Coco avant Chanel (2009)

20100430:
So I didn't know what this movie was about. But by the title, I had my guess. The cast was great. I found comedy in two of the character Arthur 'Boy' Capel's lines. The first was something like, "I've never undressed you before" and the second was "I love how easy it is to undress you." Both I thought could humorously translated to "you are easy." In any case, the movie revolves around how Gabrielle Chanel, or Coco, enjoys being independent, wants to work for a living, and does not find herself getting married. It takes the path of showing a glimpse of her childhood, then her working both as a seemstress and as a saloon singer. I find biographies to be one of those genres, like the genre of emotional sports movies or turning a group of bad seeds into achievers, a genre which is hard to do wrong; though possible, in general, take a good story and make a good movie. And while there is implied sex, the movie avoids any explicit scenes; this seems fitting to the nature of the film.

The music to this movie was good. I didn't notice for Ma vie en rose, but the positions (in French) are on the left and the names are on the right.

20100513 Comment:
When ranking this movie, I referred to it as bland. It's interesting to note that the two movies, Blind Side and Coco avant Chanel, which I stated you can't go wrong with, because they are based on someone's life story, both performed about the same on the RTA and RTM (67%, 6.1 and 65%, 6.1).

Ma vie en rose (1997)

20100426:
So while watching this movie, at first I did not know who the protagonist was nor did I know when the movie was made. Both may have changed how I viewed the movie. But as such, here I give my thoughts after I watched it and perhaps if I ever watch it again, I can give my thoughts again. Note: I ended up watching this movie when asked something like, "Do you want to watch a movie where a boy wants to be a girl?" Though I had barely heard the question, I answered "Yes." I was then told the movie would be in French, which wasn't a problem either. In an case, the movie revolves around one strong theme, and having had enjoyed movies so much more by not knowing what they are about, I would just let that be my statement on what the movie is about. One thing I was confused about was how the roles between the parents changed abruptly in the middle of the movie. Or perhaps I was missing something. Granted, this can happen in a family, so not a big deal.

Some scenes got pretty intense with respect to emotional intensity. But again, part of it was not understanding the context of the movie. I'm not sure how the time period and location factor into the issue at hand. But I feel the theme of this movie, while still a problem, is treated differently 10 years later, at least in media. I liked how the movie ended.

Wedding Crashers (2005)

20100424: (POSSIBLE SPOILERS)
I watched to the scene where Owen Wilson's character gets Vince Vaughn's character to stay by accepting to go on some sort of boat trip. Up until then, the only funny scenes I can remember are 1) at the dinner table (especially the grandma), 2) when Vaughn gets strapped down, and 3) the football scene (but barely). Thus so far, nothing memorable, and the humor is mediocre. I suppose the one scene where a woman Wilson picks ups, Vivian, asks "Would you say you're completely full of shit or just 50%?" Wilson replies, "I hope just 50 but who knows."

I had ranked a bunch of comedies in order to compare my opinion with public opinion. My rankings were nothing like popular opinion. To be fair, I hadn't watched any of the movies I ranked in the context of critiquing them. I have only seen half of Wedding Crashers, and the viewing experience itself was horrible.

[20100428 7:35 AM]

20100820:
So I finally got to watch the rest of Wedding Crashers. Watched some of the beginning and scenes in the middle over. The part I hadn't seen started at around Owen Wilson's character wanting to reveal the truth. In any case, it was a surprise to see Will Ferrell. The part before the ending was okay. The very ending was a nice touch.

Note: I didn't watch the credits. But it was late in the evening, so I didn't mind.

Paris, je t'aime (2006)

20100421:
Different shorts involving love stories and Paris. I can't remember what I was doing, but the first one Caroline had me watch was "Tour Eiffel" with the mime. She thought it would be cute based on how the story was being told by the little boy. And it ended up being quite cute. I watched most of the ones after that one. Maggie Gyllenhaal was in "Quartier des Enfants Rouges," and that was a fairly sad story. Elijah Wood was in a "Quartier de la Madeleine," adding to the group of stories a supernatural romance. But while the last two had people I recognized, there were more touching stories. I just can't correlate the name of the short story with what I watched. For example, I liked the one with the wounded man and the EMT girl. The one that starts out with a man who talks English more than French walking down the street with a girl is a cute little story. But my favorite was probably "Faubourg Saint-Denis" with Natalie Portman. Now I didn't watch the first half of the movie, and I sort of didn't understand the resolution of this short story, but the overall style and flow of the story was super and if I watched it again, I'm sure I would understand and absolutely love it.

James and the Giant Peach (1996)

Partial Overview:
The movie is about a young boy named James who loses his parents and has to live with his two aunts. They mistreat him and have him constantly doing work around the house. The one thing James has to hold onto is the idea of going to New York, across the Atlantic, where his parents had planned to take him prior to passing away.

One day, James meets a man who gives him a bag of magic green things. Unfortunately, James trips and spills the bag and the green things all escape. However, soon after, a giant peach spawns from a barren peach tree and James's aunts make an attraction of it by selling tickets to see the giant peach. One night, James takes a bite of the giant peach and finds a tunnel leading into the peach. He crawls through and is magically transformed. Inside, he meets several bugs and insects: a glowworm, a grasshopper, a centipede, an earthworm, a ladybug, and a spider. Coincidentally, he had saved the very same spider from being killed by his aunts earlier in the story.

After some talking, Centipede cuts the stem of the peach, breaking it free from the tree. While James's aunts are in pursuit, the peach rolls and escapes into the Atlantic Ocean. From here, James finds the brochure of New York City in his breast pocket and remembers his dream to go there. The others are equally excited about the idea and they find themselves intent on going, but with no idea how they'll get there. Seeing the seagulls in the sky, James develops an idea. Centipede grabs hold of Earthworm and baits the seagulls to come. As the seagulls approach, Miss Spider binds them with her web and ties off the other end to the stem of the peach. The peach lifts into the air and the group sail off to New York.

You'll have to watch the movie to see what other obstacles James has to face. Of course, he doesn't have to face them alone, because other bugs and himself are a family.

20100420:
I started watching the movie at the part where Centipede comes out of the ice.

It might be important to note that, like The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), this film is a Disney movie, Henry Selick was the director, Tim Burton was a producer along with Denise Di Novi, and Danny Elfman did the music. Good movie. Too bad I was adamant about finishing homework and didn't watch the whole thing. It wasn't as great as I remember. I like The Nightmare Before Christmas better, but James and the Giant Peach is still a great movie.

Instant Comments:
3a: Killed butterfly
3a: Don't remember this scene with the man
3a: To be honest I forgot the peach is literally giant...
3a: Wow, they charged the father double ("may god forgive you" he says)
2: I had forgotten that the steps on the peach came from the peach rolling over a wooden picket fence.
3b: Resume 37min mark
3b: "Better than a Ladybug"
3b: Worm has peach clumps along his body

3b: Spider likes to be off by herself... though she says in part because the others rightfully fear her
2: Jack Skellington!; 3b: Skellington (taking the compass)
3a: Technically paused somewhere during the scene where they got stuck in the ice, but effectively I was paying some attention until about the 45 minute mark, and I stopped paying full attention at about the 35 minute mark
2: The live action sequences make up the worst parts of the movie. Admittedly, the ending has grown on me, having seen the ending for a second time in the last half year. The songs on the other hand are undoubtedly great. My favorite is "We're Family" then "My name is James."
2, 3b: Haha, "We'll wind up in Jersey!"
3b: Smile. He's right on top of the Empire State Building and doesn't know it
3b: "Please, sir. How do I get to the Empire State Building." "You're on top of it, kid."
3b: Where are they from? England? And now they drove here across the Atlantic? [Yes]

Credits:
3b: Randy Newman
2: First "Good News" plays. Then an instrumental piece that begins with "My Name is James" to end the rest of the credits.
2: When the credits finish rolling, a short sequence comes up. It's of someone playing "Spike the Aunts." Something one could conceivably find at a carnival; 3b: After the credits, an old-fashioned mechanical carnival game is being played with the rhino and the two aunts

A History of Violence (2005)

20100416:
Whoa, this movie was full of surprises, especially because I'm watching the movie wondering, who is the one with a history of violence. Viggo Mortensen kicks ass, but he looks skinnier or wimpier than compared to his role as Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings (2001, 2002, 2003). Ed Harris is awesome, as are most of the other bad guys. The last action scene was sort of lame, and the last scene of the movie was strange. I'm glad I didn't know anything about the movie prior to watching it. Some of the actors and actresses looked funny.

The movie has a lot of good scenes, but a lot of empty space in between. This sometimes caused me to wonder, where is the movie going next? Which is bad. Generally with a movie, I want to have a more consistent idea of where the movie is going. Perhaps there is a twist involved, but at least I have replaced the old direction with a new direction. This movie felt more like three different movies strung together.

Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

20100406:
I love this movie! One major aspect is the music. Absolutely great music. Then Abigail Breslin as Olive Hoover. There are at least three memorable scenes in the movie. There's the one with Dwayne, Olive's older brother; scenes involving the van; and Olive's dance. Of course with the first and the third there is a stronger sense of emotion. There are some other emotional scenes, but I don't think I can refer to them without giving away too much. Steve Carell was a blast. Carell has made so many good movies its hard to remember his first big break. His biography on imdb.com suggests that it started with his role as Evan Baxter in Bruce Almighty (starring Jim Carrey, Morgan Freeman, and Jennifer Aniston).

[20100408]

20101010:
This movie was in the background while I was studying. I love this music! (Haha, which I said in the last paragraph...) Again there's the music. This movie has a good balance of strong, serious, intense scenes and humorous, light-hearted, warm-felt scenes. I think my favorite scene is the one with Dwayne. I'd add to the list of memorable scenes: the magazines; more emphasis on scenes involving the van. I'm a little confused at the direction of the scene between Dwayne and Frank during the Little Miss Sunshine contest. Frank basically says the best parts of life are the hardships. And then Dwayne says life is competition after competition, it shouldn't be that way. I felt Dwayne's personal realization conflicted with Frank's meaningful statement. I'm not saying Dwayne was wrong, it's just that juxtaposing the two statements really made the scene awkward for me. Watched the alternate endings again, without commentary (the first time was "once before on dvd").

When Harry Met Sally... (1989)

20100405:
This movie is a classic. And the best scene in the movie probably makes for one of the best scenes of all movies of all time. You'll know when you see it; you'll know what it is if you've seen it. In any case, the chemistry between Billy Crystal as Harry and Meg Ryan as Sally Albright is great. Absolutely great. Billy Crystal makes for good comedy, Meg Ryan makes for good romance. This movie is a great romantic comedy; an early starting point for both actor and actress.

So I was wondering about the documentary couples, and one of the trivias listed on IMDb.com says that the stories are real stories that director Rob Reiner collected for the film, related by actors. Really romantic stories.

(500) Days of Summer (2009)

20100404:
The word that seemed to wrap up how I thought about this movie is "cute." My initial thoughts were, "how can you have 500 days of Summer?" Yet another movie I watched without knowing what it's about, I thought the movie proceeded well. The order in which the protagonist's relationship is presented to the audience was done with enough contrast here and there to keep interest on how the blanks are filled in. Some of the messages presented in the movie are worth thinking about a bit; just a bit. There are quirky bits, narrated bits, and in general, the movie is something of a Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Stranger than Fiction.

I couldn't pinpoint where I had seen the actor playing the protagonist, Joseph Gorden-Levitt. So he's from 3rd Rock from the Sun. Great show.

I totally didn't remember that Zooey Deschanel was Ms. Edmunds from Bridge to Terabithia (2007). She was also Trillian from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005), which was a great movie, but I watched that too long ago for any of the actors and actresses from that movie to stick in my mind.
