Treasure Planet (2002)

20230303:
After the movie, my son Ben was standing on a block and pretending like he was the protagost at the end pressing the igniter with his feet to get the board moving. Ben called it the "rocket flyer."

Overall, the movie had its moments but something was lacking as well. It lacked both a sense of danger/villainy and awe/adventure. There was some inklings here and there, but not nearly to the degree that makes other movies good. For example, in Beauty and the Beast, Gaston's presence was looming and culminated in a huge threat to the protagonists. As another example, Scar in The Lion King is a villain that within the context of the story helps deliver a wide range of emotions to the viewer. Instead this movie had a more narrow range of emotion. In particular, the planet being a booby trap was just lame.

On a different note, I guess the movie had two glaring plotholes for me:
1) How did the map find its way off the planet?
2) If in his dying breath Flint put out B.E.N.'s memory, how did BEN escape?

After watching the movie, I read that it is based on the novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, but with some changes to the plot. Besides Jim Hawkings being older in this adaptation, Long John Silver was made to be nicer. On that note, an article I read mentioned something similar to what I wrote with respect to "lack of villainy." While the article had a lot to say on the topic, I am quoting the following: "There’s never any real sense of danger in Treasure Planet where Jim is concerned because he and Silver are so bonded."

To be fair there are movies that work without strong/traditional villains. Encanto and Seeing Red are modern disney movies that exemplify this. Or Inside Out. Though I guess these movies strongly revolve around internal struggles. However, seeing as Treasure Planet is an action adventure movie with a clear villain, it would have done well to make use of that villain. Alternatively, the movie could have taken the trope of elevating a character to be the true villain, which the movie sort of did, but was wishy-washy about it.

Something in the back of my mind tells me that I probably saw the movie once before the viewing on 20230303. Though it's also possible that I've only seen bits and pieces of it prior. However, the only detail that felt familiar was the map being placed to activate access to the treasure. As such, I would assume and consider the viewing on 20230303 to be my first viewing of the film.

I like this setup as a display of his skill.
Definitely it will turn out he took Morph instead of the map
the robots name is B.E.N. and my son kept commenting on it (his name is Ben). mainly he doesn't believe that the robot's name is Ben. I guess he thinks names are unique or that a robot cannot have that name.
robot almost sounds like he was voiced by Robin Williams; that would have been great
hehe, "Damn it, Jim. I'm an astronomer, not a doctor" (reference to Star Trek) [apparently the line is misquoted in media as starting with the expletive (which is used by alternate reality McCoy). The original series Leonard McCoy's phrase is simply patterned as "I'm a doctor, not a..."]
hmm they could have cooperated and gotten lots of treasure. the greed is real
