Between Two Ferns: The Movie (2019)

20190923:
I enjoyed the web series and part of what made the web series funny was that it was easy to suspend disbelief. It was easy to wonder if the interviews were scripted. With the movie, this aspect is stripped from the interviews. With that being said, the interview portions of the movie were still funny, because the movie still captures the awkwardness.

Zach Galifianakis (Zach Galifianakis)

What I hated worse than the above was the weak premise for the film. Somehow Zach messes up, Will Ferrell comes and demands 10 new interviews from him as punishment, but then Zach twists the conversation around and gets a talk show deal out of it. Part of me just wants to believe that I misinterpreted the scene(s), because otherwise it feels like weak writing.

At the end of the day, I enjoyed the movie because it was funny and delivered much of the joy of the web series yet wrapped up in a reasonable story. Overall, if you're a fan of the web series, then I would recommend this film. Otherwise, it's probably one you can skip.

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 99% match.* I decided to give the movie a thumbs up.

*Technically, it's listed in My List as the top choice and labeled "New." The second top choice is a 98% match.

Will Ferrell (Will Ferrell)

Instant Comments:
HA! (right after "Well, they turned the sprinklers off.")
Ha. "Bill or Ted" (Bill and Ted)
Will Ferrell.
HAHAHA. Almost seemed like a noose.
Lol. Zach's shit-lined panty liners
Hahahaha. ("You. Me. Inside." points to himself and then to Zach)
Lol. This exchange doesn't really make sense but it was funny. Originally it seems like Ferrell will punish Zach but the end-result is a seemingly fair exchange for Zach.

Carol (Lauren Lapkus)

Hahaha. "Between two ferns" versus "Between the ferns."
"Aunt Man" (Ant Man)
HAHAHAHA. "No, I'm not a practicing Jew... I perfected it."
Hahaha. Mr. Rogers died. Hahaha. "I mean he had a good life."
*Anal*yze This (Analyze This)
Ha. Cumberbatch gets to have one of those interviews where he pokes fun back at Zach.
Lol. Idiot. (opening his laptop while driving)
HAHAHA. Kick the tapes. "Push it if you have to."

Zach

Smile. Four.
Ha. The camera person.

Credits:
Bloopers.
Paul Rudd is the best.
After the credits, the camera person reveals that she's a student and Zach gets upset. "It could have been in 3D!"

Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (1997)

20190922:
Today I watched what amounts to an alternate ending of the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. In terms of the animation and polish, I definitely like this ending better. However, I read that part of the reason this ending starkly contrasts with the anime's ending is because of the negative feedback received from the anime's ending. While I don't know the exact nature of the feedback, my personal experience was that the nature of the ending was reasonable, but the way the ending was presented was chaotic. Consequently, I would have personally been fine with essentially this movie but with the anime's ending.

Asuka Langley Soryu (Yuko Myamura / Tiffany Grant)

Although I would have been fine with the anime's ending, I feel like my principals align more with this movie's ending. More explicitly, I value individuality. Being a hive mind may be superior from a survival standpoint, but one could philosophically question who is doing the surviving. If your mind is melded with everybody else's mind, who is surviving? Because there is a sense in which you are already melded with the universe whether you are alive or dead.

In any case, I would recommend watching this movie after watching Neon Genesis Evangelion, because it's a good alternate ending to the anime, and arguably the better ending in all respects.

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 99% match. I decided to give the movie neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down.

Gendo Ikari (Fumihiko Tachiki / Tristan MacAvery) and Rei Ayanami (Megumi Hayashibara / Amanda Winn)

Instant Comments:
Seele is attacking. They're doing so well.
Holy crap. These Seele soldiers are ruthless. The people they're shooting basically unarmed.
They just showed a scene where an employee raises his hand like he's surrendering and then a Seele soldier fires at him, and then despite the fact that he's clearly dead, the soldier walks up and fires a couple more rounds into the dead employee.
"Sorry, it's nothing personal."
Shinji is not a likable protagonist.

Shinji Ikari (Megumi Ogata / Spike Spencer)

Ah. This is informative. See, this is exactly the sort of information that needed to be given to the viewers in the series (regarding Adam, Lilith, and Angels)
I think sometimes the show pushes repetition too far.
"That's how grown-ups kiss. We'll do the rest when you get back alright?"
Damn. He's evil.
Oh my goodness. Feels bad. (Unit 2 goes down due to the Spear of Longinus. And the worse part is Shinji is just sitting around like an idiot.
At 42 minutes, it says "To Be Continued" and credits roll. Ugh. Feels dumb. [Skip to about 46:30 minutes to continue.]

Rei + Adam + Lilith

Lol. This idiot just wants to reunite with his wife Yui.
Rei is falling apart.
Okay. That's weird. (he presses his hand onto her breast and then his hand sinks in)
WTF. Spear comes from the moon. [Immediately following scene they explain that's the original spear.]
He says it all depends on Ikari's son (Shinji) now.
@57 minutes: "What do you wish for?" On the one hand, I think this is kind of like what episodes 25 & 26 were portraying, except in a different way.
Uh. What?

Misato Katsuragi (Kotono Mitsuishi / Allison Keith) kisses Shinji

I watched this video explaining the ending of Neon Genesis Evangelion by IGN:

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth (1997)

-- IF YOU'VE SEEN NEON GENESIS EVANGELION, THEN I RECOMMEND IGNORING THIS "MOVIE" --
-- IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN NGE, THEN I RECOMMEND WATCHING EPISODES 1-24 OF IT AND IGNORE THIS "MOVIE" --

Unit 1 (left) and Unit 0 (right)

20190922: (Evangelion: Death (True)2)
Today I watched Evangelion: Death (True)2. Well, technically I watched the first part of it and then realized it was a complete waste of my time.

Evangelion: Death(True)2 is a recap of Neon Genesis Evangelion, but it takes a non-traditional approach and rearranges the events. Perhaps the director intended to convey something new, but I just thought of it as incoherent nonsense.

On a different note, Death & Rebirth is composed of two parts. The first part, Death, is a recap and the second part, Rebirth, would eventually become the first third* of The End of Evangelion. With the release of The End of Evangelion, there's no need to watch Rebirth.** And as I mentioned, Death is such a bad recap, with negligible new material, that there is no need to watch it either.

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 98% match. I decided to give the movie a thumbs down.

*20230303: according to the Wikipedia page, it is "first third" and not "first half" as I had previously written.
**20230303: according to the Wikipedia page, there will technically be differences because the segment in Rebirth is unfinished, while the corresponding portion in The End of Evangelion is polished. As such, a completionist or fan of the series may have a reason to watch it.

20230303 Comment:
Reading the above today I was a little confused. Eventually, I learned the following:
- in 1997, the movie Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth was released. It consists of two parts: Evangelion:Death and Evangelion:Rebirth.
- eventually a second cut of Evangelion:Death was released called Evangelion:Death(True)
- eventually Evangelion:Rebirth was completed, and it makes up the first third of The End of Evangelion
- finally a third cut of Evangelion:Death was released in 1998 called Evangelion: Death (True)2
- Death (True)2 combined with The End off Evangelion is called Revival of Evangelion or Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Feature Film. These two were available individually on Netflix.
Instant Comments:
This footage of Shinji playing the cello is new. It's just a short clip for some credits.
Lol. This audio taken from one episode overlaid on top of this other footage is jarring. In general, the editing is just all over the place.
Watching this was so shitty that I opted to play two matches of League of Legends ARAM while it played.

20190921 Comment:
I finished the series today. I was excited to get to the finish and I was let down. The ending in and of itself is interesting but I felt it was disconnected from the rest of the series. Apparently they produced it in a rush. Doing some reading, there is an alternate ending. On Netflix, this can be viewed by watching Death (True)2* and The End of Evangelion. I will watch them tomorrow.

Even without the ending, I felt as if the show failed to tell a compelling story. In particular, the show had the problem of using concepts and people without first properly introducing them. For example, "First Children," "Lilith," and "Selle." Perhaps, in part, this is due to the director's choice to shift to a character-based story midway through the series.

*20190922: In my opinion, it is not necessary to watch this after watching the television series.

[20190921][20190922 Edit]

Misato Katsuragi

S1:E1
Ha. The year 2015. [The anime was released in 1995]
An "angel"
"No Miss Misato, you don't seem to act your age either."
Sounds like ay-vahn-ghell-lee-an (hard g) whereas I read it as e-van-jel-lean (soft g, though in hindsight I realize that the last part was totally off). Regardless, the way I read it was similar to the pronunciation of the word "evangelism." [Apparently in Japanese it's pronounced like "e ban ge ri on"]
Lol. If a car was actually on top of that elevator, it would not have been able to move out of the way in time.
1=20190919

S1:E2
Ice, snacks, and beer.
1=20190919

Rei Ayanami

S1:E3
Ouch. Feels bad. Got hit a second time after saying "I don't pilot that thing because I want to."
On the one hand, it's true that he'd be to blame for injury, but consider the alternative: the angels lay destruction on the city and likely everyone dies
4th angel.
Ah. Kensuke lays out the logic for Toji
Umbilical cord severed!
I think the good thing about these battles so far is they are not drawn out and fantasized.
1=20190919

S1:E4
Hmm. Shinji leverages the fact that only he can pilot the Eva
It's definitely a lot of pressure on Shinji since he's already aware of Rei's condition.
I didn't expect this show to have so much emotion. (Shinji shouts back to Kensuke and Toji)
I expect he'll decide to stay (that he isn't on the train which is departing)
Heh. They just stand and look at each other for a long while (about forty seconds).
1=20190919

Asuka Langly Soryu

S1:E5
He shows concern for Rei.
Hahaha. Bazoongas.
A simple "Could you move?" Almost robotic.
1=20190920

S1:E6
"He missed?" Hmm. Technically he was on target.
As mentioned in the previous episode, the episode focuses on the story more than the action.
1=20190920

S1:E7
Not sure if the credits changed in a previous episode, but I noticed the credits in this episode seemed to have details not in the credits of the first episode.
"At first it surprised me that you weren't married at your age."
Haha. The red tape involved in shutting down this unit.
"Sometimes you do what you gotta do. You wouldn't want to live with regrets." - Miss Misato to Shinji
Wow. That was intense.
Hmm. Was it Ritsuko? [The following scene answers]
1=20190920 AM Hours

Gendo Ikari rescues Rei

S1:E8
HA! (treat scene)
"Does she still make a fool of herself... when she's sleeping?"
They keep talking about Second and Third Children but I don't think that's been explained up to this point. [So it refers to the order in which the pilots were chosen. The First Child is Rei, the Second Child is Asuka, and the Third Child is Shinji. Note that the Japanese dub uses the plural children. For example, Rei is the First Children.]
Haha. Strong-willed. "You're coming with. Is that clear!?"
He looks like a girl. Actually, in the first episode, when I first saw Shinji, I also thought he looked like a girl.
Lol. Thinking in Japanese.
More strong-willed. "Who's to say you can't without giving it a shot."
Haha. Why exactly is Shinji piloting unit 2?
More synchronization. I guess two heads are better than one.
1=20190920 AM Hours

Shinji piloting Unit 1

S1:E9
Hehe. Asuka and Rei
Ha. "Rei... demonstrate." Rei matches Shinji's playing perfectly.
HAHAHA. Perfect until the very end causes them to blab about their near kiss. [Though it would be fair to say that Asuka baited him.]

S1:E14
New opening credits.
For some reason there's a recaps the episodes.
1=20190920 AM Hours

Asuka piloting Unit 2

1=20190920 PM

S1:E16
"I thought you were going to scold him."
1=20190920 PM

S1:E17
Haha. "Have tea with me." "But I'm not a girl."
1=20190920 PM

Rei's Eva gets it's arm cut off and she feels the pain

S1:E18
Asuka's infatuation with Ryoji is getting annoying
Holy crap... That was intense.
Hmm. Misato messed up big this time. Well, I suppose Shinji's father is partially to blame too. Like personally I would have come up with a plan to dislodge the cell and then neutralize the Angel.
1=20190920 PM

S1:E19
They could program smarter neural connections to have smarter outgoing connections and shutting down incoming connections which are unnecessary to user performance.

Gruesome.

Seele pronounced like "Zeal-la"
Plot twist on Ikari.
This episode does a lot of digging into the past.
Wow. How could she strangle Rei like that?
1=20190921

S1:E22
This episode revolves around Asuka
Asuka accuses Rei of acting like a doll/puppet
Hmm. Does it make sense for the Eva to generate a force that can throw a spear out of Earth's orbit?
Oh, I didn't understand what she meant until the next episode. Asuka said something to the effect of "Of all the people who saved me, why did it have to be her?" I didn't know who she was referring to but I reasoned she was referring to Rei.
1=20190921

Rei

S1:E23
That exchange between Rei and the angel is confusing. I didn't know which one was the real Rei [Apparently this is what went down:
The angel, Armisael, appears to Rei in the form of Rei.
Armisael shares her feelings with Rei.
Rei identifies the feeling as loneliness.
Armisael indicates it doesn't understand what it's feeling.
Armisael then tells Rei she is also lonely.
Finally, Rei sheds tears.
]
[Apparently the imagery used relates to conception, pregnancy, menstruation, etc.]
"It's probably because I am the third one."
1=20190921

Shinji (in Unit 1) takes aim but holds his fire against Unit 3

S1:E24
This fifth child brings a lot of story quickly.
Holy shit, this episode was all over the place. (Unit 1 is holding Kowaru in it's hands for many frames, about 1 minute 10 seconds)
1=20190921

S1:E25
The narrative of this episode is strange.
@14 I feel like they overdid it. Currently in the case of Ms. Misato, I feel bored.
@16 Who is asking the questions?
@17 Why is this episode so different from the other episodes.
@17 Sometimes I feel like the series doesn't prep the story well enough.
Perhaps some partial explanation at the end.

Asuka (background) and Rei (foreground)

S1:E26
@7 I can hear the voices go across left to right or right to left in my headphones
@8 UGH. THIS IS BORING.
@12 Some philosophical bullshit.
@13 Like they just start spitting out a bunch of random philosophical concepts.
Congratulations. WHAT THE FUCK!?

Starsky & Hutch (2004)

20040314:
Today I watched this movie with Kenneth at Metro Pointe.
20190910:
I decided to watch this movie because I've seen it a long time ago and I just finished watching You Don't Mess with the Zohan. Overall, the film had it's moments and a reasonable comedy if you enjoy either Ben Stiller or Owen Wilson. Actually, both Snoop Dogg's role and Will Ferrell's role in the film may qualify a recommendation as well.

Ken "Hutch" Hutchinson (Owen Wilson) and David Starsky (Ben Stiller)

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 98% match. I decided to give the movie neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down.

Today I watched John Carter with my wife. I think it was one of those movies I watched because it's name had become implanted in my mind (perhaps from strong advertising).

Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins), John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) and Sola (Samantha Morton)

In any case, the action was good, but the plot was not. With no sequel in the works, I would not recommend this movie to others.

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 97% match. I decided to give the movie neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down.

Instant Comments:
