Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

20180426:
Over a month has passed since I've seen the movie and I only have one comment: give me the next movie! While the next one won't come out until May 2019, there should be a sufficient number of Marvel movies being released to hold me over.

Tony Stark / Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.)
Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch)

Without further comment, I would recommend anyone who hasn't seen this film to start watching through the Marvel Comic Universe and catch up with the collections of movies that are all connected. For those who want a shorter experience, I would recommend the following movies (because they are related to Thanos and/or the infinity stones): The Avengers (2012), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Doctor Strange (2016), and Black Panther (2018). Then there's some essential remarks:
1) Thor: The Dark World (2013) - mid-credits scene pertains to the Infinity Stones
2) Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) - events in this movie are the catalyst for Captain America: Civil War
3) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) - remark is about Groot: Groot is a little sapling and in the credits he's become a teenager
4) Thor: Ragnarok (2017) - more about the Tesseract.

Thanos (Josh Brolin)
Iron Man and Peter Parker / Spider-Man (Tom Holland)

On a different note, while watching the credits, I had the following thought: (spoiler for Infinity War) Doctor Strange vanishes among the number of people eliminated by Thanos. And yet, he was able to observe 14 million possible futures. (spoiler for Doctor Strange) How does this compare to The Ancient One being unable to see past her death in Doctor Strange (2016)?.*

Thinking about Strange's statement today, I suppose using the eye somehow excluded "equivalent" futures, e.g., all else equal, someone sneezes in one future and coughs in another. It's also interesting to ask how many of the choices that can be made in the different futures are within anybody's control. It's possible that all the futures seen by Strange necessarily involve his personal actions. It should also be noted that although he spent time observing 14 million possible futures, there are likely futures left undiscovered, including those in which they prevail. I also considered the possibility that perhaps he could have placed a spell on the Stone itself.

Thor (Chris Hemsworth)
Groot (Vin Diesel, voice)

Re-examing the scene between The Ancient One and Doctor Strange, apparently The Ancient One was able to see the future concretely, to some extent, up to a certain point in time. However, she still saw possibilities for Doctor Strange's future.

20190303, 20190304:
I rewatched Infinity War and realized that the plot was inconsistent, especially where Thanos was involved. In general, all the action in the movie occurs for the sake of action, but is typically foolish and/or unnecessary.

Peter Quill / Star-Lord (Chris Pratt)

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 97% match. I decided to give the movie neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down.

Instant Comments:
1: Approximate seating around the time of arrival: (starting with the front row) 0|0|0|2|0|2|3|2|4 & saving spots|Ada and myself, plus 3 persons who came right after us|1|3. 8:01 PM PT
2a: He beat the Hulk.
1: Stan Lee is the bus driver. 2: "What's the matter with you kids you've never seen a spaceship before?"
1: "He means get lost, Squidward."
2a: Ha. "Wong you're invited to my wedding."
2a: "I am Groot." "Whoa, watch the language!"

Steve Rogers / Captain America (Chris Evans)
M'Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira), T'Challa / Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman),

2a: Confrontation between Quill and Thor is hilarious.
2a: "Like Kevin Bacon?"
1: Audience claps when Captain America shows up.
1: Lol. Drax thinks he is capable of being so still that he'd be invisible. 2: Hahahaha.
2a: "Yes, but the kid's seen more movies." (Aliens)
2a: Good exchange of dialogue:
Parker : I'm backup.
Stark : No, you're a stowaway. The adults are talking.
Strange : I'm sorry, I'm confused as to the relationship here. What is he, your ward?
Parker : No. I'm Peter, by the way.
Strange : Doctor Strange.
Parker : Oh, you're using made-up names. Um... I'm Spider-Man, then.

Drax (Dave Bautista) and Star-Lord
Loki (Tom Hiddleston)
2a: "Stormbreaker." "That's a bit much."
2a: Mantis jumping up and down (on Titan)
2a: "Kick names, take ass."
2a: HA! "Don't forget, I'm half human. So that 50% of me that's stupid... that's 100% you."
2a: There might be some room for interpretation on the outcomes which Doctor Strange saw. First, it would be reasonable to believe that Strange only focused on certain outcomes and that he didn't truly see all possible outcomes. However, he did manage to see fourteen million six hundred five outcomes and that one of those outcomes was a win. With that being said, it would be incorrect to assume that every outcome has an equal probability of occurring. [We might also assume that Strange would not be able to see outcomes which branch off situations where he dies (c.f., Doctor Strange).]
2b: Chuckle. I had it paused at "How many did you see?" [~@1hr24min]

Spider-Man, Iron Man, Drax, Star-Lord, and Mantis (Pom Klementieff)
Doctor Strange in the middle of examining fourteen million six hundred five outcomes.

2b: "No, this is not love." I didn't understand this scene when I first watch it, because I agree with Gamora's opinion. However, I suppose... it is possible to sacrifice someone you love for something else.
2b: "The Olympics. Or even a Starbucks."
2b: Lol. For some reason I noticed Scarlett Johansson looking at Captain America and up and down.
2b: "And get this man a shield."
2b: Hmm. Thinking about this fight in Wakanda, I know the Wakandans have advanced technology, but additional military support from other countries would have been convenient... Especially considering the world is at stake.
2b: When they open a section of the barrier, they should have concentrated fire at the opening. That would have easily killed a percentage of the enemy. On a related note, they should have a weapon system outside of the barrier. Imagine if bombs were released outside the barrier...

Nebula (Karen Gillan)
Rocket (Bradley Cooper, voice)

2b: Thanos intuitively uses the time stone...
2b: "You should have... You should... You should have gone for the head."
1: Wow, so close to victory but of course it's better to have more plot. 2b: It's worth considering that Strange saw many outcomes, so he must have known most of the events which have taken place.
1: Tense moment when Iron Man seems like he's gonna be killed.
2b: Thanos asks "No tricks" and Doctor Strange shakes his head no, but he could have been lying. Thanos doesn't have any magical powers, so Strange could have easily enchanted the stone without Thanos knowing.
2b: I'm curious about Thanos using the time stone so easily. Strange had to study magic and read a book... Thanos just intuitively activates and uses it. [I read various plausible non-exclusive answers. 1) The gauntlet makes using the stones easy. 2) The green runes are inherent to the stone. 3) Thanos is knowledgeable with magic.]

Gamora (Zoe Saldana)
Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany)

2b: "Tony. There was no other way."
2b: It's interesting because when Bucky disappeared, he dropped his gun. So fine, clothes dissipate but not machinery? Nope: Spider-Man's suit disappears. I suppose it's just artistic license.
2b: The thing about Thano's goal of destroying half of the people in the universe is that (generally speaking) in time it will increase again. It should also be noted that while the snap doesn't discriminate who is eliminated, the outcome may be hazardous. In fact, there is a high probability that in any local region, the subset of people who maintain order are completely eliminated and that region would spin into chaos. Similarly, the ratio of adults to children that remains after the snap can be unstable.
1: I looked over at Ada and realized that she probably didn't know the rest of the story would be a separate movie. It reminded me of when I watched The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. In any case, I leaned over and told her that there was going to be a second movie. 20180427 12:09 AM PT

*Theoretically, (spoiler to Doctor Strange) while the entire scene in Doctor Strange is meant to be interpreted by the viewer that The Ancient One has died, it's possible that she simply was prevented from seeing past that moment and may still be alive.

Loving Vincent (2017)

20180423:
The animation, which was done by painting, was amazing.

[20180423][20230225 Edit]
Instant Comments:
Hand-painted film!?!
Gogaine [20230225: Perhaps I did not know how to spell Gauguin, as in Paul Gauguin]
His ear
What? Why did they tease him?
They show action streaks behind windmill
Reflection in the window
Whoa. Couldn't live up to an older still born!?
28 years old!! Amazing
Van Gogh rain
Sounds like "goph"
Huh. Could have removed the bullet? Weird. The narrative here almost makes it seem like he wanted to die. Like a failed quick suicide turned into a slow death.
Catch the light.
Fisherman/crow. Were either [of these] subjects of his paintings?
It's kind of hard to follow the story (because the plane is loud and subtitles were not available)
Hmm... conflicting stories
Chicken [20230225: Not sure if this was a note about the movie or about food being served on the plane]
Soo... quite a brawl
((What is my style of paiting; how do I find it?))
Interesting development of story with this narrative from other doctor. Like CSI.
Shot by the "village idiot"? (after his talk with "CSI doctor")
She suggests philosophically | there's so many interactions | his choice to hang around w/ drunkard | teenagers got himself killed | or her or her father | result is he's dead
Melancholia (bipolar?) [20230225: it technically doesn't have a modern-day equivalent; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melancholia]
Hmm an interesting final (?) narrative from the doctor
A combination of narratives would say he wanted to die but was shot
8 years, 800 paintings, 1 sold (during his life), posthumously father of modern art
this was a true story?
oh yes, many of these persons were subjects (?)

Power Rangers (2017)

20180423:
This movie was an interesting take of the original Power Rangers. It really went deep into their training. I kind of wish there was more fighting with them as rangers, and maybe a cooler fusion of the Zords.

[20180423][20230224 Edit]
Instant Comments:
Zordon (alien)
Rita
Zeo crystals
The reboot features characters with the same names and suit colors as the original (e.g., Billy weras blue), but they have different ethnicities
I really hope the same Alpha is used. Ayayayayay.
(What is yellow ranger name?)
They gave Alpha a major update
What is today? Monday
65 Million years
How did he learn English!?
Alpha 5
(They're using alien language)
Zordon - pretty cool
hehe "Silence!"
He still says "Ayayay"!
"Deedee" "Trinity"
Smile. Tells the truth.
"Have any of you morphed before?" "Yes, but only in the shower."
"I don't know, Sir. It's disturbance."
"Yeah, Trini." - Alpha compliments Trinity.
Lol. Zack is riding a Zord. Blue background thros it off.
Ay yay yay.
Strange plot twist (Zordon wants to resurrect) Though it could just be a secret motivation, like a ploy of encouragement [20230224: I think this means that Zordon told the rangers something as a means of motivating them]
Zordon's sacrifice
"Yippee kay yay mother..." (stops) [Die Hard reference]
Is teradactyl just [20230224: illegible word]? [oh she's still in the air]
Hehe "hold onto each other"
Rita's expression
How is this Zord combo bigger. "Momma Zord." "Megazord."
Hehe. It's like QWOP.

Mid-credits, the name "Tommy Oliver" is being called, but we only see a green jacket on a chair. Then in the hallway, a locker explodes.

20230216 Comment:
I was transferring old notes and came across notes for this movie. I have no memory of having seen it. While that's not a clear indication that the movie was bad, but I also failed to remember it by the movie poster.

20240125:
Today I started watching this movie not remember that I had seen it already. In any case, about halfway into the movie, I felt what hurts the movie is the amount [...]

Instant Comments:
1: A kid asks Superman, "What's the best thing about planet Earth?"
1: Next up, Batman...
1: "Fear, they can smell it."
1: Hmm. Is Ben Afflect not gonna be Batman in solo movies? That would be weird.
1: A non-butler Alfred?
1: Does Wonder Woman have super speed?
1: "Pretty sure he'll give it to me anyways"
1: "Arthur Curry... the Aquaman"
1: "'Strong man is strongest alone.' You ever heard of that?" "That's not a saying. That's the opposite of what the saying is." [20230216: At face value, it's funny. But today I was curious what Batman could be referring to. There's a quote that reads "A strong man is strongest when alone." The flavor of this quote is different than what Aquaman said. This quote says that given a person is strong, then when alone, he/she will reach or discover the peak of his/her strengths. It does not, however, indicate that a person should be/fight alone. In contrast, Aquaman was indicating to Batman that he would be weaker with teammates]; 2: I started watching this movie and when I got to this scene the trade of dialogue sounded familiar. I thought perhaps another movie used the same exact lines. Going to my blog, it turned out that it was this movie. I totally didn't remember seeing this movie before.
1: So they went with a natural deep voice? Strange.
1: Oh they show the arm movement quickly. I looked away for a blink the first time (Flash)
1: (He also has to mark it light enough)
1: Who the f@#$ is this Steppenwolf character?
1: He was able to leap bounds, they think they could flee on horse?
1: Why is Diana.... oh I think cause she was born a weapon.
1, 2: "We have to light the ancient warning fire." "The fire has not burned for five thousand years. Men won't know what it means." "Men won't. She will."
1: Haha. "Well let's see if she'll take your call." "So it's a she." "It's not a she."; 2: Smile. "It's not a she."
1: Hmm... how did the Amazonians not defend against Steppenwolf?
2: Hmm. Green Lanterns in her story.
1: Smile. "I need friends." "What is brunch?"; 2: Smile. "I need friends."
1: Haha. "What are your super powers again?" "I'm rich."; 2: Smile.
1: Hehe. She knew (the lake); 2: Huh. "If I was going to attack you, I would have done it by the lake."
2: Hmm. It didn't seem like Steppenwolf had to find the first one. Why was the first one free? He seemed to have easily found the second one...
1: "Oh, wow. They just... they really just vanish. Oh, that's rude." - The Flash to Gordon; 2: Ha! After saying it, he basically just vanishes himself.
1: Good advice: "Just save one."
2: I never thought about how Batman has very advanced toys, has guns on his car or other vehicles, but he himself doesn't carry guns.
2: Sorry guys, I didn't bring a sword.
2: Smile. Trips. "Oh, fuck."
2: Smile. "Did he just bail?"
1: "Who in the world will come for us?" Superman?
2: Hehe. She grabs the bug spray.
1: Haha. "Wow! It's like a cave." "Like a Batcave."
2: Huh. Bruce wants to bring back Superman but Diana disagrees
1: Not sure how he conducts electricity but sure...
1, 2: Pet Sematary
2: Ah. They're in the Kryptonian ship and it's just the five of them. Strange that in some cases five is a perfect number for the team, but somehow six in this case would be better. Interestingly, it occurs to me that the original MCU Avengers was also a team of six.
2: HA! "He's confused. He doesn't know who he is." "Pet Sematary."
2: Huh. Clark is able to look at Barry while Barry is running fast.
2: Hehe. A fight in slow mo.
2: Hmm. Earlier Bruce was saying "big guns." Does this mean either Lois or Martha? Maybe both?
1: Hehe the big guns
2: Hehe. "Something is definitely bleeding."
1: Sounded weird: "yes, ma'am"
2: Wait a minute. In the last movie, the dirt on top of the coffin was rising, but that technically was a false hint since he really was dead... [some people think it's just a metaphore while various persons in one Reddit thread hypothesize that
1: Aquaman's soliloquy [haha. he's sitting on the lasso]; 2: I recently watched a YouTube video about "Marvelization of Cinema" where it mentions some moments can be serious and meaningful but there's sometimes cheap humor injected. I don't think this scene counts as that though. It's pretty well constructed with a clear signal about halfway in that the joke has to do with the lasso [though I guess they could have had Aquaman be vulnerable and share his mind]
2: Huh. I think when Batman pops out in the Batmobile, a variation of the classic Danny Elfman Batman theme song is playing - at least that's what it sounds like
2: That was super cool. Aquaman landing down from the sky. But what good is Aquaman on land?
1, 2: "I don't... not..."
2: Superman caught up to Barry
1, 2: Smile: fist bump
1: Bought the whole bank; 2: "I bought the bank"
2: "The whole bank?" "It's like a reflex with me. I don't know."
1: I thought she would refer to the whole team [?]. "all you have to do is look... up in the sky..." (plus more) but she stopped. It was weird. And yet. "The Superman Show"
2: Was that meant to be a double sonic boom?
2: I love that running pose.
Credits: 1: Before credits. Oh Clark. Flying in that race. I read Clark has more of an ability to keep up with Barry by doing that.

Bad Teacher (2011)

20180407:
This movie was playing and I decided to watch it. I probably came in about halfway into the film.

While I missed the first half of the film, the second half of the film was underwhelming, with the exception of some funny moments here and there.

From what I watched, I would not recommend the film.

On a side note, it's unlikely that I would revisit the movie - though I might consider doing so for screenshots.

Ocean's Twelve (2004)

20180403:
I've seen this movie before, and honestly, I didn't really want to watch it again, but I haven't seen the third and I figured it was appropriate to just go ahead and watch the second movie first.

Danny Ocean (George Clooney)

In the end, despite the great performances from all the actors, the movie's story lacked the awe and twist of the first, Ocean's Eleven.

Actually, I thought the premise of the entire movie was weak. Terry Benedict, despite having been insured for the money stolen from his casino, demands that amount back from Ocean's Eleven, plus interest. Where would all that money have gone? Into his pocket? Technically, at that point, he would have been the one stealing from his own casino.

In general, the film left me lost on several points. Some of the same questions I had were asked by someone on an internet forum (and various responses indicated others were confused by the plot as well).

Q: Why did LeMarc willingly give Danny and Rusty the tip-off?
A: Supposedly to both show The Night Fox to not be so egotistic and to get his daughter back. With respect to getting his daughter back, I'd have to admit that Rusty was able to do it tactfully.

Isabel Lahiri (Catherine Zeta-Jones)

Q: So The Night Fox only lost by cheating?
A: Technically, yes. But Ocean's 11 only got wrapped into the game because The Night Fox got them in trouble in the first place.

Q: Why did they go through the ruse of stealing a replica?
A: Because they were being monitored and had to make it look as if they're attempting to steal the egg.

I didn't have these questions, but they were asked and I thought they should be included here.
Q: Why did LeMarc want the egg?
A: LeMarc had stolen the egg in the past and only returned it because his wife made him do so. After his wife passed away, he wished to have the egg back in his possession.

Rusty Ryan (Brad Pitt)

Q: Someone explain the entire movie.
A: Essentially the entire movie revolves around LeMarc pulling the strings. He helps Ocean's 11 get out of their problem with Benedict by taking advantage of his pupil's ego. His pupil, The Night Fox, is offended when his teacher doesn't praise him and challenges Ocean's 11. LeMarc then helps Ocean's 11 win the challenge so The Night Fox has to pay Benedict what they stole and now they're off the hook. The ending implies that The Night Fox will be able to steal it back in due time. LeMarc also has Rusty reunite him with his daughter.

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 96% match. I decided to give the movie neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down.
