Superman Returns (2006)

20110122 Comment:
I remember liking this movie a lot. I recall even putting it close to Batman Begins (2005). With that being said, I like Superman Returns less than Batman Begins and I like Batman Begins less than The Dark Knight (2008). Though when Iron Man (2008) came out, I feel like I enjoyed that more than Superman Returns; I'd place Iron Man right between Superman Returns and Batman Begins.*

Superman (Brandon Routh)

Critics on the other hand have differing opinions. This is reasonable, as I imagine the more movies one watches, a particular movie has to have substantially more substance to stand out from the rest.

In any case, the movie has left a positive impression on my mind, and one day I'll watch the movie again and see if my opinions of it have changed.

*Note: opinions are subject to change and may differ from one post to the next.

Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey)

20191024:
Watching this movie again today, I was not impressed. The movie somehow lacks qualities which make a superhero movie enjoyable. I would also say that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has really raised the bar on what constitutes a good superhero movie.

As of 20191020, Netflix determined the movie for me as a 98% match. I decided to give the movie neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down.

3a: Wow. These opening credits are a throwback.
3a: How does Superman jump so high without damaging anything?
3a: Hehe. Lex backs up.
3a: How does she bounce around the plane and live?

3a: "tragedy, sex, and Superman"
3a: I don't find this Lois Lane as appealing as other Lois Lane's; her personality seems too serious and she's not so attractive
3a: What a creeper.
3a: I feel like one of Superman's abilities would be to tell when people are lying via their heat signatures and more carefully reading their facial expressions.
3a: Hehe. Against his eye.
3a: Pause at 1 hour mark.
3b: "In the sky chief. No look it's..."

Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth), Richard White (James Marsden), and Jason White (Tristan Lake Leabu)

3b: "Chief, I've done Superman."
3b: Smile. They almost connected the likeness of Clark and Superman.
3b: Wait. Where does Superman keep his boots?
3b: Even though Clark was able to return before her, he couldn't have been settled in the amount of time it took Lois to return from the roof...
3b: Observes the mild effect of Kryptonite on the boy. "Who is that boy's father?"
3b: Probably the password is "Superman"
3b: It might be new land, but I don't see how Luthor could lay claim on it.

Clark Kent (Brandon Routh)

3b: I don't understand how the land growth occurs. Does it only occur from some source? Why doesn't more land grow from the pieces that break off?

Bright (2017)

20191019:
For the most part I liked the movie. However, I think there were some primary weaknesses.

Daryl Ward (Will Smith)

First, the movie might have overdid the topic of racism. Throughout the film, Officer Ward (Will Smith) belittles his orc partner Officer Jakoby (Joel Edgerton). Sure, I get it: African-Americans (the most likely real-life counterpart to orcs in the movie) are constantly being treated in a similar manner by white people (the most likely real-life counterpart to humans in the movie). But I get it because I'm aware of it and for those aware of it, keeping the same dialogue and tone throughout the entire movie is annoying. I didn't choose to watch this movie for a lesson about racial problems in America.* That's what documentaries like 13th are for. Furthermore, I think works of fiction with subtle messages have more impact and carry more artistic merit than works that just place their themes right on the surface.

Second, while the movie often had good exposition and methods of story-telling, it also didn't develop the characters enough - by which I mean any character other than Ward and Jakoby. Alternatively, I think at minimum the movie could have spent a little more time concerning the film's two major groups: Shield of Light and the Inferni.

Nick Jakoby (Joel Edgerton)

Third, the film more or less wraps up the main story, but doesn't wrap up enough loose ends and feels incomplete. It feels like it needs a sequel (Netflix ordered a sequel in December 2017). With that being said, I feel as if the story could have easily lent itself to a 10-episode mini-series, or even two seasons with 10 episodes each. The first season would more or less be the equivalent to this movie while the second season would deal with continued effort to stop the return of the Dark Lord.

With all that being said, the majority of action in the film felt realistic. It felt like it all could have happened.

In the end, I don't think this movie is worth recommending unless it has a sequel which develops the story in a compelling way.

Leilah (Noomi Rapace)

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 98% match. I decided to give the movie neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down.

*This is phrased on the Wikipedia as follows: "Bright received criticism for its [...] excessive focus on social commentary."

Instant Comments:
Joe Rogan
"Fairy lives don't matter today."

Ward and Jakoby

The trailer jumbles various dialogue around.
Huh. (The guy they apprehended spoke Orkish to Jakoby)
"You talk about my family again... I'll split your fucking head open."
Shield of Light.
Good method of exposition. In any case, that's pretty crazy. The only way to know if you're a Bright is if you hold a wand and don't explode.
The fact that Jakoby has a heightened sense of smell... I feel like that should be a reason to have more orcs on the force.

Serafin (Alex Meraz), Leilah, and Tien (Veronica Ngo)

I had to rewatch this scene. Apparently their pressuring him to agree to stealing the wand.
Maybe he recorded it all on the recorder he was given.
Intense scene with him turning around and shooting all four cops.
In the scene after the one elf spots someone in the window, there's a view of the city. In the air is a dragon.
I don't understand why this elf is so out of it. Why doesn't she behave like a regular person.
Poison asks for the wand in the bar. I say just throw it to him like a grenade.

Jakoby, Ward's daughter Sophia (Scarlet Spencer), and Ward

Holy crap, Tikka's leap.
Ugh. They killed everybody in that bar so quickly but have trouble killing Ward.
Oh. I didn't get it at first. Fiona. (reference to Shrek)
"I am a great orc."
I think the father shooting Jakoby after the son said Jakoby saved his life is a dick move.
Hehe. "... Illuminati shit." "Their Inferni. They destroyed the Illumanti..."

Inferni (Left to Right): Tien, Leilah, Tikka (Lucy Fry), Serafin, and Larika (Nadia Gray)

Hahaha. "Swipe left."

Ocean's Thirteen (2007)

20191018:
I finally watched the last movie in this trilogy. Although it's not as good as the first movie, Ocean's Eleven, I think it may be better than the second, Ocean's Twelve. The reason being I thought the plot was easier to follow while still having a couple of surprises for me, the viewer.

Danny Ocean (George Clooney)

As a whole, I don't know who I would recommend the trilogy too. In other words, my satisfaction with the Ocean's trilogy roughly mirrors my satisfaction with The Matrix trilogy.

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 98% match. I decided to give the movie neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down.

Instant Comments:
Haha. He just leaves.

Rusty Ryan (Brad Pitt)

"Where are Tess and Isabel?" "It's not their fight!" (repeating what he said to Rusty in the previous scene)
Wow. That sucks. (they show us the flashback between Banks and Reuben)
Smile. Machine says your clean.
I don't completely understand why the Greco ruins their plans. [I guess a lot of people will win at the same time and the Greco would detect that which would raise suspicion.]
Hahaha. Dealt himself a blackjack.

Linus Caldwell (right, Matt Damon) and Reuben Tishkoff (left, Elliott Gould)

Smile. And again.
Haha. Made to look like it would be Linus.
The nose.
The thickness is 7" which is too thick.
Hahaha. "Are they really building her a new home?" "For the whole family." Rusty sniffles.

Saul Bloom (Carl Reiner)

Ha. The factory. He made it worse.
Hahahaha. $36K total.
Hahahahaha. The nose gets in the way of the champagne glass.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

20180314:
Today I watched the first episode of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood together with Ada. It started much differently than Fullmetal Alchemist.

As of 20180315, Netflix determined the movie for me as a 98% match.

20191012:
Today I decided to start this series. Although I have previously watched the first episode, I went ahead and watched it again.

20191013:
Today I watched episodes 7 through 10. Ada joined me in watching episodes 9 and 10.

20191014:
Ada and I continue to watch the series.

20191024 Comment:
Since Ada joined me at Part 1 Episode 9, I only ever continue watching the series together with her. Also, I haven't been indicating it, but I usually watch with English subtitles (which I presume are the original subtitles for the Japanese audio, because they don't match the English audio).

20191116:
Ada expresses interest in finishing the series, but despite the story coming close to an end with respect to time, there's a lot of story that needs to unfold. In fact, we still need to watch about ten more episodes until we get to the end.

20191120:
The penultimate episode was quite a finish.

Part 1 Episode 1.
They overdo the joke on mixing up Edward and Alphonse (i.e., thinking Al is the Fullmetal Alchemist and that he's the older brother because he's taller).
It is shown that Armstrong already knows the Elric brothers (and earlier it is shown that Maes Hughes just met them).
Lust and Gluttony.

"You shouldn't cry for love ones when they pass away, because when you do it makes them sad in the next life too."

Part 1 Episode 3.
There are many similarities between this episode and the corresponding episode in Fullmetal Alchemist. So much so that I get confused on whether or not I've already seen this episode or if I'm watching the right series. With that being said, Cornello was drawn differently.

Agitates her and then tells her to calm down.
And now we hear that there was a direct witness on the round but it's being rejected.
I think Mustang didn't really kill Ross.
That's convoluted and nonsensical. Forces Maria Ross to go to jail under fail pretenses and then also suspects Roy Mustang of breaking Ross out so that Mustang can kill her.

Part 2 Episode 7. [Episode 20]
Why can't he just use alchemy to spread the dirt? (Or in an earlier episode he wrung his shirt dry. Couldn't he just use alchemy to dry it?)
"That's weird, have his shoulders always been that broad?" (Ada thinks of the interpretation literally, like if he's growing; I suggest it's either his confidence growing or that Winry is starting to like him - because when one person likes another person, he/she will begin to see the other person's characteristics positively)
1=20191015 ~23:00

Part 2 Episode 8. [Episode 21]
"I wonder if his body is resting for mine too."
Ada mentions Alchestry as a possible solution for Havoc.

Part 4 Episode 1. [Episode 40]
From Ada's point of view, that is, based on what she's gathered from the story, Father is the first Homunculus and so he must be Pride (in a previous episode, it's mentioned that Pride is the first homunculus). This didn't make sense to me, but I didn't know why; in particular, I figured Father is just Father, creator of the various Homunculi. [Apparently in that same episode, episode 37, it is revealed that Selim is Pride. Speaking of which, that's all the sins: Lust, Gluttony, and Envy. Greed. King Bradley (Wrath). Recently Sloth (Episode 34). And finally Selim Bradley (Pride).]
Great episode. Full of backstory. However, I'm confused how in one scene Hohenheim is shown to have heard about the people killed in Xerxes and shows surprise by it. How could the one inside the flask be able to communicate with the Emperor one-on-one. Wouldn't Hohenheim's master have been involved?

Hmm, Pride partially answers that.
Hmm, Al is used to the darkness, so many nights he stayed awake.

Part 4 Episode 12. [Episode 51]
When General Armstrong is caught by Sloth, it was an easy predict on who would come to save her: her brother.
1=20191117

Part 5 Episode 2. [Episode 54]
I suspected the real Lt. Hawkeye but I also thought it was the real Roy Mustang so that was a good twist.
I'm surprised Envy would go out dying that way.
Alex Armstrong is quite strong to be holding strong against Sloth.
1=20191118

Part 5 Episode 3. [Episode 55]
Ada made a guess that the Fuhrer was in the chair. [He wasn't, but it was a reasonable guess.]
Who passed by the jeep as Al and Heinkel were lifting the jeep?
We wonder who might be able to go up against Bradley. I figure perhaps Izumi might.

I don't remember when or if it was explained why Bradley doesn't regenerate. I figure it's related to him being the only Homunculus who ages. [apparently Wrath is a result of the wrathful souls which fought until there was only one (within the Philosopher's Stone) and so Wrath does not have immortality or regenerative abilities]

Dave Chappelle: Sticks & Stones (2019)

20191008:
Today was my first time watching one of Dave Chappelle's comedy specials. From the style of the special, I got the feeling he was probably doing something different with it. In particular, he seemed to be using it as a platform to get various opinions across to the audience and eventual viewers. Personally, I don't mind this style, because sometimes comedy is purely for entertainment and sometimes comedy can be used as a powerful tool to make a point. Compared to other comedy specials I've seen, this one definitely hits or exceeds the average and so I'd recommend it to viewers who enjoy comedy specials - particularly those that address politically correct topics (e.g., Bill Burr's specials).

Netflix determined the special for me as a 98% match. I decided to give the special a thumbs up.

Con Air (1997)

20110110 Comment:
Great scene: Steve Buscemi sings "I've got the whole world..."

Cameron Poe (right, Nicolas Cage) and 'Baby-O' (left, Mykelti Williamson)

Good action movie.

20191007:
I decided to watch this movie again today. While I enjoyed most of the movie, the ending was relatively far fetched. In fact, the destruction and chaos is perfect for an action movie, but seemed irrational for the good guys.

Instant Comments:

Why'd he say that? I thought he retrieved the picture. "My daughter's picture! Where'd you put my daughter's picture you shit-eatin' peckerhead?"

Diamond Dog (Ving Rhymes)

"It's amazing the shit you white trash know." "That's right."
Eyes cut out. Obviously used for reading a letter.
"Don't touch anything." Proceeds to open the box that says "Do not open."
Oh no. He's gonna find Poe's stuff (with his parole letter).
"Put the bunny back in the box."
"One girl. I drove through [...] wearing her head as a hat."
"What do you think I"m gonna do? I'm gonna save the fuckin' day."
Lol. Larkin is tactically smarter than the soldiers.

'Pinball' (Dave Chappelle)

"DON'T... TREAT... WOMEN... LIKE... THAT!"
His car.
The little girl.
Hmm. Poe being found out seemed like a silly mistake. He should have had the foresight to hide that along with his parole letter after the earlier incident.
"He's got the whole world... in his hand..."
Hmm. How many people got injured or died during Con Air's crash landing.
Why would they choose to escape in such an indiscreet way? (on a firetruck)

*On 20110110, I wrote "I've seen this at least one other time." However, as of 20191007, I can't recall how many times I may have seen it. In fact, I just know that I saw the movie before and I didn't even realize I first saw it in theaters.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)

Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford)

20080523:
I recall liking most of the movie, but not the ending and various parts related to the ending. I don't mean the very ending; I mean the ending of the climax, where the audience learns the answer to the mystery.

I knew enough about Indiana Jones to understand various references about Indy. I think I've seen all of the first one, Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) through, but my memory is fuzzy. I'm sure I've seen bits and parts of the other Indiana Jones movies as well, but don't recall watching any of the other ones in full. I plan to watch them all soon enough. Perhaps make it a marathon.

Possible Spoiler (highlight to read):
Karen Allen also played Marion in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett)

20110617:
I almost got around to checking out the first three Indy movies from the library. I'll either have to borrow my friend's copies or wait until I have access to the library again. In any case, my dad came home from work and my sister and I finished watching Enchanted (2007) so I put on Kingdom of the Crystal Skull for him. I was only partially paying attention to the movie, trying instead on completing blog posts.

The movies take place in 1936, 1935, 1938, and 1957 and were made in 1981, 1984, 1989, and 2008, respectively. As such, Harrison Ford's physical appearance is reasonably accounted for by the character's timeline. I make these two statements in response to a comment made during the warehouse action scene about how Ford being too old for such action.

I think I enjoy the entire ending much better than I did watching it the first time in theaters.

Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf)

I don't know about most people, but I liked Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It might not have had the same adventure and mood as the first movie, but there's quite a bit of fun and interesting grand-scale action sequences. If anything, it's existence has nostalgic purposes. Something new, and yet something old and familiar.

Overall, I can see how the movie isn't always exciting and doesn't make a great movie, but it's decent . On the plus side, perhaps this movie being decent will allow the fifth movie to be awesome. I'm a glass half-full sort of guy.

Favorite Scenes:
Sinking
Three times it drops
Mutt picks up the hat that rolls in

Indy realizes the situation he's in.

20191005:
I was transferring movie posts to my movie blog and came across this title. It also happened to be the last Indiana Jones movie which I have yet to rewatch. As such, I decided to rewatch it.

On 20191005, Netflix determined the movie for me as a 96% match. I decided to give the movie a thumbs up.

Instant Comments:
3: I like how the lamps sway and the metal objects roll along the ground.
3: Ha. The swing back.
3: The ark at 15 or so minutes.

The moment the Indiana Jones series "nuked the fridge."

2: Sean Connery's picture at 27 minutes. 3: As well as Marcus.
2: Oh, my sister asked about why there were so many people with biker jackets on, I wasn't paying attention at the time, but on watching the scene with attention on 20110618, I realized there were basically two factions sitting in the cafe. There's also a bunch of bikes parked outside.
3: "El Dorado"
3: His hat!
3: I know it's an expression but having seen the movie before: "Get on gramps."
3: The status is of Marcus.
2: I like the little scene where the motorcycle crashes in the library and the student asks Dr. Jones a question 3: "If you want to be a good archaeologist, you gotta get out of the library!"
3: "You're a... teacher?" "Part time."

Indy is forced to look at the skull.

3: Huh. I wonder if reaching in and pulling the string is possibly a reference to the movie where the girl has to reach inside in order to save Indy and Inches.
3: Nice effect. The air aging the mummy.
3: In the background is a soldier dancing. He's doing this jump spin which I recently saw in one of the Just Dance tracks, "Bang Bang Bang (Alternate)."
3: Hahahaha. School.
3: Smile. The snake.
3: Why not slow down in order to avoid being pushed from the side.
3: Jones says "Siafu." (Dorylus (Wikipedia.org))
3: Snaps. Building a tower and then squashed in the knees.
3: His hat! [LOL]

Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen)

3: Lol caught on the tree. No way she planned that.
3: Smile. "Three times it drops."
3: Before I was wondering if they/it was still alive. At 1 hr 40 min, as they're entering through the door, I wonder enough to write this note down.
3: Hmm. It/they could be the equivalent of a computer.
3: I don't understand why Indy had to throw the whip to Max.
2: 1 hr 53 min, "Junior." [...] "Somewhere your grandpa is laughing."
3: HAHA. Indy takes the hat.

*I just read (20110618) the first few lines to the corresponding Wikipedia page and I feel they might reveal too much.

Hahahaha. This HISHE (How It Should Have Ended) doesn't quite suggest how the movie should have ended, rather pokes fun at the fact that it was made. I like how Shia LeBeouf is holding a script to Blade Runner 2.
