20250520:
Overall, a couple good scenes and story but kind of loosely tied together under a theme and just fictional story. I would say for a fictional story, it should have been more exaggerated (I'm thinking John Wick type of exaggeration). I think Donnie Yen's Ip Man series was much more exciting. This movie is closer to a 3.6. Where as the first Ip Man was peak, perhaps 5.0, and declining from there down to 4.0. In which case, maybe this film has to be more a 3.2 or 3.4.
Rating: 3.2/5
Instant Comments:
1a: the scene where he almost singlehandedly takes down a tower of german soldiers was way over the top. unbelievable...
1a: stopped watching when he was shown removing his mustache, after a meeting he had with some people showing some desire to get allies with Master Liu.
1b: resumed at 20 min mark
1b: masked warrior. quite a look. Jet Li had a movie Mask, I recall. hmm i thought. any connection? [Jet Li did star in a movie Black Mask 1996, but it has no connection to Zhen Chen. however Jet Li was Zhen Chen in 1994 Fist of Legend which is apparently a remake of 1972 Fist of Fury starring Bruce Lee, apparently Yen himself also played in a tv series Fist of Fury 1995][20250603: this movie is actually a sequel to Fist of Legend (1994)]
1b: quite a date. it's vlear he's been watching her. but who got more information onnthe date. was she really drunk at all when she pulled the gun? but very nice he turned the question on her. who are you? she provides her real name but of course her real name isnt Kiki so that really doesnt say much
1b: Im gonna guess the protagonist kicks the table (initiating the fight) before the coin falls
1b: these swift fights are satisfying. not drawn out choreography. I think it fits the mood. at least for this second in command guy
1b: does he wear gloves. wouldnt his fists be bruised from fightnig. or what about any possible face shots taken. maybe he's that good
1b: hehe neat execution of him scanning his memories of observation
1b: hehe that's one way to breakup with someone "dont ever come back. or I'll have to kill you"
1b: whoa. "you and you" bang bang. "I still have chips"
1b: hehe break his junk
1b: while in theory they could take him as a group, I wouldnt understand the ego / bravery / stupidity to fight him 1 on 1. like... seeing other people of your skill level lose so brutally... just like think how smart it would be to back off?
1b: smile. okay now a bunch of these persons have fear and back off
1b: I thought the reason he let Zhen Chen go was to fight him 1v1 fairly. and now he just watches as Zhen Chen is weakened in a multiman attack. loke even if he did beat Zhen Chen later. like what kind of conversation would that be. yeah I beat that guy after my men weakened him...
1b: though switching gears, I dont like the execution here because they dont really show much of anything. it's implied somehow he skillfully used the nunchunk to fend off all the attackers... but that was offscreen, weird since what they last showed onscreen he seemed beat
