The Six Triple Eight (2024)

20260603:
I read a handful of reviews and I don't have anything different to say. The movie bringing awareness of the 6888th battalion is great, but the story was underwhelming. The trailer I saw set the bar high and the movie fell under that bar. With that being said, the movie had moments with emotional impact. First, I think the movie tried to ambitiously portray multiple aspects of the situation which made the story seem thin. In particular, the movie splits itself across two main characters, Major Adams (Kerry Washington) and Lena Derriecott King (Ebony Obsidian). Perhaps this is possible, but perhaps they could have cleaned up the story. In particular, the initial part of the movie, as shown, seems out of place. It carries meaning, but the viewer won't know that until later, and might not connect the dots back until much later. In particular, it is - from what I understand - not in the correct order of events.

Despite what I wrote above, the movie was certainly watchable, and if it weren't for the excellent trailer which had me expecting more, I might have thought better of the movie. And yet at the same time, it was the trailer that compelled me to add it to My List of movies to watch. I think even if it were underwhelming with respect to the trailer, if it had been shorter, say a 90-minute movie, then I would have liked it more.

Rating: 3.8/5

smile. "When did they start putting rings in..."
huh. some of these lines were quoted in the trailer in a different context
Oprah Winfrey as Mary McLeod Bethune [Susan Sarandon is Eleanor Roosevelt]
huh. she came in about a racial issue and he sidestepped it with orders
hmm... the trailer makes that so much more impactful ("all of them").
this lining up is slightly also more impactful in the trailer. this scene here is more calming or subtly heavy; I guess the trailer has a music track that makes it different
got me a little teary eyed when she talked about needing to show the respect
hmm... still keeping me a bit teared ("I know you don't like me")
wtf. this chaplain is... I don't even know what words; well.. I guess... I could say that initially his sermon confused me since I couldn't believe what he was saying and I assumed I misheard, until he went on
damn. (leaving route)
hmm... I mean like despite inspection, it does make sense to let the soldiers stick to their schedule to maintain the 24/7 process they have going on. forcing the night unit to wake up and people to pause their baths and such would seem like a major disruption
this guy is crazy; none of the detective work they put together being acknowledged
wow. the mother crying over the mail is quite amazing; no idea that a letter can mean so much
