Moana (2016)

20170626:
Today my family and I started watching Moana but we were using a projector and the projector screen was in a room where the light filtered in and washed out the film's vibrant colors. With that being said, the scene with baby Moana was still absolutely cute! Unfortunately, the viewing conditions were bad and we decided to stop the movie short and postponed watching it at a different date and/or time.

Moana (Auli'i Cravalho)

20170628:
Due to suboptimal viewing conditions, we had previously postponed completion of Moana. With a strong desire to see the film, today my family and I went ahead and watched the film from start to finish.

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 99% match.* I decided to give the movie a thumbs up.

*Technically my sister picked to watch the movie, but I would have eventually watched it on my own anyways and this happened to be the Netflix rating.

Maui (Dwayne Johnson)

20170728:
I enjoyed the movie the first time and it was fun to watch it again. It's not a favorite, but I was certainly up for watching it again.

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 79% match. (I guess I never got around to giving the movie a thumbs up, but I did after I watched it today.)

Gramma Tala (Rachel House)

20170731:
Today I was on an airplane and after watching LEGO Batman I knew I wouldn't have enough time to watch another movie in full. Instead, I decided to only watch the main parts of Moana: essentially watching all the songs and fast forwarding through the dialogue. I took the following notes:
ff to baby Moana, so cute. | Moana grows old, her grandma grows old | I love her grandma's character | "That's good pork." | ff to "How Far I'll Go" | ff to "We Know the Way" + "How Far I'll Go (Reprise)" | ff to "You're Welcome" | ff to "Shiny" | Oh, I saw Sven! Though I only noticed him because I read about it | The crab's front right leg is broken. I thought it was completely missing but it actually has the first two sections. This is most obvious when he's on his back towards the end. | ff to fixing Tahiti, "Know Who You Are" | ff to credits

Tamatoa (Jemaine Clement)

As of 20171226, Netflix determined the movie for me as a 98% match. I gave the movie a thumbs up.

20240802 Comment:
Today I was going through my notes and adding old entries. I was surprised to see that the last time I saw Moana prior to the recent 20240607 viewing was in 2017.

On a different note, I was checking one of my comments and Disney+ weirdly doesn't support ultrawide monitors and so the video ends up showing black bars on all sides. As such, I learned one has to install a browser extension to eliminate a set of black bars (keeping equal aspect ratios, then this means the top and bottom bars). With uneven scaling of 2x along the horizontal and 1.7x along the vertical, I was able to fill my 32:9 screen. This clips the top and bottom without significantly distorting the view (I believe the native resolution is 2.40:1, and so such a scaling would result in a 2.82:1 aspect filling a 3.56:1 screen; in other words a 3:56:1.26 image on a 3.56:1 screen has roughly 20% = 0.26/1.26 vertically clipped.).
Instant Comments:
5: the story is told in a way that portrays (spoiler) a difference between Te Kā and Te Fiti, but it's hard to realize that this story was just being told by Gramma Tala
2: Cute baby scene.
2: Her gramma's part of the song and line.
2: She can't leave without the chicken...
5: hmm I felt I actually understood [today] how the lyrics of this song are relevant to the story (how far I'll go)
2: Beautiful sting ray coming from her gramma
-- watched up to her entering the cave
5: tearjerk. Moana's mom sees her leaving. (and then helps)
2: Wait, where's the pig?

Toddler Moana (Louise Bush)

A: It looked to me as if Maui didn't have nipples. [Various users (on the internet) have pointed out that he does have nipples: seen as dark circles under his tattoo. See also Moana's dad and toddler Moana]
5: tweeting
5: "Maui can do anything but float"
3: Maui's song actually alludes to what he's going to do before he does it.
2: The movie asks the questions that were in my mind, and perhaps other peoples: 1) why didn't the ocean just bring the heart back itself? 2) why didn't it bring him his hook?
2: "If you start singing I'm going to throw up."
5: the Kakamora jump onto the boat drums in sync with the music (or so it seems)
5: hahahaha "it's cold. it's getting warmer"
5: haha "I am still falling"
2: "I'm still falling."
5: Tamatoa's song says the fish are attracted to what glitters and the fish proceed to fall from the water. and Tamatoa says its free food.
5: was one of the transformations a reindeer? a reference to Frozen?
5: hahaha. I don't remember him talking with a sharkhead for so long
5: smile. shark tail. I didn't remember that happening
3: Oh, Maui hypothesizes why the Ocean picked Moana.
5: "Maui, thank you." "You're welcome"
5: Ah the ikorint[?] of Te Fiti [20240802: I assume I noticed that Te Kā had the symbol]
5: ah Moana recognized the pattern
5: "let her come to me" - Moana says to the Ocean
5: I love this song
5: I didn't remember he got a tattoo of her, and right next to his heart too

Credits:
A: Maui initiates the credits with a pull of his hook.
2: Credit version of "How Far I'll Go" was smoother, less jagged.
A: Huh. Wreck-it Ralph in the credits, near the end.
3: Tamatoa references Sebastian from The Little Mermaid. A: "If my name was Sebastian and I had a cool Jamaican accent, you'd totally help me!"
5: Tamatoa still upside down. he says if his name were Sebastian we'd have helped him
5: at the very very end there's some voice that says something

Million Dollar Baby (2004)

20170621:
I've seen this movie once before and it's been sitting in my Netflix My List for a while now. I suppose, without realizing, that I watch dramas less frequently than I watch action movies. Perhap because the former is more mentally exhausting than the latter.

Frankie Dunn (Clint Eastwood)

In any case, at just over two hours, Million Dollar Baby tells a story containing a wide variety of themes.

By the time I finished the movie, there was no doubt in my mind that I enjoyed watching it. I would highly recommend it.

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 90% match. I decided to give the movie a thumbs up.

Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank)

Instant Comments:
Damn. "You let him hit you."
Narrator sounds like Morgan Freeman, but perhaps with a slighter faster pace and deeper than I'm used to hearing
Ha. He's asking about the Trinity.

Eddie Scrap-Iron Dupris (Morgan Freeman) and Frankie

"There are no Demigods you fucking Pagan."
Oh, there's Morgan Freeman. He's using an in-character voice.
"I saw your last fight, Shawrelle. Spent so much time face down I thought the canvas had titties."
Wow. She's 31. Same age as me. Becoming a boxer is definitely ambitious. Such a story wouldn't be impossible, but ambitious nonetheless.

I remember this part where she wins all her first few matches with knockouts.
Oh wow. That's disheartening (her mom's comments regarding the house and general lack of support)
"One-hundred and ten. Get a job, punk."
Sciatic nerve.

Scrap and Danger Barch (Jay Baruchel)

Oh, I was wondering earlier which movie the sideways chair was in.

Ip Man 3 (2015)

20170621:
Instead of viewing Ip Man 3 as a movie telling a single story, after finishing the movie I thought it was better viewed as a combination of three separate stories.

Cheung Tin-chi (Jin Zhang as Max Zhang) and Ip Man (Donnie Yen)

Without going into details, this separation between the different parts of the movies made this movie less interesting than the Ip Man movies before it (Ip Man and Ip Man 2).

With that being said, there are two decent public (i.e., one-against-many) fights and two great individual (i.e., one-on-one) fights. There are also two or three smaller fights which move the story along.

Frank (Mike Tyson)

If you've seen the first and second movies, then by all means you should watch the third, even though it might not be as good as either. If you haven't seen either, then I would recommend you at least watch the first, because it really developed Ip Man and Wing Chun in a way that can't be seen in this movie.

Cheung Wing-sing (Lynn Hung) and Ip Man.

Netflix determined the movie for me as a <56%* match. I decided to give the movie neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down.

*With the first movie without a match percentage being 1st, Ip Man 3 was the 2nd out of 21 items with hidden match percentages.

Ma King-Sang (Patrick Tam)

Instant Comments:
I think that's Bruce Lee. Nose and water. [yes]
Lol, silly kid's fight.
Oh Cheung also uses Wing Chun.

Master Tin
Lol. She sewed it on
Ah unfortunate (Cheung's circumstance outweighed his morals)

Only halfway through movie...
Oh, I didn't realize before that his wife is taller than him
Close quarters to Ip Man's advantage. Though I guess his wife right there was to his disadvantage.

Ip Man and Fatso (Kent Cheng)

Lol. He beat this guy hands down. Well. I guess the guy was holding a little ground. But not equal footing.
Outmatched w.r.t. weight class?
Are the elbows really tougher than fits/knuckles?

Bleach the Movie: Hell Verse (2010)

20170618:
I've enjoyed reading the Bleach manga (~Volumes 1-21) and I enjoyed watching the Bleach anime, so it's finally time I watched the four Bleach movies. With the two available on Netflix, I randomly decided to watch this one, the fourth of the four Bleach movies.

Ichigo Kurosaki (JP: Masakazu Morita, EN: Johnny Yong Bosch)

While I enjoyed seeing Ichigo and his friends again (with - outside of Ichigo - Rukia, Renji, and Uryu getting major battle time), I was unsatisfied because the movie didn't fit into the Bleach timeline.

Renji Abarai (JP: Kentaro Ito, EN: Wally Wingert)

Consequently, if you're a fan of Bleach, but are like me and desire cohesion,* then I wouldn't extend a recommendation to watch the film. If you're a fan and could care less about cohesion, then this movie has a good enough story and a some good action sequences that would warrant a viewing.

Kokuto (JP: Kazuya Nakai, EN: Travis Willingham)

Finally, I would not recommend the movie to viewers unfamiliar with Bleach, because all of the character backstories (e.g., relationships among the characters and abilities) are assumed knowledge from the anime/manga. Although none of this is necessary to follow the film's story, lack of the knowledge will reduce the impact of each character's actions. With that being said, I would highly recommend the anime/manga itself!

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 85% match. I decided to give the movie neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down.

*I'm fine with remakes and/or alternatives of a character, e.g., whenever a superhero has his/her backstory changed upon a revamp or retelling of a series. But when a new story has implications of belonging to the same series and fails to fit, then I'd be irritated.

Uryu Ishida (JP: Noriaki Sugiyama, EN: Derek Stephen Prince)

Instant Comments:
Right after deciding to watch this movie, I wondered if the BLEACH movies are canon. [They are not. Especially this fourth one, which would technically take place after Hueco Mundo, but Ichigo lost his powers after Heuco Mundo.]
Ha. "Is it permanent or can you change back?"

Rukia Kuchiki (JP: Fumiko Orikasa, EN: Michelle Ruff)

The BFG (2016)

20170617:
This movie had a weird start, but it got better and became more magical towards the middle.

Unfortunately, while the movie possessed moments with beautiful visuals and imaginative wo to the likes of Pan's Labyrinth, Chronicles of Narnia, etc., the overall story was rough around the edges and the ending was anti-climatic.

In the end, I would relegate the movie to being potentially fun for kids to watch, and would be reserved about recommending it to adults.

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 97% match. I decided to give the movie neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down.

Instant Comments:
Fiesty. "I'll call the coppers! I will do it!"
Haha. Never this and that. Does them all anyways.

Lol. For someone so big, he sure is stealthy.
I wonder how fast he's going? What's the math on that? Assuming he's 20 times as tall and that allows him to be 20 times as fast. Assume he was running slower, and that a regular sized person running slower at a pace of 10 minutes per mile, or 6 miles per hour, then he was going 120 miles per hour. If he was only 10 times as tall, he'd still be going roughly 60 miles per hour.
Ha. "You asked me wrong." "You snatched me." "You asked me right."

Hehe. I like the way he talks.
Why are they afraid of water? Well. I suppose it makes sense to give them some sort of weakness.

Expelled from Paradise (2014)

Angela Balzac (JP: Rie Kugimiya, EN: Wendee Lee)

20170616:
About a third-way into the movie, I realized the film was also a western. I supposed, at this point, that it also belonged to the cyberpunk genre.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. It had great action and it covered a couple of philosophical topics which are fun to think about.

On a different note, I didn't have any complaints about the quality of the animation, because I don't watch that much anime and haven't formed a strong frame of reference within the genre.

Angela's second mecha.

Further reiterating a lack of familiarity with the genre, from an outsider's point of view, the movie had a fair amount of fan service (probably an understatement). With that being said, I would still commend the movie on it's action and story; though I suspect the story might be inspired by existing works and frequent viewers may be less satisfied.

Overall, I would definitely recommend the movie to viewers who enjoy action films, are open to animation films, and are unfamiliar with the anime genre. However, my recommendation becomes less certain without any one of those variables being satisfied.

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 81% match. I decided to give the movie a thumbs up.

Dingo (JP: Shinichiro Miki, EN: Steve Blum)

Instant Comments:
Haha. Higher resolution.
Awesome mecha.
Lol. "That explains the lolita vibe..." in reference to her using a younger body.
He certain reveals his usefulness.
Lol, their conversation in the car ride reminds me of Home.
Hehe. Her clothing makes her look out of place. I wonder why she wouldn't have been given a set of regular clothes. Don't get me wrong, she certainly looks hot in her outfit, but out of place nonetheless.*

Angela's uniform on DEVA.

Ha. "Is it because you feel sound down to your bones?"
That's a lot of cable.
34th Street/Penn Station. Does that mean they're in New York? [At least for the exchange, it seems that way]
Awesome. (The robot obtaining consciousness.)
I'm curious on the outcome now. Given that Frontier Setter's intent seems positive. After all, his interest seems to be in preserving the human race. But Angela still has her mission. Will her mind be swayed? And if so, what will occur in the remaining 50% of the film?

That's a huge gun.

Oh, I didn't think about it yet, when she got sent into a body, what exactly got sent? Is there only ever a single copy of her? [Angela later asks Zarik about Frontier Setter, and Zarik turns the conversation around and asks her about herself; he says he doesn't care to question it**][This is later addressed.]
Lol. Frontier Setter defines fascinating as using more computing power than yesterday.
Oh wow. Zarik gets to the core of how DEVA functions, or fails to function.
"I wouldn't live in paradise if I'd become a slave."
I suppose, to answer my wonder above, that the remainder of the film will go down as follows: Angela returns to DEVA, reports what she learned, but then realizes she has to leave back to Earth and will have to fight her way out to do it.

Dingo displays his marksmanship.

As she's talking to the higher ups, I'm curious if they can simply delete her or remove her high amounts of memory.
Hmm. I suppose what she did showed courage, but tactically foolish. She could have just lied and go back to her body. I suppose now it's up to Zarik and Frontier Setter to save her.
Her packet form is cute.
"Now I know how Adam and Eve felt when they were expelled from paradise."
That's quite an escape.
Holy shit. Frontier Setter's defenses are awesome.

She sounds physically stressed. Does it take physical strength to use the mecha? Is it more like an exoskeleton whose strength is proportional to the user? Though I doubt that's the case cause she's just holding onto steering handles. I suppose her hands would get tired.
I suppose the speeds of the mecha would be physically taxing. As well as any jolting within the mecha which occurs.

Credits:
In the middle of the credits is DEVA talking about stuff.
After the credits is Frontier Setter playing music.

Angela's first mecha.

*Well, this reminds me of when characters are in disguise relative to other in-world characters yet recognizable to the audience (e.g., Clark Kent/Superman, Jesse and James in Pokemon). Technically characters can be drawn to be truly in disguise, if desired, but that would potentially throw off the audience. Being recognizable to the audience becomes a convenience. In this case, Angela could be drawn with clothing to fit in, but under artistic license she can be drawn with anything as long as being in disguise isn't critical to the plot.
**This is similar to my thought on topics such as free will and/or what is real. While fun to discuss, I ultimately accept not needing to know; that is, I don't lose sleep over it.

Gremlins (1984)

20170612, 20170615:
It's possible I've seen the entire movie before as a kid, but I don't remember and it feels unlikely.

Gizmo (voiced by Howie Mandel)

While I enjoyed the look of the gremlins, their movements, and personalities, I was unimpressed with the story. In particular, it lacked character development and felt disjointed. For example, the story had some plot points with the protagonist's dog, but the dog's involvement in the movie seemed insubstantial. There was, however, an unexpected lesson to be learned at the end of the movie. On the one hand, this helped boost the shallow depth of the movie. On the other hand, it contributes to the disjointed story.

Mr. Wing (Keye Luke), Randall Peltzer (Hoyt Axton), Chinese Boy (John Louie)

In any case, I coincidentally watched the movie the day after Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, which was also a comedy horror. As such, my mind was prepared to watch and recognize another comedy horror. Like with Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, I didn't realize Gremlins was a comedy horror prior to watching it. However, I soon got the idea partway into the movie that it was a comedy horror, and soon enough to really enjoy the movie for its horror aspects.

Note that also like Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, Gremlins wasn't extremely scary; I was never on the edge of my seat. Though I can't speak for everyone, and there may be two or three scenes intended to throw the viewer up and out of his/her chair.

On the comedy side, Gremlins was mildly humorous. In fact, I can only recall (as of 20170616 6AM) only one comedic, over-the-top scene that, at the time, I was ambivalent about. to whether I found it funny or

Overall, Gremlins is something of a classic movie and I did enjoy bits and pieces of it, but

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 96% match.* I decided to give the movie neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down.

Lynn Peltzer (Frances Lee McCain) prepares to kill a gremlin.

*On 20170615 I was finishing the movie and the movie had shifted down to below the 56% match cutoff, 9th out of 49. My best guess is that ratings are wildly erratic based more on items recently watched than on ratings. [Today (20171119) the ratings had shifted back up to 90%.]
