Piano Concerto No. 2, Allegro, Opus 102 - Jack-in-the-Box
20150809:
After watching Fantasia (1940), I decided to watch Fantasia 2000.

Except for The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Fantasia 2000 features a new set of songs and animation.

Firebird Suite--1919 Version - sprite
Having vaguely recognized some of the animation, I would assume that I've probably seen bits and pieces of the film before. Perhaps it was playing in the background at somebody's house.

Rhapsody in Blue
In any case, among the new pieces, I would have to say I enjoyed Rhapsody in Blue the best.

Instant Comments:
The video opens with the audio of the original film's introduction. Segments from the original Fantasia can also be seen in various panels flying across the screen.

Symphony No. 5
Symphony No. 5 by Ludwig van Beethoven
: This first piece isn't as visually abstract as the first piece of Fantasia.

Pines of Rome
Pines of Rome by Ottorino Respighi
: My goodness. The visuals that accompany this piece are stunning. In fact, I'm surprised that this was released in 1999, because it looks like it could hold its own against the latest Disney and Pixar movies.

Rhapsody in Blue
Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin
: Very clever animation.
: Haha, cute little girl.

Piano Concerto No. 2, Allegro, Opus 102 - soldier and ballerina
Piano Concerto No. 2, Allegro, Opus 102 by Dmitri Shostakovich
: Again, wonderful animation.
: I never read this fairy tale before ("The Steadfast Tin Soldier" by Hans Christian Anderson), but I enjoy the adaptation. According to the Wikipedia page for Fantasia 2000, the original story has a different ending.

The Carnival of the Animals, Finale - it's okay to be different
The Carnival of the Animals (Le Carnival des Animaux), Finale by Camille Saint-Saëns
: I first was made aware of "The Carnival of the Animals" after watching Moonrise Kingdom (2012). Eventually I bought a vinyl recording of it.
: What a cute short!

The Sorcerer's Apprentice - being lazy and violence are bad
The Sorcerer's Apprentice by Paul Dukas
: This segment is taken directly from Fantasia (1940) (and has black borders along the left and right edges).

Haha, "Sorry, Minnie."

Pomp and Circumstance - Marches 1, 2, 3 and 4
Pomp and Circumstance – Marches 1, 2, 3 and 4 by Edward Elgar
: Donald gets to be in a piece!
: It's like they're arriving for The Lion King (1994)! Haha.
: Haha, non-humanoid ducks.
: A lion and lioness lead the exit party.

Firebird Suite--1919 Version - sprite and elk
Firebird Suite—1919 Version by Igor Stravinsky
: The sprite reminds me most of the movie Rise of the Guardians (2012). In particular, her clothing and movement reminds me of Sandman.
: Of course, Rise of the Guardians was released in 2012, so if anything the inspiration on design would go the other way around.
