Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)

Overview: An origin story for superhero Shang-Chi.
20211214 Comment:
For the most part, I really enjoyed this film. It had all the great elements of a Marvel movie (balanced mix of action and humor) while incorporating elements of (Asian) martial arts movies. My primary complaint with the film comes in the ending battle sequence. That fight is made bigger by involving two large creatures and it really detracts from the primary conflict and display of martial arts between the protagonist Shang-Chi and his father.

Xu Shang-Chi / Shaun (Simu Liu)

Alternatively, keep the big creatures, but add clarity to the battle and in a way that gives more agency to the protagonist. As an analogy, in Power Rangers, the rangers summon their Zords to fight on a larger scale, but their still in the driver seat. In this movie, Shang-Chi is momentarily incapable of resolving the universe-is-threatened situation in any way - despite successfully overcoming the conflict with his father.
Instant Comments:
1: Hehe valet.
1: Smile the story interruption

Xu Wenwu (Tony Leung) and Ying Li (Fala Chen)

1: Hehe she points out a poor name change for going into hiding
1: Hehe Wong. unexpected place for him
1: What a save. His sister caught his friend
1: Hmm doesn't really pass the reasonable test, something seems fishy about their mom wanting to be saved.
1: Hmm dragon eyes... clues... but still suspicious
1: Lol the fake terrorist from Iron Man 3. I have a very faint memory of it

Xu Xialing (Men'er Zhang)

1: Hahahaha Morris.
1: Haha 19% instead of 90
1: Hahaha haha if they could train monkeys...
1: Good driving by Katy... I guess the beginning of the movie clearly established she knows how.
1: Hehe a little character development for Katy (arrows, shoot at something)
1: As he fights his aunt, it seems like a tai chi, breath-based style.

1: after the flash back, it's likely he killed the man after all
1: Yes, he tells katy.
1: Why design a gate that opens in this way even if it requies a path.
1: Wait what are the physics of landing with the ring shot. The rings seem to act like projectiles. If I were falling from the sky, I couldn't just use a shotgun to land [resolved, see comment later]

Ying Nan (Michelle Yeoh)

1: I'm surprised an event like this wouldnt be on Dr. Strange's radar.
1: Oh as they're fighting and the rings turn red for Shang, it seems as if sometimes the rings are connected. So it'd be like shooting an air cannon to land.
1: To be honest that fight was hard to follow. It reminded me of Transformers: shots which are too close to the action especially relative to the scale of the participants [very different from Jackie Chan's filming principles related to enabling the viewer to see full movement]

The village of Ta Lo line up for battle.

1: Did they know they have a dragon in their lake? Haha [it was perhaps referenced earlier on, but detracts from the ending]
1: Lol they just tell their friends the story without holding back any details
1: Okay, so finally at the end Wong shows up for them. So my suspicion about Dr. Strange wasn't out of the question [where is Dr. Strange?] I guess going back to Wong in the fighting ring, I suppose that's a good place to dig up info and stay connected with shiftier things. In addition to making some money in a WWF style setting, haha.
1: Hahahaha karaoke. Plus Wong.

Katy (Awkwafina)

1: Oh, in many movies, or maybe it's a new general Disney plus change. Credits would shrink. But today they stay up and theres an option to shrink credits [it seems that any movie with special parts in the credits will not shrink]

The Good Dinosaur (2015)

20211214 Comment:
A visually beautiful movie, but terrible plot. More specifically, the movie sets up a situation where the protagonist Arlo is exposed to a traumatic event, but does not continuously show how that event affects him. It's not until late in the movie that Arlo faces the trauma, overcomes it, and proceeds to save his new friend. But then, for some odd reason, the writers decided to throw Arlo into a similar situation as that of the traumatic event. The new situation has no impact on Arlo's character growth, and only serves to be an exciting rescue sequence - one that could have taken place elsewhere.

Arlo (left) and his dad (right)

Another point in which the movie failed is that it spent so much time focusing on contribution on the farm and the mark, only to leave the resolution of these plot points unresolved - at least explicitly. They're practically MacGuffins.

Leaving on a good note, I recall an opening scene with water that looked so real it was unbelievable. Many other scenes in the movie are equally beautiful if one just paused and looked at the background.
Instant Comments:
1a: I put notes for first half on a piece of paper
1b: Continue. Around 39 min mark.
1b: Haha when he successfully blows a bunch of the rodents.
1b: I didn't get that scene, but rewatched it. I guess they were eating old rotten, likely molded peaches so they hallucinated

Symbols... of bad parenting?

1b: Wow that communication of family... I didnt see that coming. I was about to comment that the theme of family is core to Lilo and Stitch, and my first instinct was that this movie was somehow derivative of that movie; however, this scene sufficiently differentiates The Good Dinosaur [with that being said, The Good Dinosaur is a Pixar film, not a Disney film]
1b: Thunderclap sounds a bit like Owen Wilson [the character is voiced by Steve Zahn]
1b: Hehe Spot is like an actual dog.
1b: Hehe these t-rexs (?) are like cowboys riding horses. I guess they don't eat Arlo because they technically have plenty of food
1b: Silly to ask what if they have claws and big teeth

Arlo and Spot

1b: HA! Can I touch it this time?
1b: Like sharks but upside down
1b: weird with Spot seeing another human and Arlo stopping it. Was he just being selfish?
1b: I guess if Arlo survives (undoubtedly he would), it begs the question how did his dad not survive.
1b: Hmm it seems implied these other creatures are not Spot's real family cause different hair. They also seem to spend time standing instead of being on all fours
1b: Hmm I guess great that he got home but he didn't contribute to his family farming and got a mark for... coming home? Surely he saved that boy but it was not conveyed in any way. I'd say a lackluster ending.

Ratatouille (2007)

20110115 Comment:
Wonderful Disney-Pixar movie.

It was funny. It was charming. The entire movie just flowed well for me.

I recall, however, that I didn't remember any of the character names some time after watching the movie; not even the name of the main character, Remy. (I was at Disneyland and there were two rats, and I said something like, "Those are the characters from Ratatouille! Er... What are their names?" Answer: Remy and Emile.)

Instant Comments:
1a: Wow... they were all in the ceiling...
1a: "You remember Renata, Gusteau's old flame?"

1a: Didn't open the letter...
1a: Hahaha when he opens his shirt and screams
1a: Haha. "That's strangely involuntary"
1b: Continuing ratatouille. Linguini is told to cleanup
1b: Huh he says I love you and changes it to your.

1b: Hehe they kiss... I'm surprised Colette likes it. She seems older by 10 years. Which I suppose is not too bad.
1b: Hahaha rodent hair. I thought that would happen, but good thing there was also human hair.
1b: Oh I was wondering, because I couldn't remember: how and who would find out about the letter.
1b: Wow that's quite a chase scene between a chef and a rat.
1b: A more simple chain of events (compared to recently watching Pocahontas). Linguini started it. Well, I suppose slightly complex in that there was Remy who built up the problem.

Toy Story (1995)

Overview: Andy gets a new toy for his birthday, a Buzz Lightyear action figure. The toy becomes his new favorite and his previous favorite, Woody, becomes jealous.

Instant Comments: 1a: You uncultured swine [it's funny because Hamm is a pig].
1a: Lol. Mr potato uses his lips to kiss his ass.
1a: I just realized kind of the silliness of army men. They can move all their upper plastic but somehow their feet are bound to the hard plastic

1a: Also kind of hard to believe there's never been a situation where they've been spotted
1a: Wait the gas station is dinoco. Isnt that the car company in cars.
1a: I forgot how buzz realized he was a toy. Apparently this commercial
1a: Paused after sid sets alarm clock

WandaVision

Overview: A show featuring Wanda and Vision that takes place after Endgame.
Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) (episode 1)

S1E1
Hmm very plain episode. Only some hints of weirdness. Would probably be strange to a non-Marvel fan (also to those unfamiliar with early American sitcoms).
1=20211118

(episode 2)

S1E2
Hahahaha. Wanda reveals mirrors and Bev (correctly) asks is that how mirrors work?
Weird ending.... so she rewinds but why would the thump not just repeat.
And the radio question repeated.
1=20211118

(episode 3)

S1E3
1b: Start before Geraldine comes over.
1b: The laugh track placed randomly.
1b: It looks like she has a second...
1b: "He was killed Ultron wasn't he"
1b: "She came here because were all..."
1b: At around 25 min the screen widens

Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) (episode 4)

S1E4
Looks like people reappearing after the blip but the confusion seems weird.
Okay yeah, 3 years and 2 years.
What is SWORD?
Hehe. Woo FBI from Ant-Man
The people from Eastview don't acknowledge Westview hehe
The color helicoptor
Not sure i understand the captain's questions regarding awareness

Agnes (Kathryn Hahn) (episode 5)

Darcy Lewis from Thor series
Hehe "I need a tv like an old one like not flat" I guess she was the one watching in the credits of one of the episodes.
Why did Darcy drop the noodles?
"Why did you colorize it?" "I didn't"
Hehe the radio
Ah and now the beekeeper.

(episode 5)

S1E5
Now it takes up the whole screen (no horizontal black bars)
"Should we take it from the top?"
Haha dark liquor for the babies
What intro is this supposed to be most like, different strokes? [Family ties]
The end of the intro could be a mention to Full House where they're eating outside
"We can't reverse death"
That's quite a twist. Pietro. [Oh, from ep 6 recap, the "recast" comment is because it's the X-men Pietro instead of the MCU pietro; good because I like the xmen one better]

Vision, Pietro (Evan Peters), and Wanda (episode 6)

S1E6
Are these the golden age uniforms or something?

Peter Pan (1953)

Overview: Wendy and her two brothers fly off to Never Land with Peter Pan and Tinker Bell for an adventure (and a lesson in growing up).

Instant Comments:
Negative depictions warning.
Hehe threatened that it would be her last night in the nursery
Haha I remember that. Poor Nana.

Hehe. "I think I'll give you a kiss." "What's a kiss?"
I used to think Michael says "he flew," but he actually says "he flewed"
Aboriginies - a person, animal, or plant that has been in a country or region from earliest times.
"Quite savage you know"

Yes the warning at the beginning regarding insensitivity is very true
Ben recognized the sight of the mermaids (likely from The Little Mermaid) and he said "look at the mermaids"
Why would the mermaids be specifically jealous of Wendy any more than they should be of each other?
Wendy takes the pipe away from Michael but allows John to smoke it
Hook takes advantage of Tink's jealously to find Peter

Peter Pan is such an asshole.
I guess Tinkerbell used her magic to shield Peter Pan.
They should cut the ladder
Mr. Darling says "you know I never mean those things."

Mr. Darling says he recognizes that ship from when he was younger... is that like an imagination thing? As in, metaphorically Peter Pan is about one's youth?

Arcane: League of Legends

20211111:
Thus far the story is good. The theme is slightly dark, but consumable. The show has small references for those familiar with the lore, but nothing distracting and none of it is needed to enjoy the story. For example, one of the kids says Powder always jinxes the missions (and those familiar with the game know that Powder is Jinx). We also get to meet a young Ekko.

20211112:
Today I watched the second and third episodes by myself (I watched the first episode with Ada).

In the second episode Jayce is main focus. We also prominently see Heimerdinger and Viktor. Caitlin shows up a little as well as Singe.

[20211212]
20241114:
Upon finishing the first act today, I couldn't help but feel confused by the story. So much so, I really don't remember why the end of the first season resulted in so much anticipation for more. Sure the visuals look amazing, but I think that has to go on top of a great story to be a great show.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcane_(TV_series)
Episode 1:
1=20211111

Episode 2:
Interesting, Vi decides to give herself up.
1=20211112

Episode 3:
Even though I know Vi would be "good"/Piltover and Jinx would be "bad," I never imagined the back story being so dark. Powder really just wanted to help and it was just misfortune that her attempt at helping did more harm to her friends than enemies. Perhaps her positioning could have been better... Furthermore, she was shown to be going crazy for being left alone, which is a direct result of Vi's decision.
1=20211112

Episode 4:
Interesting. I didn't see that coming (that he would not reveal anything).
Nice. "Who assaulted him?" (transition) "Who the hell are you?"
1=20211218

Episode 5:
Young Caitlyn shows she's quite the shot with a rifle (obviously in-game she is, but nothing in the show has set this up)
Oh. Caitlyn likes women.
Meanwhile Jayce ends up with this women.
Imagine Dragons get a cameo!
Amazing that Vy packs a punch against this Sevika character with just her bare hands.
"You gonna help me out, cupcake?" "Stop calling me that. My name is Caitlyn." "But you're so sweet. Like a cupcake."
Is it really possible for Jinx to understand the hextech gem faster than Jayce or Viktor? Technically she's working with the refined gem, which they also seem to have working with some prototpes...
1=20211218

Episode 6:
"We lost her." "Lost who?"
Wow. Drops the block to prove a point. "Oops. So sorry. Accidents happen."
I don't recognize this person which is helping (?) Vi
The voting should be anonymous... Because seeing other people voting adds to peer pressure.
Oh no! betrayed!
Is she not going to answer the smoke signal?
Smile. "How manyh problems can one girl cause?"
"Pow-Pow" (the name of her mini-gun)
I didn't realize she had some sort of multipersonality disorder
1=20211218

Episode 7:
Are we finally going to get Ekko? (hip hop intro)
Nice reveal. Vy asks "You shy? Or just ugly?" "You were good for a dead girl."
"In the meantime, try not to lose your nuts."
Oh wow. Those firelights. Unexpected...
He dropped the watch.
That's quite a showdown between Ekko and Jinx (cool that apparently it mimics a similar showdown they had as kids)
1=20211218

Episode 8:
How did the gemstone end up with Jinx?
Caitlyn is also biracial.
I like how Heimerdinger just shakes the components to make the top
"What about us?"
Sky vanished, his arm gone, and the hexcore evolved?
Nice. Vi with the hextech glove.
Jayce with the hammer!
Oh no... Caitlyn unarmed against Jinx?
1=20211218

Episode 9:
Why would Piltover be against Zaun's independence?
Hahaha. "Sheesh, I'm not that crazy." (everyone expecting Caitlyn's head on a platter)
Interesting last words by Silco.
First use of Fishbones (unnamed in the episode) - powered by the gemstone
Pentakill? Hehe.
1-20211218

Recap:
Hmm. I don't remember most of this. Perhaps mainly just Jinx's storyline
1=20241113

Episode 1:
Wow. Intense opening with Viktor being rescued
Wow. This opening credits is so beautiful looking
Hmm... hard to parse some of this dialogue when I don't remember the happenings of season 1
Sounds like Graves but not sure who it is [at the end of the episode I looked him up, his name is Loris]
hmm. If Jayce is hurt here... I'm guessing Viktor will come out to save him
Caitlyn became an entirely different person
1=20241113

Episode 2:
Teemo?
Smile. "The brambleback has left the jungle."
Crazy Jinx. I think this scene was in a trailer.
Wow this fight scene paired with the music is great.
Hehe. Randomizer arm. This would be a cool character in League
I don't really remember this character's backstory. Did he get into drugs? Maybe Silco forced him into it? [the Arcane wiki article says he was addicted to Shimmer]
1=20241113

Episode 3:
1b: Resume at 7:30 mark
1b: He's taking Shimmer but with surface application?
1b: Hehe. "ball socket"
1b: Jinx references Janna
1b: smile. "wispy wind woman"
1b: Uh... well if this were in-game... not sure how a Jinx would take on a Vi in a 1v1 unless Jinx was absolutely fed
1b: And there you go... Vi just tears up her gun
1b: I feel like while thematically the sisters battling make sense. The more appropriate fight would be melee vs melee and ranged vs ranged
1b: This whole series of events is less a beautifully choreographed fight and a display of emotions and astract art... underwhelming for me but okay... sure
1b: Hmm... Vi must be going easy cause how do you not win a fight with megagloves vs barehands?
1b: Indeed that is who she would choose, but I don't know why; does Ambessa feel Caitlyn has the title to lead but perhaps not the experience and hence easily controlled?
1b: What else is going on here in the underground?
1b: hehe the soldiers join in confusedly
1b: Singed and Warwick?
1a=20241113, 1b=20241114

Episode 4:
Neat song. But I don't get it. Two opening credits or what?
Huh. When did she stop her feeling sfor Vi and start dating this person?
Hmm... I don't know what's different about this show... so political. Hehe. Her middle finger. When did she lose it?
Hehe. Warwick's blood scent passive [Blood Hunt]
Wow. It seemed scary (the person reached out to Jinx) and then it became such this surprisingly touching moment
Wait. What? What was Warwick that he remembers Powder?
1=20250219

Episode 5:
Wow. What a rollercoaster she went through
Family reunion
Holy moly. Just smashed to death?
1=20250219

Episode 6:
Hehe. "On the job I see." (Caitlyn has a quote. "On the job.")
"Don't sugar coat it, cupcake."
Well I feel like it's implied that Vi communicated the situation to Caitlyn and was to be intentionally captured but for what reason
They certainly put on quite a convincing show.
Ah. I guess with the bodyguard gone, it's just Vi vs Ambessa
When Vander comes out after post Viktor being destroyed. I wonder if WW has an Arcane skin [while there is a skin, it looks nothing like Vander or Arcane Warwick before or after the transformation...]
Wow. Double loading the gun and the goodbye finger gun
1=20250224

Episode 7:
Hehe. I was wondering in the last episode when we were going to see time traveling Ekko
Hehe. Was that Ambessa as a waitress? [No, the character's name is Gert and she was the first to touch Jinx on the shoulder]
Haha. Give or take.
"Precisely, or rather imprecisely."
Huh. His hammer is back to normal
Hehe. "The limit is 4 seconds." "Are you sure my boy. What were the indicators?" "Trust me it's four seconds." So the in-game rewind for Chronobreak is 4 seconds. But crazy how Heimer was going to explode.
1=20250224

Episode 8:
It's so confusing to keep track of who is good and bad. So many characters that staddle between the two (with Jayce and Viktor being two most confusing)
What passion
Jinx has a lot of the hextech in her drawer... is there meaning in that? would it have changed anything?
1=20250224

Episode 9:
In the previous episode, Jinx's long unbraided hair in the jail cell was great. And then the bleeding nail was also a great touch
Holy oly. Ambessa can just take shots from a sniper rifle like that?
Oh no. Lorus got taken out
I feel like such a key weapon needed better protection
oh no... their bobm didn't go off
No way... betrayed...
But no way Caitlyn dies.
Holy moly. What a way to go out. Richochet
Is Ambessa's duaghter gonna be added to the game? [Yes! She was released January 23, 2025. Note that Ambessa was released back in November 6, 2024]
Dang. Ambessa 2 v 1.
I guess Caitlyn should have to cut the anti magic things from Ambessa's arms and that will allow Mel to advance
Nice. Mission accomplished.
"For one without the gift, you've been a thorn."
What is she taking from Ambessa? Could she not have taken Ambessa solo?
Hmm. "I see your face deciver."
They show us a better look at Viktor's third arm or whatever...
Finally the arm fires the classic Viktor beam
Huh. How did he miss Ekko? [while watching "Arcane ENDING Explained" it is mentioned Ekko was missed because he was under rumble]
Rewind coming.
Oh no... 4 seconds not enough [oh. in "Arcane ENDING Explained" it is noted that he was just rewinding at 1 second intervals... but in that being stuck situation he goes way past the 4 second mark]
Kind of makes sense but doesn't... not sure. Especially not sure what the rune being given from Viktor to Jayce was about [watching an "Arcane ENDING Explained" and it says this goes back to Season 1, where a mysterious figure gives Jayce a rune, and so in this scene we're supposed to realize that that person was Viktor. The explanation goes on that the multiple runes and the way the scene plays out is that multiple attempts were made across different timelines.]
Huh. I thought he was gonna come to for a moment and launch Jinx back up
Huh. I can't imagine Jinx really died there...
Caitlyn investigating air ducts with Minx's moneky head in hand

The Fox and the Hound (1981)

20211107:
Overall the movie was less sad than I remembered it being. The story is also short, especially if removing the whole caterpillar side story.

Young Copper (Corey Feldman) and Young Tod (Keith Coogan)

Instant Comments:
Chief is the same dog voice in 101 Dalmations [Napolean, Pat Buttram]
This woodpecker is Tigger [Paul Winchell]
Young Tod: Copper, you're my best friend.
Young Copper: And you're mine too, Tod.
Young Tod: And we'll always be friends forever. Won't we?
Young Copper: Yeah, forever.

Chief (Pat Buttram), Amos Slade (Jack Albertson), and Widow Tweed (Jeanette Nolan)

Oh this is Piglet's voice, the porcupine [John Fiedler]
Oh Tod sounds like Wart from Sword in the Stone [but he's not, Wart is voiced by Rickie Sorensen].
Smile. "Six? Six what?"
Hmm the end is definitely not what I expected... I remembered the bear but I would have thought the hunter would have seen Tod rescue Copper... as it stands, Copper returned the favor for Tod and Amos backed off...
The ending was alright with Tod recalling their sentimental conversation (see blockquote above)

Cars 2 (2011)

20211104:
My wife and kid were watching Cars 3. I started watching around the 41 minute mark: McQueen asks Mater, "Why were you yelling things at me while I was racing?"
Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and Mater (Larry the Cable Guy)

20211109:
Watching the first half of the movie, especially the five minute leading up to the part I started watching, made the movie make much more sense. In particular, at the part I started watching, it seemed like Lightning McQueen was overreacting about something. But having watched the first half of the movie, Mater had it coming to him. Note, however, I would question why Mater didn't ever respond to McQueen. And I think McQueen would partially be to blame for not questioning what he perceived as a command.

Inside Job

20211103:
I watched the first episode of this series. At first the show started with a character who reminded me of Rick from Rick and Morty but it turned out the show was centered around his daughter Reagan. She works at a company called Cognito, Inc. It was a decent episode.
