After watching Clueless (1995), it made a bit of sense to watch Legally Blonde.

Emmett (Luke Wilson) |
More specifically, while Clueless thematically focuses on romance, Legally Blonde thematically focuses on independence, which for me is a stronger, more likable central theme.
In any case, I felt like the predicament prior to the ending was a bit unexpected. Perhaps there could have been at least the slightest bit of foreshadowing to suggest the possibility of it. Of course it didn't keep me from enjoying the film as a whole.
