As Good as It Gets (1997)

Melvin Udall (Jack Nicholson) avoids breaks in the pavement, checks to make sure all the locks to his door are locked, washes his hands in scalding hot water, and brings his own utensils when he eats out. In general, Melvin suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder.

To make matters worse, Melvin doesn't show much care for anybody besides himself. Of course, there's always room for change.

Carol (Helen Hunt) comes in the middle of the night to apologize to Melvin (Jack Nicholson).

20131228:
I enjoyed watching this film and was glad I finally got to see it.

The first movie that came to mind when drawing comparisons was Something's Gotta Give (2003) starring Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton. While Something's Gotta Give has some scenes which were funnier and some which were more dramatic than those in this film, the story was convoluted and failed to have the consistent quality of As Good as It Gets. In addition, I also liked the central characters in this movie more than those in Something's Gotta Give.

Verdell runs to Melvin, preferring him over her owner Simon.

Evidently, this film won more awards than Something's Gotta Give. Jack Nicholson won an Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role, Helen Hunt won an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role, and Greg Kinnear received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. This film also received four other Oscar nominations. In contrast, Something's Gotta Give only saw one Oscar nomination: Diane Keaton (Best Actress in a Leading Role).

I would recommend this movie to anybody looking for a great romantic comedy.

Melvin finds where Carol lives and this is her reaction.

Instant Comments:
Ha! It wasn't his dog!
Hans Zimmer
Oh, he has obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Uses two full bars and scalding hot water.
Doesn't step on the cracks.
Haha. "Always look at the bright side of life."
Lol. That went well (talking with the waitress).
Aww... How cute. The dog also skips the cracks.

Melvin's gay neighbor Simon (Greg Kinnear)

At the 41 minute mark, "What if this is as good as it gets?"
HAHA! "Melvin wait, Melvin wait!" "Shut up, kids!"
"I think of a man. And then I take away reason and accountability." Oh snaps.
[Paused the movie at the one hour mark]
"Mr. Udall?" "Carol, the waitress?"
Haha. "I'm sorry, but... We don't open for the no-sex oaths until 9:00 A.M."
"'Never,' she said. 'Never,' she says."
"To hold fucking... hands for Christ sake."
That's a patient mother.

Melvin spots Carol at the bar.

Hahaha. "Now I want you to do something for me." She just looks at a him and eventually says "I'm sorry, didn't I say, 'What?'" "I thought I said, 'What'."
His packing makes me look efficient...
Ahahahaha. Hahahaha. Oh my goodness. "You look like you're crowded in there." Moves his seat up ridiculously close to the steering wheel for her. (Crotch touches the wheel)
I take Melvin's opinion on how they view their lives. Not everybody has crap lives, but its how you compare your life to other lives that makes it upsetting.
Hehe. "Nice packing."
Haha. The waiter follows her.

Simon, inspired by Carol, begins drawing again.

Hahaha. "I got a real great compliment for you, and it's true." "I'm so afraid you're about to say something awful."
"You make me want to be a better man."
Aww... he was doing so well.
"You're why caveman chiseled on walls."
HAHAHAHA. Comes barging in. "Did you have sex with her!?!" Silence. Carol walks in. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know she was still here." Pause. "Did you have sex with her!?!"
What an interesting combination of three people.
"I forgot to lock the door." Hehe.

Simon's partner Frank (Cuba Gooding Jr.)

Hahaha. "Everybody wants that dear, it doesn't exist."

Seen little bits of this movie before.
