Jurassic Park (1993)

Overview:
In short, Jurassic Park is a park located on a Costa Rican island which contains cloned dinosaurs. The creator of the park, John Hammond, has invited a handful of people to tour the park (a paleontologist, a paleobotanist, a mathematician, and his two grandchildren), but thing's don't go as planned.

The star of the movie: T. Rex.

To make matters worst, one of his employees has deactivated the security system. Various dangers follow, including an escaped Tyrannosaurus and three Velociraptors.

20160718:
I still remember receiving this film on VHS as a birthday present when I was a kid. I didn't, however, really watch many movies growing up.

Grant (Sam Neill)

In fact, I didn't really watch many movies until I was an undergrad (primarily via Hollywood Video) and only truly began watching films in grad school (primarily via Netflix, but also a lot in theaters whenever I was visiting my friends in California).

In any case, the point is I remember the present, but only bits and parts of the movie.

Ellie (Laura Dern)

While I'm not a big fan of reading, I read and enjoyed a bit of the novel at one point.

Watching the film today, I found the movie held up pretty well over the past twenty-five years. There were, however, several moments throughout the film where the special effects were dated and/or noticeable.

Tim (Joseph Mazzello), Grant, and Lex (Ariana Richards)

With that being said, this movie retains a charm that surpasses the more recent and fourth film in the series, Jurassic World (2015). In the sense of charm and special effects, Jurassic Park is to Jurassic World as the original trilogy (Star Wars) is to the prequel trilogy (Star Wars).

One of the velociraptors...

On 20180715, Netflix determined the movie for me as a 98% match. I decided to give the movie a thumbs up.

Instant Comments:
As I watched him lift the gate, I couldn't help but wonder why there wasn't a smarter design
Is that duckface from full house? His face looks familiar...
Dr. Malcolm is a mathematician who specializes in chaos theory.
Ah, that music.

I absolutely don't remember any part prior to 18 minute mark; the first scene I sort of remember the gates; the first scene I definitely remember is the Brachiosaurus.
Having seen the other movies, I focused on the fact that they used the frog DNA to fill in the gaps (or perhaps it was vice versa)

Muldoon (Bob Peck)

"What species is this?" (He didn't know?) [20160722: I misinterpreted the scene, he knew the species, but essentially asked out of disbelief]
"What do they got in there, King Kong?"
Lol, Hammond's favorite words: "We spared no expense."
Lol. "Dinosaurs eat man. Women inherit the Earth."

Nedry (Wayne Knight)

"He's gonna eat the goat!?!"
I like the shaking water cups.
Awesome sequence of events (with T-Rex)
Huh. He throws the velociraptor claw away.
1 hr 30 min. The frog DNA is des

Arnold (Samuel L. Jackson)

"He can make it if we run." "No, we can't..." "Why not?" "We're being hunted."
The scene where they climb the electric fence is one of the best.
How could he be tricked so easily given he knew the velociraptor hunting behavior?
Lol. The kitchen scene is referenced in Bob's Burgers (Season 4, Episode 12).

Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) and Grant

"It's a UNIX system. I know this."

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (2008)

Guinevere Pettigrew (Frances McDormand)

20160714:
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day was a great movie. I missed a couple parts here and there but I'll definitely fill in the blanks at some point. It's such a well written story and from the way it started I definitely didn't think it was going to be a romance.

Overall, I found the film witty and enjoyed its pacing.

Delysia Lafosse (Amy Adams)

Among the various romantic comedies I've seen, it's one of the better ones (let's say 70th percentile or better) but not one of the best (so under the 80th percentile).

Considering I've probably only seen around 20-30 romantic comedies, that makes it anywhere from 13th to 5th (out of 20) or 19th to 7th (out of 30).

I'd further note, again among romantic comedies I've seen, the movie's tone is shifted a bit more towards romance than comedy.

In any case, I'd recommend the movie for its charm.

As a side note: my girlfriend had chose to watch the movie, but I later looked it up on my own Netflix and Netflix's rating of the movie for me was 4.5 (out of 5).

1: The first failed attempt to eat.

1: "I kind of am up as you can see."
1: "If I want to smoke cigars, I'll damned well smoke cigars, thank you very much, and to hell with your opinion."
1: Haha. "'Four's a Crowd''s a wonderful picture. Who were you?" "The crowd." [Everywhere I look I see the quote reading as "wonderful movie" but the audio for the Netflix movie is "wonderful picture" and the caption is in agreement]

1: Ha, totally forgot she was able to have some cucumbers (from her face mask)

The Big Short (2015)

20160711:
This biopic was educational and I loved it.

Michael Burry, M.D. (Christian Bale)

I would highly recommend it.

Instant Comments:
The tub scene to tell the plot.

Mark Baum (Steve Carell)

Ha. He just comes storming into the meeting.
His reintroduction to the viewers is pretty funny.
Not opportunity but money.

Jared Vennett (Ryan Gosling)

"That's very racist."
Love all the sides.
Anthony Bourdain explains CDOs.

Ben Rickert (Brad Pitt)

110 grand to 30 million.
"I don't get it, why are they confessing?" "They're not confessing..." "They're bragging."
Brad Pitt with so much facial hair, but can hear his voice.

Jamie Shipley (Finn Wittrock) and Charlie Geller (John Magaro)

Lol the polite way of saying "Fuck off!" is "Fuck off."
"Zero! There is a zero percent chance..."
+489%.

Cynthia Baum (Marisa Tomei)

[20170304] I noticed today while looking through screenshots that one of the Mortgage Brokers was Max Greenfield, the actor who plays Schmidt in the television series New Girl

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

Overview:
An alien (later named E.T.) is stranded on Earth when his companions are forced to flee without him. While on Earth, the alien meets and bonds with a young boy named Elliot.

E.T.

Together with his older brother Michael, his younger sister Gertie, and his brother's friends, Elliot sets out to help E.T. get home. But with the feds monitoring the town, it isn't going to be easy.

20160704:
As far as I can remember, I never watched E. T. as a kid and really only know it by popularity.

Elliot (Henry Thomas) and E.T. fly pass the moon.

In particular, I've seen references to the flying bike across the moon and I'm somehow familiar with E. T. pointing his finger to the sky and saying "E.T. phone home."*

Overall, this movie had moments that felt dated, but there was a lot of innovative design despite it's date as well (released in 1982).

Regardless, there were times where E. T.'s design looked cool and friendly, and times when he looked creepy. I wonder what, if any, technology could have done to change that (unless it was intentional).

At the end of the day, I'm glad I finally watched this film. While it's not among my favorites (I only gave it four out of five stars on Netflix), it's a feel-good film which I would recommend watching at least once.

Elliot's older brother Michael (Robert MacNaughton)

*As mentioned in my instant comments, he actually first says, when pointing his finger to the sky, "E.T. home phone."

Instant Comments:
Lol, the boys grab some knives.
Why do they keep the shed light on?
If this were a horror film, I'd be saying, why would you go out there? (like Signs (2002))

Elliot's younger sister Gertie (Drew Barrymore)

Haha, little Drew Barrymore...
All these lights on in his room.
Lol, who's copying who?
That's pretty cool. How they thought he should extend his neck when he felt comfortable.
"Is he a pig? Sure eats like one."
"Get it, Uranus?" "He doesn't get it." x2
Lol. Doesn't like the potato salad. Loves the Coors.

Elliot, Gertie, Michael, and their mother Mary (Dee Wallace)

Oh wow. Psychicly linked.
He first says "E. T. home phone."
But they repeat/correct "E. T. phone home."
I never realized the Amblin logo was from E. T. until seeing the original scene today. Apparently Amblin was founded by Steven Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy, and Frank Marshall; they were Director, Producer, and Production Supervisor for this film, respectively.

Is that the same guy with the jingling keys as from the beginning of the movie?
"Elliott thinks its thoughts." "No, Elliot... Elliot feels his feelings."
It glowed!
The flowers!
"E. T. phone home!"

Michael's friends, left to right: Greg (K.C. Martel), Steve (Sean Frye), and Tyler (Tom Howell)

"I've never driven forward before!"
Hehe, noticeable stunt doubles for the bike scene (when they're in a group of five)
"Come." "Stay." "Ouch." "Ouch." Aww...
"I'll... be... right... here."
How did his mom arrive without being followed?

After starting a riot and before being taken away, Elliot gives Pretty Girl (Erika Eleniak) a big wet kiss.

Ha. A rainbow. ('cause Skittles)
