The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010)

20110509:
I remember watching the trailers for this movie last year and being really excited to see it. Then I didn't see it, but heard it didn't do that well. So here I was, watching the movie I wanted to see that I heard didn't do well. My verdict? I agree with popular opinion, it falls below average.

Parts of this film are cool. The movie gets cooler towards the end. The scene that comes from "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" starring Mickey Mouse is definitely a scene I was expecting to see. Although I couldn't figure out why there were so many brooms in the closet.

For the most part, the movie's jokes weren't funny.

The film lacks the sense of suspense and surprise. For example, near the end, when the bull is running after Balthazar, Balthazar jumps behind a car and there's silence. I feel a good surprise would be if the bull somehow sneaked around in front of him. Instead, the car barely jolts after some silence and the moment is lost. The most suspenseful moment I can think of is when the jar was falling. Speaking of which, who buys a jar without opening the lid?

Maybe its personal preference. Maybe what I wanted to see instead of "action, adventure, comedy" was "action, adventure, thriller." In any case, I liked National Treasure (2004) better than this movie. I also like Transformers (2007) better than this movie. Of course this movie is better than Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009). (Which reminds me, I haven't seen the sequel to National Treasure, National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007).

Overall, you might enjoy watching this film if you like films like National Treasure or Harry Potter. Just expect the film to be straightforward and prepare yourself for some cheap jokes. Also don't expect the entire film to be like "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" from Fantasia (1940), Fantasia 2000 (1999), just like you wouldn't expect the entire Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) to be like the ride.

Remark: I don't remember which trailer I saw in theaters early 2010, but it definitely made me want to watch the film. I went to IMDb.com to look up the trailer, and it was one of those trailers that totally rearranges the movie (listed as Trailer #3). The trailer titled "Characters" Trailer is slightly less misleading. In any case, from someone who enjoys watching many movies without having seen the trailers, I would say that holds true for this movie.

Favorite Scene:
Lightning makes music.
Stevie Wonder's "Superstition"
OneRepublic's "Secret"

Second Favorite Scene:
Mop Scene

Third Favorite Scene:
The final battle. Not as cool as Dumbledore versus Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), but cool enough.
