Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)

20220630:
I saw bits and pieces of this movie today at the dentist office. Some parts I only heard the audio.

20220702:
Overall... some humor and interesting moments but... I felt it had some flaws as far as a live action adaptation goes.

Instant Comments:
1b: Paramount logo has Sonic rings
1b: She was basically Obi-Wan Kenobi
1b: 296 MPH. This is fast, but is it really that fast?
1b: Huh. From what we can perceive, the camera speed doesn't decrease when Sonic runs back to get the turtle, but manages to get back to the camera. It's possible if he was running at less than half his top speed.
1b: "No I'm not!"
1b: Speed
1b: Smile. Two cakes
1b: Skipped from 13 minute mark (he plays baseball with himself) to 16 minute mark
1b: 5 PhD
1b: Skipped from 22 minute mark to 30 minute mark (Dr. Robotnik is questioning Tom)
1b: Is that an innocent joke? Wouldn't that damage reputation of a brand? (Amazon joke)
1b: Runs into the Pacific... He did it in less than several seconds [4 seconds]. So the coast wasn't so far away. Where are they located? [Green Hills, Montana; an estimate of the eastern point of Montana to the Ocean is about 300 miles. Assuming he was trying to run topspeed for ths scanner, it would have taken him an hour...; using 300 miles and 4 seconds, he would have been running about 270000 mph!]
1b: This scene (37 minute mark) was the last scene I saw at the dentist
1b: In this bar scene he's running fast enough that everybody remains still except for the sparklers. Makes me think of the X-Men Quicksilver scene
1b: Ha! Start a bar fight was on his bucket list
1b: HAHAHA! "That's brilliant, sir." "Thanks... for nothing."
1b: The dance. [Flossing]
1b: His signature shoes
1b: Dr. Eggman
1b: Seems like an inconsistency with the time the ring portal stays open
1b: I thought Tom would have grabbed the quill
1b: The Sonic theme song on piano perhaps
1b: Ha. $50 to Olive Garden
1b: Also, more importantly, what the heck. The government sent Robotnik after Sonic and then decided Robotnik was crazy and ignore existence of Sonic. A whole town knows about Sonic and... that isn't gonna be a problem?
1b: Oh no, the quill. (I suppose that's how a sequel happens)

Credits:
1b: Tails

The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea (2000)

20220227 Comment:
Previously watched the first third.
20220628:
I think whatever the original movie was rated out of 10, this movie is probably 2 scores down. Checking on IMDb.com, the original has a 7.6 (257K ratings) and the sequel has a 5.5 (19K ratings). Interestingly, several cast members reprised their roles in the film: Jodi Benson (Ariel), Samuel E. Wright (Sebastian), Pat Carroll (Ursula / Morgana), Buddy Hacket (Scuttle), Kenneth Mars (King Triton), Rene Auberjonois (Louis), Edie McClurg (Carlotta). From the list, I also recognize Rob Paulsen (Prince Eric), Frank Welker (Max), and Tress MacNeille (uncredited for Mother Penguin / Baby Penguin); in particular, the three of them are/were voice actors for Animaniacs (2020/1993 series).
Instant Comments:
1b: Resumed at 26 minute mark - I vaguely recall this scene.
1b: Go back to the 23.5 minute mark which I've definitely seen.
1b: That's what her father said to her, "You deliberately disobeyed me."
1b: Morgana moves so fast, not just walking
1b: Hmm. Melody's transformation into a mermaid was not as believable; somehow the breathing underwater bit seems weird; she also complains about wrinkly skin
1b: comedic intervention with a penguin and walrus comedic duo
1b: I think penguins and walruses can swim underwater but have limited underwater time... I'm guessing penguins can last at most 10 minutes and walruses at most 20 minutes. [according to some articles, Emperor Penguins can hold their breath for up to 20 minutes (possibly 27 minutes according to an article citing research done in 2013), but typically dive for 3-6 minutes; meanwhile, one source says walruses "generally breathe at the surface for about one minute after every five to eight minutes," adding they "can stay submerged for as long as 10 minutes," and that a deep dive of 113 meters was documented with a submersion time of 25 minutes; as I continue to scour the internet, facts regarding how long animals hold their breath vary substantially perhaps due to the differences between typical dive times, typical extremes, record extremes, and new evidence over time][general depths for penguins are between 100 and 200 meters, 450 meters might be a general extreme, with 550 meters being the order for record extreme; as such, Atlantica can't be that deep]
1b: Whoa, Flounder grew up and put on some weight (he's a dad)
1b: Interesting, only Triton or his descendents can remove the trident... but why should anyone but him be able to remove it...
1b: Ugh. Are children really so stupid? Despite her mom lying, it's her mom vs a stranger...
1b: Uh... why bring Max?
1b: So her downfall, like her sister, is tunnel vision... lame

Credits:
1b: I definitely like the original movie version of this song more than this credits recording; this recording has some personality to it, but ultimately I like the higher pitch of the original

Dinosaur (2000)

20220625:
Overall, the story of this movie was not good. The protagonist had a certain personality but didn't fully stick to it. There was this opportunity at the end to redeem himself, several events go wrong and there's this odd unhappy event which seems unnecessary. Overall, it's one of the worst Disney feature films, if not the worst.
Instant Comments: somehow feeels fake relative to Jurasic Park.
maybe cause Disney movie, but would have liked the triceratops to put up a fight (or if not in believed triceratops behavior, then stegosaurus) [The Wikipedia says the predator is a Carnotaurus and the prey was a Pachyrhinosaurus]
wait some kind of primates existed during this time? [oh these are lemurs, but still]
hehe. what's he gonna do gum us to death?
[Ada said the pack of predatory dinosaurs were Velocipraptors; according to Wikipedia, she is correct; they seem much smaller than how they're depicted in the Jurassic Park series] [the protagonist is an Iguanodon, other key characters are a Styracosaurus, Ankylosaurus, and Brachiosaurus][I read about the differences between a Brachiosaurus (giraffe-like) and Brontosaurus (elephant-like)][Then there's Little Foot who is an Apatosaurus, which used to be the same species as a Brontosaurus, until in 2015, they were considered different species] probably the water is gone

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)

Instant Comments:
1: [didn't have a chance to read the pages fully]
B: reread book pages, critical to story
B: "magic mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all"
A: singing to the well
A: the Prince hears
A. Started paying attention when Queen talks to the Huntsmen
1: Oh she's a princess.
1: Maybe they'll let me stay. Ha
1: Licking the plates.
1: Nononono into the tub
1: Under the rug
1: Nonono
1: Haha he leaves the key next to the door he just locked
1: This heigh ho song came soon after whistle while you work. I recently identified somewhere in a disney movie (probably encanto) where two songs came so close to each other
1: Jiminy crickets
1: The whole place is clean. There's something dirty afoot.
1: Hahaha. Here take it. Dont be nervous.
1: Which end do we kill? (Not a terrible question)
1: He never tried.
1: Why wash. Taint new year.
1: Lol I do not remember this washing song. I definitrly thought they were just to wash their hands
1: Ben says "look theres a castle"
1: Hmm. What's the point of being fairest. Or well second isnt bad if the fairest is hiding in a forest
1: She wants to be fairest but is so happy about transforming into an ugly hag with a raspy voice.
1: Oh. This song is on one of mydisney soundtracks but i disnt know it was from snow white.
1: Some Day My prince will come follows this other song. Wow. Snow white is packed full of songs.
1: Well she only takes up about 3 beds....
1: Technically as long as snow white is alive though sleeping, the queen would not be the fairest on the land
1: Hahaha seconds
1: Hehe grumpy reacts to kiss
1: "Maybe the old queens got snow white"
1: Hehe the vultures...
1: She doesn't even know this person [oh wait, I missed the beginning, they did meet, and so he sought after her]

Harmonious Live!

20220621:
It turns out this event streamed about an hour and a half before I started watching it.

Aside from host Idina Menzel, the performance features special guest Auli'i Cravalho (Moana).
Instant Comments:
Haha. "For the first time in forever."
Wow. Lindsey Stirling (she looks different; perhaps her hair color). There's also someone I don't know.
Such power (from these soloists)
Wow... the blend of all this music... not just from movie to movie but multiple languages!
Yes! A personal favorite "Go the Distance" (Hercules)! [Also in Italian]
I wonder how much pressure (or not) any particular person feels during such a performance, in particular, this narrator
Hehe. She seemed so happy hitting that gong.
Not enough money to hire Christina Aguilera? Haha. I wonder if the English singer is someone related to the original recording or the live action movie
Huh. When I saw the two men after the Beauty and the Beast tune, I definitely didn't see "Out There" (The Hunchback of Notre Dame) coming
Oh wow, earlier I was quizzing my son on some instruments (violin and guitar) but I had to tell him. But when it came to seeing trumpets, he said "there's two trumpets" (indeed there were)
Hehe. Tiana only shows on the scren a little bit... My son doesn't care so much for people he doesn't recognize
Hmm... I guess that's the length of these Disney firework shows... but I can't help but want more. I also feel there was less story telling in this show than the one I remember seeing at Disneyland way back circa 2004.

Cinderella (1950)

Instant Comment:
1a: She was shivering (cold water shower) [20220620: it's a subtle detail]
1a: Octavious! I never knew. Gus Gus.
1a: Hahaha he chose his own tail. I suppose there's no way to cheat without being caught so it's fair.
1a: Holy moly, Cinderella just did them. Honestly though, how would the stepmother know if they didn't get done again.
1a: Pause after this assignment of chores (from the stepmother to Cinderella)
1b: Resume Cinderella. Her sisters sing and play violin poorly
1b: Lucifer is so cruel, she sings better (pleasing relative to where he ran away from) and he tortures her by dirtying the stairs
1b: Ben laughs at bibbidi boppidi boo song, he always loved such silly words phrases
1b: She didn't even know he was the prince
1b: He didn't do a great job of chasing after her, I suppose he's a gentlemen
1b: She drops the teapot learning of the Prince
1b: Why did the stepmother have to lock it from the inside when there's a keyhole on both sides?
1b: Hmm I mean the Duke did see Cinderella from the back. And the prince would recognize her so he wouldn't actually marry a random girl. [I guess the glass slipper wasn't just small, but beyond the size, it would have perfctly conformed to only Cinderella's feet]
1b: Hehe its like two to three times too small
1b: Ooo I totally forgot about Bruno.
1b: That horse... all Disney animals look alike

Hustle (2022)

Instant Comments:
Hahaha. Fakes to be 22 years old with a 10-year-old son.
Lol. Intentionally leveraging the father-son relationship seems unfair.
That's good. I almost thought that Rex wouldn't have mentioned the assistant coach position to anybody.
Oh, the son ended up drafting Haas.
Damn. That sucks (he has to go back to scouting)
Kind of interesting he's never scouted these kind of games before.
Huh. He managed to get on the bus.
Hahahaha. "You're a fantasy for me."
E.T.
Hahaha. "He's not lost. He moved to Portugal with whore."
WTF. Minimum is 900K!?!
Haha. He made the jump to the top and was only wearing flops
Holy crap, this Vin... He must be out of his mind.
He sacrificed his first class seat (well, likely not a huge sacrifice from his point of view)
Wow. That quit was intense.
"It's you against you out there." (he told his daughter something similar)
He's gonna start making fun of him. ["Your mom's a whore." Obvious]
Whore's get paid, she gives it out for free.
The montage.
Though I feel someone else should insult him.
"Yeah, Rocky!"
WTF. Vince is such an asshole.
This truth moment (Bo learns that Stanley's been lying) wasn't as bad as I expected it would be.
I like how she told him about the next play. Got me teary eyed.
Dr. J calls him the "Boa."
So based on what his wife said, he's gonna fly the kid in?
Hehe. He took number 22
Haha, his wife, not Clyde Dexter. Does it matter?
Hehe, I thought Bo would have turned around on his own.
That's good that he doesn't hold a grudge against the 76ers as an organization

Pinocchio (1940)

Instant Comments:
1a: "As I stood there warming my... myself" haha (as opposed to saying his butt)
1a: Is that the Queen of Hearts? [Alice in Wonderland wasn't made until 1951; because it's not an exact match, the similarity would most likely be due to the general shared animation style across movies, e.g., similar looking animals across all the movies]
1a: neither Figaro nor Cleo like the name
1a: Ha! All those clocks and he says to himself "I wonder what time it is" as he pulls out his pocketwatch.
1a: Jiminy Cricket says "A very real thought but not at all practical." [At which I realize it's been a long time since I've seen this movie. Perhaps not since my childhood]
1a: Haha, a badge.
1a: "Always let your conscience be your guide" she tells Pinocchio.
1a: Jiminy Cricket takes a whiff of the pipe.
1a: Lol his reaction to the lady.
1a: Where is Jiminy Cricket during all this?
1a: Huh. "Hi-diddle-dee-dee, an actor's life for me." (Is this related to "Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)"?) [no, the songs are very different]
1a: Oh Jiminy Cricket is late
1a: Lol, Jiminy Cricket oggles at the can-can puppets [this behavior appears to be a repeating theme]
1a: Why would he have a cage ready? If he specializes in puppets why would he have a cage? [It's later referred to as a bird cage]
1a: Hehe "must be one of the old models"
1b: Oh Geppetto calls out as the carriage passes but the thunder sounds.
1b: Lol plenty. Hardly the amount that Stromboli pulled in.
1b: "They never come back... as boys!!!"
1b: Oh, a bird cage.
1b: Huh, why necessary to lick pencil tip? [20220619: it has to do with how pencils used to work]
1b: Wow, smoking in a kid's film.
1b: Jimini Cricket knows how to read (contrasting with Honest John who couldn't spell Pinocchio and Gideon who only wrote down scribbles when jotting notes)
1b: How will Jimini Cricket breathe [the writers just decide to ignore the issue of breathing]
1b: Lol put it in the wrong end

Bambi (1942)

Instant Comments:
The owl plays an interesting role. For example, he said "You should be congratulated" and then various other animals proceed to congratulate her. Then he also determined when they should all go away.
Hahaha! The one quail comes back and says "Goodbye."
"He doesn't walk very good does he?"
"I'm thumping. That's why they call me 'Thumper.'"
"Eating greens is a special treat. It makes long ears and great big feet. But it sure is awful stuff to eat."
"He's kind of bashful, isn't he, Mama?"
As Bambi watches in awe of the Great Prince of the Forest, and thinking of a similar question in The Lion King, I wondered Bambi and Faline were related. [Apparently Bambi is based on a novel, in which they are first cousins. However, this relationship is through their mothers being sisters.]
"Winter sure is long, isn't it?" "It seems long."
"Come. My son."
Haha. Owl explains "twitterpated" and my son is laughing at various parts.
That quail...
Ben said, "he jumped over the mountain."
"Get up, Bambi. Get up. You must get up. Get up. Get up. Now, come with me."

Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure (2009)

20220610:
Today I joined watching this movie. I started really paying attention in the scene where Tinker Bell is watching some sort of story in the theater and she learns of a way to fix a broken moonstone.
20230113:
I went back to this unfinished post today and wanted to watch the first part of the movie which I missed.

[20230113]
Instant Comments:
2: Wow. Starting this movie today, my first impression is that the animation looks great!
2: Smile. The bees tightning the bolt sounds exactly like a pneumatic bolt driver would (or whatever the tool mechanics use to tighten bolts is called).
2: Ha. The morning Terence wakes Tinkerbell up and she gives him this deadly smile and look
2: Haha. I remember the outcome. She didn't hear what was said and her friend tells her "toll bridge" but its "troll bridge"
2: I caught up with the scene I started watching (around the 27 min or 30 min mark)
2: Hehe. Looks exactly the same. "This one's not for traveling"
2: I skip to from when they lost the balloon to when she acknowledges that it wasn't Blaze's fault that she wasted the last wish

20220610:
Today I decided to finish the movie (technically we had previously finished the movie, but I had only seen bits and pieces).
Instant Comment:
1a: Watched up to the point where Baloo and Bagheera save Mowgli from King Louie [20220610: ~39 min mark]
1b: Resumed movie at about the 39 min mark (it's gone from day time to night time)
1b: "You wouldn't marry a panther would you?" (Bagheera to Baloo)
1b: Baloo tries to ask the same of Mowgli, "You wouldn't marry a panther would you?"
1b: "What!?! A female leading my herd. Utterly preposterous."
1b: hehe. "What we gonna do?"
1b: "You're trying my patience. 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10!"
1b: HA! "He's got a tiger by the tail, he has." [this saying means "something too difficult to manage or cope with"]
1b: Huh, I thought Mowgli would have used his smarts (the supposed advantage of being a man) to create the fire (earlier in the film a technique which King Louie expected to be known by man), but in this version of the story he just got lucky (perhaps being able to hold the stick was Mowgli's strength? kind of silly)
1b: Despite being alive, technically Baloo should be incredibly scratched up
1b: "Forget about those. They ain't nothing but trouble."
1b: I guess in general this movie departs from the message that is to be imparted by the book [the Wikipedia page says "The early versions of both the screenplay and the soundtrack followed Kipling's work more closely, with a dramatic, dark, and sinister tone which Disney did not want in his family film"]
1b: hehe, she drops it on purpose

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)

Instant Comments:
Prior to start of the movie, I knew Anakin will be in charge of protecting Padme and I couldn't help but think whose bright idea it was to do so... despite his training as a Jedi, his emotional weakness is still there and placing him next to Padme...
Amidala is immediately suspicious of Dooku
Turns out Dooku was once a Jedi. Which is interesting because I didn't know one could stop being a Jedi.
It turns out it was essentially Dooku's idea and he carefully set it all up though pretended to establish Obi-Wan. Maybe he's responsible for then getting Obi-Wan to leave...
Holy moly that jump out the window...
Second surprise would be that this droid carries the weight of Obi-Wan
While I imagine Obi-Wan being able to use the force. I feel like some drop with the craft would make it more realistic. [20220611: that is to say, if the craft moves downward to ease with the deceleration]
Lol the timing of Anakin's drop must be incredible use of the Force.
Lol Obi-Wan retrieves the saber.
Oh a changeling. So her face did change during the flight
Ooo Obi-Wan says his padawan isn't ready
"It's not fair"
Lol, what a creep. "Please don't look at me like that" "Why not?" "It makes me uncomfortable" "Sorry, Milady" (continues to look onward with a creepy look)
Huh... somewhat silly statement. "If it doesn't appear in our records it doesn't exist"
This sand line doesn't seem so bad starting with Padme's comment about sand. Though the rest of the conversation is still awkward
The music stopped in sync with when she said no
Boba Fett

Wait what? He had kissed her.
Foreshadowing. It would destroy us.
C-3PO with coverings
Owen Lars... that would be Luke's adoptive father? [Yes]
Wow. That's a dramatic fallen head.
Yoda can sense Anakin's pain... wonder if that is Yoda's strength to sense or Anakin broadcasting himself.
Huh. Lars was familiar with C-3PO and briefly met R2-D2.
Amidala insists to help Obi-Wan (I love this white costume she wears)
Then we decided to come and rescue you. Ob-Wan sarcastically replies "Good job."
Haha. "She seems to be on top of things."
What? Some Jedi just carry spare lightsabers?
Hehe all these puns
Samuel Jackson is pretty smart with the purple lightsaber
Huh, the clones helped in saving them (under command of Yoda)
Death star design
Obi-Wan neutralizes the lightning.
Dooku is so skilled (as teacher to Qui-Gon, I guess he must be)
Yoda truly neutralizes the lightning.
Oh wow, Yoda was the teacher of Dooku

Finding Dory (2016)

20220603:
I didn't take any live notes but I enjoyed this movie. It was neat to learn about Dory's past and how she had her own way of succeeding in life.

One observation I had early on the movie was in regards to something her parents asked her which I would have interpreted as knowledge that would have been embedded in Dory's long-term memory. As she wasn't able to answer, it struck me as odd since her condition is explicitly short-term memory loss. Perhaps I have a misunderstanding of the connection between short-term memory and long-term memory.

In any case, I like how they found a way to explain various aspects about Dory from the first film, such as her ability to talk whale and why she sings "Just keep swimming."

It was an emotional moment to see the various lines of shell, but when she saw her parents, no tear reached or filled the eye. I guess the buildup wasn't exactly there. In addition, there was not enough evidence that her parents would have been alive or to what extent they had wanted to see Dory. In particular, there was even one moment in the film where they were talking about Dory and it was never revealed what prompted them to be so concerned as to even have that conversation.

1: Lol. The fish from the first movie roll in and they all get taken to quarantine. They've been in bags all this time. Over a year... surely they would have actually starved to death.

Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers (2022)

20220601:
I started this movie the other day. Today I finished it. Overall, it was a fun film to watch with plenty of nostalgic moments. Two primary elements of the movie reminded me of Who Framed Roger Rabbit:
- genre and style: live-action/animated comedy film (Wikipedia further designates Roger Rabbit as a mystery and Rescue Rangers as an action-adventure)
- portrayal of classic animated characters as actors and actresses who make the movies and shows we all know
Fortunately for Rescue Rangers, the likeness makes sense and the film can be thought of as a modern-day Roger Rabbit, not just in style but possibly in popularity. Well, perhaps Roger Rabbit is such a good movie that it might be a degree or two better than Rescue Rangers, but Rescue Rangers was certainly not a failure.

Instant Comments:
1b: Resume as they leave the building "it's like they knew we were coming"
1b: Oh, cause Dale is broadcasting on social media. Well ambiguously the cop lady. Because back in the garage with Albany [Okay very soon after this comment Chip makes this hypothesis about Ellie, which makes me think maybe it is Putty, that would be the surprise twist]
1b: Lol Paul Rudd (and "Aunt Man" joke)
1b: Haha the disguise puts Chip into his old costume (because Indiana Jones booth) [20220610: in the Wikipedia article for Chip 'n' Dale, a statement in the Rescue Rangers section remarks on this likeness to Indiana Jones: "Chip wears a leather jacket and fedora (much like Indiana Jones), while Dale wears a Hawaiian shirt (much like Magnum, P.I.)."]
1b: How did the kid not age compared to Pan?
1b: Lol the fireworks and mickey head and Disney theme song
1b: Lol "I'm gonna wreck stuff" (not sure if it's a reference to Wreck-It Ralph; Ralph says "I'm gonna wreck it!")
1b: I thought she would have used the extinguisher right away
1b: Ooo, burn. "hey Putty, don't be so fragile" (because earlier he told her not to be so fragile)
1b: Lol the bird is on call
1b: Haha that laugh. "The worst the joke, the longer the laugh."
1b: Hehe they joke about the pop theme song which soon follows [interestingly, I just finished The Little Mermaid where I observed that the movie's end credit song was not a pop theme song]
1b: Hehe Dale stays 3D
1b: Ha Aunt Man
1b: In some prints Dale is 2D
1b: Lol Darkwing Duck [20220610: would be cool]
