The Lincoln Lawyer (2011)

20120803:
The flow of this movie was slow and jagged. The movie would have benefited from faster story telling. As such I was unsatisfied with the ending.

20230701 Remark: on 20170524 I indicated that I found these notes, proceeded to watch the movie to see if I had seen it before, and completed the movie without recalling having seen it before. However, I do no think that indicates with certainty that I haven't seen the movie before.
20170524:
Today I saw an old draft post which began "Watched 20120803 Netflix" and had the following three comments "The flow of this movie was slow and jagged. The movie would have benefited from faster story telling. As such I was unsatisfied with the ending." While the sentence structure more or less reflects my style of writing, I didn't have any recollection of the movie.

Mick Haller (Matthew McConaughey)

On the one hand, I've experienced numerous situations where I know I've seen a movie but remember absolutely nothing (several years later). On the other hand, I usually recall scenes and lines upon watching them again. In this, case however, I first looked at a trailer and didn't remember anything. Then I started watching the movie and it failed to ring a bell.

There was one line that was vaguely familiar, but other than that, I didn't recognize any others.

In any case, what started out as me trying to determine if I saw this movie, turned into me simply watching this movie. And, by the end, I was almost certain I hadn't seen it before.

Maggie McPherson (Marisa Tomei)

I'd be surprised if I had previously seen The Lincoln Lawyer and had made the above comments after seeing it. First, because it felt like I hadn't seen it yet. Second, because after today's viewing I thought the movie was appropriately paced. In particular, despite a small reveal in the middle of the plot, the movie keeps a healthy amount of tension and carries the movie to the ending just fine.

Overall, the movie's not great, but good enough to watch once.

Instant Comments:
The line I recognized: "I got my license back three months ago, Earl."

Louis Roulet (Ryan Phillippe)

"Are you sure there's not anything that you're not telling me?" When Louis Roulet replied ("Nothing.") That's when the story got interesting.
Oh damn. Different knife...
Given what we know at this point (Haller just slept with his ex-wife), I would guess Haller is being set up by Roulet because Haller defended the man who raped Roulet's mother (assuming Roulet wasn't lying about such an event taking place)
Holy. I didn't see that coming (mug shot) of Roulet
"You got one client in jail... for what your other client did. What'cha gonna do Mick?"

Frank Levin (William H. Macy)

The thing is. The gun used was Haller's gun, but he has an alibi, he was at his daughter's soccer game.
He said "nobody deserves that to happen." I'm not sure where the prosecutor was going with that. I suppose it means, of course crimes just happen to people. It shouldnt' happen to anybody.
Haha. "I still got your gun." "Then you're gonna have to explain how you got it."

20230701 Comment:
I was scrolling through my history of movies and came across this title. I didn't recognize what it would be about and to my surprise the previous entry also concerns an instance where I don't recall watching the movie. However, reading the entry today, I don't think it makes sense to reject the existing draft - since lack of recognition does not prove that I didn't watch the movie. As such, I'm going to add it as an entry.

Gantz: O (2016)

Masaru Kato (jp: Daisuke Ono / en: Kaiji Tang)

20170521:
This movie had great animation. In fact, my fiancee Ada wasn't quite paying attention at the start and she thought it was a 2D anime that had suddenly consisted of real live actors, but a second look revealed it was just 3D animation.

Reika (jp: Saori Hayami / en: Laura Post)

In any case, while the animation was visually stunning and the movie was filled with a decent amount of action, the movie failed to flesh out some of the details.

After the movie, I read that Gantz: O was based on the manga series Gantz, so perhaps it assumed its viewers would know some /all of the background. However, the movie saves a revealing moment for the end, but that moment is only a surprise to anyone who is unfamiliar with the series.

Nurarihyon (jp: Masane Tsukayama / en: Josiah Wills) and Kato

With that being said, I wish I knew it was part of a series prior to watching the movie, but I suppose it stood enough on it's own that it didn't matter. And as such, I would recommend the movie within that context: it's a visually great movie which attempts be self-explanatory, but might actually benefit from some prior knowledge of the manga.

Anzu Yamasaki (jp: M.A.O. / en: Cristina Vee)

As a side remark, I'll be sure to put Gantz on my list of manga to read.

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 91% match. I decided to give the movie neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down.

20171012:
The action in this movie was awesome.

Adam thought the same, specifically stating that the dialogue was at most average, but the action was well done.

Instant Comments:
2: Listening to English audio, they speak with Japanese accents
2: "Do I look too young."
1: Why didn't the boss die the first time he was pounded? [That is, after the giant body composed of human bodies was crushed]
2: Funny English dialogue coming from Oka.
2: Blood oozes from his suit after he takes a hit.

George Shimaki (jp: Masaki Sumitani / en: Steve Heiser)

1: Hmm. I think I understood the ending, but I'll have to watch that bit again. [Yeah, so the line is "You didn't tell Kato that he used to fight with us." The response was, "If I had, he'd fight to resurrect everyone who'd ever died in the game." She says, "You're right." Then he eventually says, "I never thought he'd be back!"

Walt Disney Animation Studios Short Films Collection (2015)

20170520:
Between Paperman and Feast, while Paperman required a magical element in its story, the plot was also more direct. In contrast, Feast threw an unexpected, but good turn in its story. Actually, it's so good it might deserve the top spot, but it's a tough choice. My intuition was that I like Paperman more, so I'll stick with that.

Paperman

I prefer both The Little Matchgirl and Lorenzo over Tick Tock Tale because I like the 2D animation more. But between The Little Matchgirl and Lorenzo, The Little Matchgirl had an appropriately dramatic ending and so I decided to rank it higher.

Consequently, my top 5, from most to least favorite, are Paperman, Feast, The Little Matchgirl, Lorenzo, and Tick Tock Tale.

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 82% match. I decided to give the collection neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down.

Instant Comments:
John Henry
Hmm. I never heard of John Henry before.

Lorenzo
Nice! I love how Disney brings inanimate objects to life.

Lorenzo

The Little Matchgirl
I'm glad this ended the way it did. I thought it would be unbelievable if it would have a completely happy ending (like if someone came to rescue her from her state)

Hot Fuzz (2007)

20170520:
My unfamiliarity with Simon Pegg and the title "Hot Fuzz" kept me from watching this comedy which was on My List. But Netflix rated the movie for me at 95% and as I attempted to clear out My List, or at least shorten it, I decided to give the movie a watch.

PC Danny Butterman (Nick Frost) and Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg)

The movie was humorous, and unlike some films, it didn't seem like they were trying too hard.

Overall, I was surprised, due to my own expectations, that the movie was enjoyable. While it's been a while since I've seen either Lethal Weapon (1987) or Bad Boys (1995), I feel it's better than Bad Boys and possibly just as good as Lethal Weapon.

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 95% match. I decided to give the movie a thumbs up.

Inspector Frank Butterman (Jim Broadbent)

20220630 Comment:
I came across this movie while adding movies to my watchlist. I didn't remember seeing it, but I had enough suspicion to check if I saw it before. And it turns out I did see it before.
Instant Comments:
I like how the movie sets up/details his exceptional skill.
Ha,"Does Bob look like the person who I would date? It's Dave." (they're both covered in white so they look the same)
"You do realize the windows broken from the inside."
Haha. "Hag." Great follow up to "Fascist"
Lol. The entire pub was filled with underage drinkers. [Oh, except for the one man.]

Simon Skinner (Timothy Dalton)

Huh. Yeah... interesting. If they found him exceptional (and annoying in the city), to have him here in the country should make quite a movie.
Asks about Die Hard 2 and Bad Boys II. "You ain't seen Bad Boys II?"
Supercop (Jackie Chan)
He used the term "collision"! He listens.
Point Break and Bad Boys II
Ah, nice. I remembered the ketchup packet.

Met Sergeant (Martin Freeman), Met Police Inspector (uncredited, Steve Coogan)

Lol. I was curious if he was just gonna kill him.
Dropkick!
Holy shit. He just took the whole stash (except the mine)
That was an amazing shootout.
I didn't realize the Met Sergeant was Martin Freeman until the end of the movie.

Cool Runnings (1993)

20170520:
I would have to say I had my doubts about Netflix's 97% match for Cool Runnings. On the one hand, it was part of My List. On the other hand, I've placed plenty of movies in My List which I've passed on.

Derice Bannock (Leon)

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 97% match. I decided to give the movie a thumbs up.

Instant Comments:
I was interested in the rules of obstruction and someone answered the following: "The impeded runner will probably ask for a re-race or for an automatic qualification and the committee will study the single case."

Yul Brenner (Malik Yoba), Junior Bevil (Rawle D. Lewis), and Sanka Coffie (Doug E. Doug)

He says the Olympics are in three months, but does that mean the Winter Olympics or Summer Olympics? And is that qualifications or what?
"The back is nice." (after the coach tells them how much responsibility the driver has)
They got it together! (Well of course seeing as this is a movie where we expect them to reach the Olympics)

Oh I see. They automatically qualify as representatives for their country.
Earlier I said, like obviously they would make it, yet I couldn't help but feel tense with their qualification run.
Him standing up to his father was a heartfelt moment.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)

20170516:
This film was humorous.

Peter Quill / Star-Lord (Chris Pratt)

The film emphasized and milked Groot in his young form: in particular, during the entire intro and throughout the credits.

Aside from Groot, the movie had a lot of cool special effects. Being picky, I found that some special effects, such as holding an energy ball or holding Groot, looked fake.

Gamora (Zoe Saldana)

Oh, they also might have gone overboard on Drax's laughing.

On a final note, I thought the first movie, Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), had a better story, but the second had better special effects and better peak moments.

Overall, I enjoyed the film. 6:53PM PT

Drax (Dave Bautista)

Trailers: Thor: Ragnorak (2017), The Hitman's Bodyguard (2017), Transformers: The Last Knight (2017), Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017), The Mummy (2017), Wonder Woman (2017), Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) 3:20PM PT

20171214:

2: "You're telling me. You wanna buy some batteries." "Hahahaha."
2: Haha. "You suck Zylak."
2: What was the purpose of Gamora holding onto Drax the whole way?
2: Ha. David Hasselhoff in Knight Rider.

Yondu (Michael Rooker)

2: Hehe. "Well hello boys." Takes a bite of the root. Spits it out. "It's not ripe."
2: Stan Lee's cameo occurs as Groot, Rocket, and Yondu are jumping through space. They interrupt him as he's speaking.
2: Groot vomits.
2: Haha. "Except maybe you."
2: "I'm Mary Poppins, y'all!"
2: "Get over it." - Nebula to Gamora.

Nebula (Karen Gillan)

2: In this movie, overall, I like Rocket, then Yondu, then Nebula. Continuing I would then pick Groot.
2: It's implied that Groot said "Welcome to the fucking Guardians of the Galaxy."

Credits:
2: Before the credits start, Kraglin tries using the arrow.
2: "Adam" Like Black Adam?
2: Teenager Groot.
2: "I am Groot" in the credits changes to a no animals or racoons were harmed message.

Baby Groot kicks off the opening credits.

2: David Hasselhoff. "Just remember, 'We are Groot.'"
2: The aliens abandon Stan Lee. [Apparently the "aliens" are Watchers. In fact, it's been acknowledge that Stan Lee's appearances in the different movies are because he's also a Watcher, specifically Uatu the Watcher.

The Secret Life of Pets (2016)

20170513:
The movie moved so fast and lacked a strong foundation. They could have at least improved on building the relationship between Max and Duke.

Max (Louis C.K.)

One plot detail I disliked was the inclusion of Duke's former owner. What happened to him? The ending is incomplete.

Overall, it wasn't a bad movie, but Netflix should reconsider their recommendation numbers.

Snowball (Kevin Hart)

Netflix determined the movie for me as a 99% match. I decided to give the movie neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down.

BoJack Horseman Season 6

[Part of TV Series: BoJack Horseman]

20210702: I didn't realize that I finished Season 5 and started watching episodes of Season 6. I realized around episode 5; I didn't write any notes.
S6:E05
"We would like not to be treated like garbage." "It appears we're at an impasse."
20210702

S6:E06
Ha. They're useless without their assistants. They don't even know how to get together.
Weekend at Bernies
Hahaha. "Or I'm not Todd Chavez."
20210702

S6:E07
"Oh shit, it walks now?"
The episodes kind of switch between up's and down's. This is one of those up episodes.
20210702

S6:E08
Huh. Why would Bojack want people to look up the name. But differently, I never thought that people would squeal at an AA meeting.
Oh wow. Everything is coming together... Wonder how it'll all play out.
20210702

S6:E09
Hahaha. "I'm just a 15-year old boy..." (raspy voice)
The character development on BoJack sort of finding a new self and having to deal with this new problem at the end of the episode is certainly expected. I feel like throughout the show I'm rooting for BoJack. Very curious how it'll play out.
20210702

S6:E10
Wow. Great complementary episode to the last episode.

S6:E11

S6:E12
Smile. "Why do you talk like that? We're from Fresno."
Oh... greedy BoJack.
Cute. Bubble wrap and a tin pan (Judah)
"Yeah, it's me." I guess they omitted that from the interview we saw being conducted for the effect of the ending... which... it's kind of like how moments in scary movies would be actually less scary from different angles.

Hmm. I was wondering if the water bottle was water or not. And I guess it turns out it wasn't (though for a moment he said it was just water and I believed it).
Diane's wearing a red and blue version of her jacket.
20210702

S6:E15
Wow. The credits with the flatline and then the heartbeat resuming.
20210703 12:18 AM

S6:E16
I suppose for the various ways to end a series, this was decent. Perhaps how I really feel is that it would have been great for the show to continue. Yet, the show doesn't really work with a happy BoJack. At the same time, the ending that's written seems to strike the balance of happiness for BoJack. I don't know. There's something about the ending that's off. Maybe it was underwhelming. Maybe I expected something to happen. Maybe the show had so much drama and it only touched on the primary relationships in this last episode.

On the wall. "wish I wasn't here Z.B. '17"

S4E08
Haha. He thought he was in a drama.
Smile. "Now I understand why so many people like being homeless."
Smile. Every single thing possibly targeted at pregnant women is thrown at her.

Well if her descendant is talking about her then something works out in the long run, right?
Oh that surprise ending.
Different song plays at the end.
