Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)

Instant Comments:
Hehe. Zune.
At first I was like, why is Peter drunk. But then I remembered.
who is this guy? did he appear in the eternals?
"That hurts" "What a pity" (I actually didn't think he would be killed by it)
Oh okay, I was right. The guy flew away.
"Kill a few people"
I paused the movie in the flashback where Rocket is playing with the other creatures and the one creature commented it's good to have friends. During this pause I was working on a task and had this sudden thought that this entire movie could simply be an intricate ploy by the entire group to motivate Peter. Because Peter was really focused on saving Rocket's life.
89P13
"Second-best friend."
"I'm not 50!"
"And maybe I wanted a Zarg-Nut!" "It's too late. They're all gone." (He just casually stand there as they go up)
The magic user creating all those portals effortlessly seems cool and powerful
"Be not as you are, but as you should be."
Sad face. "imperfect clump"
That is so unnatural it's disgusting. (Turtle forced to evolve into some humanoid creature; in theory it's a teenage mutant ninja turtle but... the magical mutation of the ninja turtles feels something more like the transformation of Peter Parker into Spider-Man)
Rocket be smart.
Lol. Colored like the Power Rangers.
Smile. Peter kneels next to Gamora.
Hahaha. Hahha. The mismatched colors for communication lines.
Smile. Nathan Fillion.
Is it really a locker?
Hahaha. "This one."
Poor, Mantis.
Hmm. I would totally think a Quill + Nebula relationship would be fun. ("Sounds more like her!" followed by synchronized commentary and laughter)
Ha! Big smile. "I just nevere noticed how black your eyes were." [Nebula explains] "He... He picked a pretty set."
Hehe. Nebula comments on how Gamora was always like that and somehow she gets the rep for being a bad guy.
Smile. "I'm not that big of an idiot." (that was definitely a surprise)
"I am Groot?" (Nebula's response)
That's an interesting truth. "We won't think about it when we do it."
I love how everyone on the team is on the same wavelength. And it's mildly annoying with Gamora (who understandbly is past Gamora misplaced in the future) yelling in order to further some progression of the story - which I imagine is somehow attempting to actually turn her more into the Gamora we know (but I think such a situation would be lame)
Hmm. Was Gamora always that strong? (She pushed quill into the wall with enough force that he flew into it and shattered whatever screens he was working on... apparently not too essential to the workings of the ship?)
Hehe. Disintegrated the hostage.
"Your friends a moron. I got one of those too. I get it."
Huh. She might be more evil, but I never figured Gamora to be stupid.
"How did you know?" That's an interesting philosophical question. Though a bit uninteresting coming from the creator as it is implied that the creator assumes his intelligence is superior to the being he has created. Of course, it is easy to think of many man-maded items that perform functions which humans cannot (e.g., a car travels at greater speeds than a human can, a computer can calculate many results which a human could not)
Hmm. This creator [High Evolutionary] is twisted in the head. It's particularly interesting though that the creator dropped the question of "How did you know?"
"Counter-Earth"
All these humanoid species are capable of interbreding?
Hmm these peaceful people are capable of voilence.
Hahah. "That is a stupid design."
There are homeless and poor people in this supposed utopia? [soon after there's a scene with a kid beating another kid and Nebula asks, "This is the perfect society?"][Of course, my hypothesis is that world peace or similar is unobtainable globally whenever there exists variance. Where there exists variance there will always be relative. Relative good and bad. Relative rich and poor. Though I imagine this movie will explain why the society isn't perfect.]
This bird creature looks more like old tech, i.e., like Rocket
OIC. Groot snuck in the weapons. Somehow obscuring them from scanners by growing himself around it (when Peter gave them to him earlier)
Rocket gives a familiar sounding scream.
Yikes. Such aggression.
Oh no. That's horrible. Perhaps expected of a backstory but still. (they're all gone)
"As I've done many times before, I'm going ot have to raze it all and start again."
Hmm. Nice of Gamora to have some honor and defend Rocket
Hehe. "Quill and Groot are inside we have to get them out." as Quill and Groot are flying down behind them
Oh my. (Many children in a cage)
"There are the hands that made us. And there are the hands that guide the hands."
Hehe. "I'm not a raccoon."
Was it even connected for the passkey to go through? I don't quite understand.
Hehe Howard in the poker game.
Hehe. "Why didn't you ask?"
Yondu makes a cameo
Nice moment for him to master the arrow
Smile. Good dog.
Hehe. The team lineup. Gamora reluctantly joins. And the little creature
Wow that dislocated head is creepy yet cool
Oh wow, I didn't realize the keycard he built he's had on him this whole time.
Hehe. "Common Name: Raccoon"
As the High Evolutionary comes in screaming. I'm thinking it would be a great end if he's placed in the evolutionary chamber.
Hehe a flap of his face came off.
"His face came off."
Hehe the monkey scratches the women's face up.
"Go babies, go babies, go."
That was hard to grasp. He seemed so close to the edge and somehow got pushed back and had to make up a lot of ground?
"Did that look cool?"
Hehe. Adam awkwardly comes and joins the group hug. Gamora stays out of it
Hehe. She finds herself understanding Groot.
Hehe. The grunt goodbye (to match the similar hello)
Awww. Upgraded vocabulary: "I love you guys."
"I went back and got this for you, Pete."
That's a tearjearker. His grandpa stands up to come greet him.
Hehe. Drax does little more than just shake his head.
Credits:
The credits start with the shot of the original five (left to right): Gamora, Peter, Rocket, Drax, and Groot
Oh, soVin Diesel does the voice of Groot, but a person named Austin Freeman plays the on-set Groot.
Mid-credits scene.
"Britney Spears and KORN."
On the field: Phyla, Kraglin, Cosmo, Adam Warlock, Rocket, and Groot.
The picture at the end of the credits is more or less the main cast and team throughout this movie (left to right): Cosmo, Rocket, Groot, Mantis, Gamora, Peter, Nebula, Kraglin, and Drax.
Lol. Random conversation between Peter and his grandfather

Ahsoka

20231008 Comment:
I finished the last episode of the season last week with Ada. I believe I did not take any notes and I'm trying to recall notable moments or open questions:
- Sabine is able to use the force to recall her lightsaber
- Sabine only used the force successfully that one time and Ezra has enough trust in her to force push him the rest of the way
- Sabine decides to stay behind with Ahsoka (I actually didn't have any inkling that she would, but I'm glad she did)
- Thrawn ditched Morgan Elsbeth. Though she loyally accepts the decision.
- Speaking of Elsbeth, she was given some sort of extra powers by the witches but it didn't really do her any good, nor did the seemingly special blade they conjured. She did seem to put up a good fight. Honestly, I don't even remember how she lost. I only remember the one Nightsister sensing that it happened. So while I'm glad Sabine and Ahsoka triumphed. It was certainly underwhelming. [Watching their fight on YouTube, I'm reminded that Elsbeth even chopped one of Ahsoka's blades! Only to be followed by Ahsoka disarming her and slicing her with both her remaining lightsaber and the weapon. Will Ahsoka be keeping Elsbeth's weapon (Blade of Tanzin)?]
- Shin wants to join these random people? Lead them?
- What does Baylon Skoll wish to do?
- Sabine senses something. It is revealed to be Anakin. I had thought she sensed something in the distance
- Why would Ezra choose to leave the ship in the Night Trooper uniform when he could have just come out with his helmet off?

Overall, the ending was underwhelming. I guess part of the problem was I had assumed this show was a miniseries that would come to a conclusion by its end, and so it was a surprise that it instead ended in a major cliffhanger, setting up for something larger: Thrawn has successfully made his way back and Ahsoka and Sabine are stranded. So perhaps whatever Baylan is seeking will be part of the answer? Is there just going to be a fork in the story where Ezra and Hera take care of Thrawn while Ahsoka and Sabine deal with Baylan Skoll? Though as a sequel to Rebels, which I haven't seen, it would be weird for only Ezra and Hera deal with Thrawn without Sabine.

Worded differently, usually season finales have a stronger sense of closure or cliffhanger, but this season finale had neither. We neither get a strong feeling that this show could be ended without another season nor the strong feeling that there will definitely be another season. Instead we get a weak feeling that the show must continue because there is so much on the table.

S1E1:
1: all the tech and the communication is just a signal & message as opposed to visual communication
1: still bold [or perhaps arrogant is the better word] this captain to approach these persons even if he believed they are not Jedi
1: this actress playing Morgan looks familiar [but I did not recognize any of her works]
1: hmm close call. good thing the robot announced self detonation :p
1: [Grand] Admiral Thrawn. I don't remember who he is. Also I dont remember why a map would give a position of someone even if they move [this reddit thread explains that it isn't really a map to Thrawn; instead it is a map to a place which would be difficult to get to. but separately perhaps with Morgan's power it could track Thrawn's location][20230916: the answer is more clear in later episodes]
1: hehe the droid gets freaked out
1: ah. the map was retrieved from Dathomir [oh actually Arcana]
1: okay... so the plot is being revealed slowly to us. Sabine was Ahsoka's former padowan.
1: Baylan Skoll
1: 50/50 chance Sabines leaves with the map
1: "she's Mandolorian"
1: "I bet your master found you difficult at times"
1: hmm... right reasons wrong consequences
1: hmm. where's the evil apprentice?
A: rewatched end from where she discovers how to unlock the map. because Ada hadn't seen that part. 1: oh yeah I forgot to mention it before. I thought the first time she opened her box that she would rummage a lightsaber
1: a character this rich surely wouldn't be killed or wounded but I assume the evil apprentice would be more skilled for story purposes (I didn't have time to finish my thought as Sabine gets stabbed... and I think that's logical. but in conclusion I doubt she's dead, especually as Ahsoka arrived) [oh actually also because she saw the location of the map which is now gone. so if she died, it be hard for the plot to continue]
A: when she's fighting after she got stabbed she kind of holds up her saber defending her position until the other girl leaves as Ahsoka approaches
1: it seems Sabine is shown staring at a helmet so... I guess that spoils not knowing for sure if she's alive hehe
1=20230827, A=20230902

S1E2:
A: Rewatching the second episode of Ahsoka because Ada didn't watch it yet
1: Ahsoka wants to recover the droid...
1: cryptic answer as to why they are motivated to find Thrawn. he was banished there? bringing him back will start war? they will get power by finding him?
1: smile. lowest aptitude of them all
A: oh, in her videomail to Ahsohka, she said "I'm ready"
1: "I'm ready"
1: "nice haircut"; A: "nice haircut" "it's more me" (in the mural she also has short hair)
1: "take us out... padawan"
1: "to kill her would be a shame, so few jedi left" "sentimental?" "truth"
1=20230828, A=20230903

S1E3:
Very different from what Luke displayed in his connection with the Force.
Haha. "What you said didn't helped"
"A long line of non-traditional Jedi"
Haha. "You win this round." Camera turns back to the cup.
"Are you cross-wired?"
Smile. "Scan complete." followed by a boom.
Lol What a badass. Out in a spacesuit vs. three fighters.
Takes a fighter down.
"Sabine, did you fix the ship yet?"
1=20230904

S1E4:
in this recap, I felt like the one evil apprentice didn't do too well to shoot them down. I suppose at the same time it was Ahsoka flying
"is that a note of fear in your voice?" "experience"
"you will regret this decision"; based on Huyang's recommendation they stay together I would agree.
lol i think once read a meme about their cloaks
she told Ahsoka so sincerely that she could count on her. I thought 80% she would destroy it but I guess I wasn't think about the progression of the story. the gate has to work for the story
interesting overhead shot. what was the location for this?
huh how mysterious... where is Ahsoka. is she gonna get to speak to Anakin?
subtitles say the Vader theme plays
1=20230908

S1E5:
Ada wondered how many episodes there were. I looked it up and learned how many.
I wonder what kind of CGI is involved for Anakin? in this scene it looks a little unnatural
hehe "I told them to stay together"
his name is Jacen. sounds familiar [20230917: yes, so in fact the name comes from Jacen Solo, a character who was in the expanded universe, which has all been categorized as being Star Wars Legends. The executive producer of Star Wars Rebels, Dave Filoni, chose the name in honor and reference of the character Jacen Solo: see the behind the scenes section of the Jacen Syndulla page on Wookieepedia]
Huyang says Jacen's father's name but I didn't recognize it [20230917: apparently those who've watched Star Wars Rebels would understand a lot of the names in this series: Ezra Bridger, Kanan Jarrus, Hera Syndulla, Sabine Wren, and C1-1OP (a.k.a. Chopper)]
young Ahsoka
huh this Anakin in the past looks more natural
huh, a flash of Vader
"I gave you a choice. live or die." "no." "incorrect"
in this shot - after she wakes up - it's much more clear the [organs] on top of her head are a part of her, i.e., directly attached to her head [20230917: I had made a comment in Mandalorian where I said the design choice made it seem as if those organs were just a headpiece]. when she exits the ship she is back to wearing a headband
huh how is she gonna do that? climb inside a whale? [little did I know...]
is there a significance to the helmet being left behind?
Ahsoka looks up a the purgills
lol "get us in"
1=20230913

S1E6:
choice, fate, and force
smile. Huyang's story starts with "a long time ago... in a galaxy far far away"
as they arrive, I wonder how they would get back from where they came from with the map destroyed
hehe the evil apprentice comments "more witches". this must be the third or so time she's made this type of remark about the witchcraft
1=20230921

S1E7:
reference to Mandolorian
the more this guy talks the more I feel he's secretly on the enemy's side
C-3P0 and reference to Leia
well that's one way to know they're in the right place (minefield)
he has a quote about defeat ["One parting lesson, Shin. Impatience for victory will guarantee defeat."][Apparently this is a quote of King Louis XIV]
"I don't have time for this"
black vs white
lol convo between Ezra and Sabine:
Ezra: "What's the plan?"
Sabine: "Here, do your thing." (tries to hand him the lightsaber)
Ezra: "What thing?"
Sabine: "It's your lightsaber. Take it."
Ezra: "You keep it."
Sabine: "What?"
Ezra: "I don't need it. Besides, you've been training."
Sabine: "Very funny."
Ezra: "No I'm serious."
Sabine: "Take it."
Ezra: "I gave it to you. It's yours now."
Sabine: "At least take a blaster."
Ezra: "No, the Force is my ally. That's all I need."
Sabine: "Well, I'm gonna need more than that."
hmm... why would he pull back troops... wouldn't have distracting Ahsoka longer have been better?

The Monkey King (2023)

Instant Comments:
1a: "feel your insignificance"
1a: 5 thousand years
1a: amazing this girl [Lin] knows how to read for a girl from a poor village (they exit hell)
1a: oh no, she's in league with the Dragon King
1b: resumed at 45 min mark, Lin finishes her conversation with the Dragon King
1b: wow, that riddle/challenge was good. in some sense though it was as much a challenge to Lin; as perhaps Buddha would have from the beginning known more or suspected more... as I imagine his ability to observe and understand is vast
1b: 500 years later, Journey to the West [apparently this is the title of the book, og Chinese, where in the monkey King is one of three characters to accompany a monk; according to Wikipedia the west refers to Central Asia and India]

Open Season (2006)

Instant Comments:
watching in bed because I was tired, knowing that I would get sleepy and stop, which I did.
resuming in the evening, I had to take it back to the 22 min mark (they are airlifting the bear to the forest, which is the last scene I recall watching before nodding off)
hehe. he says "I can't remember" (how or where he poops) as he poops
oh he sounds like Kronk which I think is oo I cant remember the name. [Patrick Warburton]
interesting... does Giselle like Elliot?
smile. the f word
"every buddy?"
"bros before does"
dispensable rabbits (snowballs)

Credits:
hehe Shaw is misidentified by the travelers Bigfoot
"No rabbits were harmed in the making of this movie"

Peter Pan (2003)

Instant Comments:
Huh. I don't like how fast this Peter Pan flies.
paused
resume at 10 minutes (same day)
it's weird... the movie is constantly switching between feeling like it has something good and something terrible. such as them flying is cool but certain movements seem unnatural
wow the show stubbed arm, attaching strap, attaching hook
hehe "my kiss saved here"
hwhe "tink did it"
how did they successfully run from the croc?
weird choice for depiction of Princess Tiger Lily
hehe dark mermaids
smile the bear chained as well
Tiger Lily's facepaint washed off
"you are a codfish"
why does pan have to climb out of the water? why not fly out?
Smee breaks the fourth wall. "its all a bit tragic isnt it?"
huh this window scene ("it must always be open") makes me want to read the story
wow, Tink poisoned and dies
did Pan being upset cause the thunderstorm?
Smee figures Pan must be dead due to the weather
huh everyone chanting "I do believe in fairies. I do. I do." even Smee hehe. strange contagious situation (it doesn't really have a reason to it)
hehe Noodler shot dead
hehe. fourth wall broken again
hmm. kids fighting pirates doesn't seem believable - at least not when simply evenly matched in numbers and in direct combat
why didn't Hook kill him straight away...
hehe the term "thimble" comes in handy
smile. "that was no thimble"
"split my infinitives"
uh "may I keep them?"
I don't understand Slightly's circumstance [apparently he came after the declaration to adopt, and therefore technically isn't adopted by the Darlings]

Credits:
in memory Dodi Al-Fayed
Oh I didn't realize the father and Captain Hook were played by the same actor [apparently this is typically the case; though the film did opt to cast a boy as Peter Pan]

Children of the Sea (2019)

20230822:
Netflix determined the movie for me as a 74% match. I decided to give the movie neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down.
Instant Comments:
The animation during the first three or so minutes is amazing
hmm... responded to being tripped...
wow. I love how her hair blew as the fan turned towards her and then fell as it turned away... just beautiful; there's something about the 2D animation that is distinctly different than if the same scene were 3D but I'm not sure what [later in the movie there's a scene where they're riding in a truck and there's outlines of sea creatures in the rain... I figure here that perhaps the simplicity of 2D, or rather the complexity of 3D can be distracting]
He didn't answer her question. Why didn't he send her to the nurse?
Hmm. Seems unfair but... I guess this type of thing happens in sports where as a player you have to remain coolheaded even when agitated - it's a skill all on its own
I was a little surprised to learn she has a dad since the movie seemed to be leaning towards her being an orphan
"Is summer break... a vacation in the summer?"
Huh. Would sound readily transmit through the water and glass like that?
Lol, what? His dad knows about this kid? I suppose more weird is that I guess there's no magic involved... he's just a kid!?!
How random, yet magical (Umi coming to get Ruka to see the Will-o'-the-wisp; even though Ruka figures Umi found her because she wanted to be found)
It is explained that sound travels farther in water than in air
It is very interesting how this is the second or so time the scene cuts back to her scraped knee
Oh, her reaction with Sora, at first I coudln't quite tell, but I believe it reminds me of the protagonist in Spirited Away.
("The water's so deep") Holy I'd be freaked out. I get a little freaked out even near the coastline at about seven or so feet deep (I'm a little over five feet tall)
Wow. That dinner looked amazing.
Talking about dark matter...
What they're talking about seems similar to what I believe or draw similarities scaling up... cells ~ animals ~ planet ~ solar system ~ universe
LOL. Meteorite!?! ("What did I just swallow?")
I was going to pause halfway into the film at around the 55 minute mark but here I am at the 67 minute mark...
"[...] those people who believe that humans are superior to everything else." This is one of my principal beliefs. Neither better or worse than any other species. And for that matter, with respect to the analogy, no better or worse than up or down.
"Wait, which world does Umi belong in?"
Oh right, didn't she get swallowed by a whale in the other scene?
Pausing around the 1 hour 25 minute mark.
1b: Resume. "I want to see." This is... strange. Certainly within the direction of the film, but I think there was a missing step in connecting the dots leading up to this moment.
1b: "I see it. Am I the universe?"
1b: Uh... so first she took it away from him. And then she struggled to get it back because she realizes it belongs to him? What!?! Makes no sense.
1b: "No, actually they're the same." [...] "So, outer space and humanity are similar." [...] "If we went into outer space, it would look just like the ocean." Yes! This is exactly one of my principal beliefs. I guess the entire movie revolves around trying to portray this single concept in animated form. On the one hand, I would say something was missing from it all. On the other hand, such a concept is quite an endeavor to try and convey... In fact, it's so difficult that the story is written as to explicitly sprinkle explanation dialogue explaining it throughout the story [After completing the movie, one of the snippets on Wikipedia is the following: "An animated adventure perhaps best appreciated as a visual experience, Children of the Sea is strikingly lovely if less than satisfying on a narrative level." ("Critics Consensus" on Rotten Tomatoes) Yes! That eloquently captures how I feel about the film. Though again with some understanding that the core concept the movie wanted to convey is not one easily conveyed, and the attempt is, in my own eye, worthy of applause.]
1b: Hmm... ("I want to be with you... forever.") I guess... is Ruka supposed to simply witness the event in order to preserve something like this happening again? In the same way that the old woman perhaps knows about the event? Though it seems many other persons in the film know about the event as well, but some wanted to study and perhaps manipulate it
1b: Ah, okay so my hunch was right: "I think I was just about your age when I also met a beautiful boy who came from the sea."
1b: I suppose this scene between the old woman and Ruka provides the missing link I was referring to in a satifactory way.
1b: Decent ending. [Apparently Umi is "sea" and Sora is "sky," so that her seeing herself as "Sea" and the other girl as "Sky" is supposed to be a realization by Ruka that there's a possibility for friendship]
Credits: A flower eventually appears on the chair at the end of the credits
A baby is crying.
Ruka cuts the umbilical cord.
Huh. Is Ruka's question somehow imply that perhaps the old woman is somehow her grandmother. Too curious that Ruka decides to just accept the answer. I suppose thematically the old woman explained that the universe speaks to everyone and passes on the same message. In particular this song.
Okay, so I guess it's more the latter, as Ruka says the following which I assume is supposed to be directly linked to the Q&A: "We're connected to a place deep inside us, all the time. And the most important promises we make... aren't made with words."

Jim Gaffigan: King Baby (2009)

20230810 Comment:
The other day Netflix listed Jim Gaffigan's specials as having a "Last day to watch" on August 9th, 2023, but now they show as having a last day of August 10th. Meanwhile, an associated website says the specials are leaving on August 12th (so the "Last day to watch" would be August 11th).

Jim Gaffigan: Beyond the Pale (2006)

20230802:
I watched the first 20 or so minutes of this special. It's leaving on August 11th or so. Jim Gaffigan makes extensive use of an interesting bit where he goes from him speaking to pretending like he's an audience member making comments.* Sometimes it just keeps the flow but sometimes it's hilarious.

While trying to recall a bit I found particularly funny, I liked when he was talking about the Food Network. He said watching the Food Network is okay when you're full, but like porn when you're hungry. He has a follow-up punchline regarding his pants being off. Good stuff.

*20230905: Apparently he does this from time to time in his other specials, but he did it much more during this special

1b: I started the special back at the 20 minute mark
1b: omg that's a good culmination for fruitcake: baker wiping off the counter. and that's the thing about most of Gaffigan's jokes thus far. just pure observational type humor. more clean.
1b: I found it surprising the amount of applause he got for his salad joke (magic salad); am I missing something?
1b: lol after his eating box of kudos joke they cut to a guy laughing so hard he looked over at his friend(s)
