The Lion King (1994)

20211010 Comment:
This movie was either my absolute favorite Disney movie as a kid or the runner-up. After all, it contains what might be the best Disney song: "I Just Can't Wait To Be King". The other songs (with lyrics) were almost as equally memorable.

Young Simba (Jonathan Taylor Thomas) during "I Just Can't Wait To Be King"

Some time between 2004 and 2008, I watched a production of the The Lion King musical. I really like the song "He Lives In You".
I vaguely remember having watched the 3D re-release in 2011, but currently I don't have any record of it. It's possible I have a ticket stub as evidence of watching it.

Finally, I remember playing the video game (SNES) and vaguely remember jumping around the level with fire. Maybe I got to "Be Prepared" (the eighth of ten levels).

Timon (Nathan Lane) and Pumbaa (Ernie Sabella)

So while editing this post, I learned that despite being a mandrill, Rafiki was animated with a long tail (mandrills have short tails). This detail is correct for mandrills appearing in the spin-off tv series The Lion Guard.
Zazu (Rowan Atkinson) and Mufasa (James Earl Jones)

This movie feels so fast paced in plot.

Rating: 5.0/5

Instant Comments: 1a: after the opening song "Circle of Life" ends, the film cuts to black with the movie title, and Ben said - as he often does at actual endings - "The End"
1a: "oh perhaps I should practice my curtsy" - Scar
2: oh Nala and Simba are betrothed
1a: Simba sings "main event" as he pops his head into the leaves to create a mane. coincidence or intentional?
2: "mane" event (he pops out with a fake mane)

Young Nala (Niketa Calame) pins young Simba. "Pinned ya!"

1a: hehe, I love how she says that "pinned ya again"
2: pinned ya. pinned ya again
1a: oh, I didn't remember that Zazu caught up with them
2: fast forward through elephant graveyard cause Ben said it was scary
2: but we watched Be Prepared which was probably scary for Mia
1a: out of all the villainous actions in Disney movies, Scar's murder of his brother is probably the most evil [Cruella certainly comes to mind, but she only succeeded in ordering the puppies to be kidnapped, that she would have been willing to skin the puppies herself is plausible, but with respect to what took place, she didn't]
2: walked away for a moment after Scar is annoucing Mufasa is dead, came back and Timon and Pumbaa have found Simba

Mufasa's brother Scar (Jeremy Irons)

1a: hehe the jokes. brownish gold. top of the food chain.
1a: Zazu sings "It's a Small World
2: It's A Small World After All
2: fireflies... hehe like Princess and the Frog
1a: hehe Pumbaa correctly figures the stars are balls of gas
2: hehe Pumbaa's correct answer
2: why do I always have to save your AHhhh!

Ed (Jim Cummings), Shenzi (Whoopi Goldberg), and Banzai (Cheech Marin)

1a: oh I never realized that Simba stirred up a pile of leaves which is what signaled to Rafiki that Simba was alive.
1a: that's an audio clip in the game: "It starts"
1a: paused after Can You Feel the Love Tonight

Simba (Matthew Broderick) and Nala (Moira Kelly) during "Can You Feel the Love Tonight"

1b: Rafiki tells Simba, it means "You're a baboon, and I'm not." In fact, Rafiki is a mandrill, which is not a baboon.
2: "it means youre a babboon and Im not"
2: i love that scene with the stick. yes the past can hurt.
2: "talk about your fixer upper"
2: scar's hubris ruined his kingdom.
