiti [20240802: I assume I noticed that Te Kā had the symbol]
5: ah Moana recognized the pattern
5: "let her come to me" - Moana says to the Ocean
5: I love this song
5: I didn't remember he got a tattoo of her, and right next to his heart too

Credits:
A: Maui initiates the credits with a pull of his hook.
2: Credit version of "How Far I'll Go" was smoother, less jagged.
A: Huh. Wreck-it Ralph in the credits, near the end.
3: Tamatoa references Sebastian from The Little Mermaid. A: "If my name was Sebastian and I had a cool Jamaican accent, you'd totally help me!"
5: Tamatoa still upside down. he says if his name were Sebastian we'd have helped him
5: at the very very end there's some voice that says something
