Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002)

20190617:
This third installment to the Austin Powers movies had higher highs and lower lows than the previous two movies, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997) and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999).

Austin Powers (Mike Myers)

Highs included the addition of Michael Caine as Austin's father Nigel Powers, the role which Mini Me plays throughout the movie, and the initial Austinpussy movie sequence. I also enjoyed the flashbacks which connected Austin with Dr. Evil. At the other end, lows included Beyonce Knowles's weak showing as Foxxy Cleopatra and the movie's general lack of cohesion. To be fair, it's possible that Knowles's performance was limited by the character, who failed to carry the same weight as the first two Austin Powers supporting lead characters, Vanessa Kensington and Felicity Shagwell. In particular, Austin Powers was shown to develop a deep romance with both Kensington and Shagwell, while his romance with Cleopatra was kept more superficial. Of course, it could also just be that my expectation of Knowles was set by the quality of her music (excellent music!!!).

Dr. Evil (Mike Myers)

Overall, the movie averaged worse than the first two films, but I still enjoyed the majority of it and I would still recommend it. Furthermore, I would also desire a fourth film.*

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 98% match. I decided to give the movie neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down.

*I believe Mike Myers displayed interest in making a fourth film back in 2018. However, I'll have to find some sources on this.
