Partial Plot Summary:
The story is set in Paris and a young girl's cat spends its nights accompanying a cat burglar.

While Zoe, the young girl, wonders where her cat goes at night, the burglar likewise wonders what the cat does in the day. In any case, Zoe's mom Jeanne is a police detective and fails to give Zoe a sufficient amount of attention. The story gradually builds as Jeanne traces a piece of jewelry which the thief has stolen and the investigation leads to her own home. As it's a fairly short film, I'll end the summary there, leaving a good portion of the details and plot for you to watch!

20130620:
This film was a fun and exciting animation. At only seventy minutes long, it is a great, yet film; perfect for those times when you want to relax, but don't have more than two hours to spend relaxing.

Instant Comments:
Haha. At first I was wondering why you would just leave diamonds and jewelry out. As opposed to locked in a case.

Ha, dumb dog.
Ha when he instructs her to go through the zoo, he calls her Zoe. Does that means she told him her name?
Or maybe he figured out some other way, because later he determines she doesn't talk, but at least she can laugh.
Dumb mom.

Trailer:

The final part of the film features the Notre-Dame de Paris. While in Paris, the only picture I snapped of the cathedral is from atop the Eiffel Tower accompanied by an overcast sky. Below I have placed a cropped copy of the photo with adjusted lighting; you'll also find a screenshot of the building as it appears in the film.

Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) is a cars dealer and is having some trouble keeping the business alive. Meanwhile, his father has died and gives him a car. Asking where all the money went, he finds out 3 million is going to an unnamed benefactor. Charlie determines it's gone to a mental institution in Cincinnati, Ohio. Upon visiting to investigate, he finds he has a brother named Raymond (Dustin Hoffman). Feeling entitled to some of the 3 million dollars, Charlie kidnaps his brother Raymond and heads back to California.

Raymond, an autistic savant, is able to make difficult calculations and memorize large amounts of data in a matter of seconds. As an example, Charlie had planned to take Raymond back to California by train, but Raymond refused, citing statistics of plane crashes with every airline with connections between California and Ohio. Consequently, the two take the 1949 Buick Roadmaster which has been left in Charlie's name and ride it all the way to California.

At the beginning of the trip, Charlie gets frustrated with his brother and doesn't know much about autism. Furthermore, Raymond's ability to memorize and calculate goes largely unnoticed by Charlie. One day, however, Charlie realizes the degree of Raymond's ability to quickly memorize and takes Raymond to Las Vegas to make money playing blackjack. While they are able to make a lot of money, the head of security eventually suspect that the Charlie and Raymond were able to seamlessly count a six-card deck. The casino has alerted the other casinos and allowed Raymond to leave with his winning, but ask that he doesn't return.

You'll have to watch the movie to find out what happens next.

20130619, 20130803:
I couldn't finish watching the film in one sitting, because I lost interest about halfway through. I did, however, happily finish the movie about a month later. I find the second half of the film more enjoyable than the first. In particular, we learn why Raymond was placed in a facility and why the movie is called Rain Man.

It was hard for me to watch this film, because Tom Cruise's character was a jerk for a large portion of it. In contrast, I've mostly watched movies where he's amiable. In fact, I had the same problem with Collateral (2004), another film where Cruise's character is a jerk. With that being said, I have not yet seen all of his movies.

On a different note, watching Dustin Hoffman's performance as an autistic savant was absolutely great. As it turns out, Hoffman's portrayal as Raymond got him his second Oscar for "Best Actor in a Leading Role."

Overall, I'd rate Rain Man as a decent film. Unfortunately, it did a poor job of keeping my interest, making it unlikely that I would watch it again. I would, however, recommend that others watch the movie.

Instant Comments:
1a: Title at 12 minutes
1a: Autistic savant
1a: Up to the point in the movie where Susanna leaves the hotel room, I mostly dislike Tom Cruise's character more than sympathize with him
1a: Certainly Cruise's character has a battle to pick with his late father, but he's overly aggressive with his brother; he's insane
1a: It's unbelievable how Charlie and Susanna ever got along, they seem like complete opposites.
1a: "246." "There's four left in the box."

1a: I guess the interesting thing is to watch what Charlie thinks should be normal behavior while Raymond requires certain order in his life.
1a: Paused halfway through around the 70 minute mark. "My card's been rejected?" Kind of boring.
1b: I happened to have paused the film right before the most important scene. The scene happens to explain the reason why the movie is called Rain Man.
1b: The psychiatrist says he's not laying blame and judging, but his tone and choice of words do seem like he's laying blame and judging.
1b: I like how the psychiatrist is a bit of an asshole, because it really helps to redeem Charlie's character.
1b: "C-H-A-R-L-I-E. My main man."
1b: "Tell him Ray." "K-mart sucks."

Jim Gaffigan: Mr. Universe (2012)

20130619:
This is the first time I've seen stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan. I mostly listened to the special in the background. He's got good material. I'll have to watch the show again some time.

Jim Gaffigan

With that being said, a lot of his jokes are based around fictitious scenarios that one would find funny. It's like listening to a sketch. Then there's some jokes which are funny, because they're true.

Overall, his jokes are clean and are generally funny due to content and good delivery. If clean comedians are your cup-of-tea, then I would definitely recommend you check out Jim Gaffigan's Mr. Universe.

In comparison to Aziz Ansari: Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening (2009), I enjoyed Dangerously Delicious more. Though to be fair, some of the jokes in Dangerously Delicious benefited from having watched Intimate Moments; also, I watched the other set four and a half months ago. In any case, if you like stand-up comedy, then you should should try watching both.

20130616:
Since this movie had a lot of talking, I decided to turn on the English subtitles.

Though I had seen it before, I had little memory of the plot and I had no idea where the movie was going.

Additionally, it was nice to be able to pause the movie and discuss what was going on with my friend, because the protagonist Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) leads such a convoluted life.

Jose (Jose Luis de Vilallonga), Mag Wildwood (Dorothy Whitney), and Rusty Trawler (Stanley Adams)

While events and relationships mostly resolved themselves by the end in a happy manner, I dwelled on the fact that the protagonist divorced and left her children. Especially since the stereotype is that the man is usually the one abandoning the family.

Holly plays and sings to 'Moon River.'

20140325:
After watching Breakfast at Tiffany's for a third time, I have a better understanding of it. While it can be strange at times, the movie is worth watching and it's one I'm sure to watch again and again.

My Movie The Rescuers (1977) post.

20130617:
This is the first time I've seen the sequel. Compared to The Rescuers (1977), The Rescuers Down Under felt more adventurous. The music, however, was as memorable as the first movie, which is to say, not memorable at all. On the other hand, I love all the new characters and of course Bianca and Bernard are wonderful.

Despite liking the second movie better, I would recommend you see the first movie before seeing the sequel, because minor plot points in the second movie will make more sense after seeing the first one.

Side note: It was the first movie I watched on my new computer monitor.

Maid in Manhattan (2002)

Overview:
A hotel maid named Marisa Ventura (Jennifer Lopez) tries on a dress and is mistaken by a politician (Ralph Fiennes) as a socialite.

Marisa Ventura (Jennifer Lopez)

Some exciting tension occurs when she has to serve as a maid at a dinner between the politician and hotel guest Caroline Lane (Nastasha Richardson). Everything else about the plot is essentially standard romantic-comedy.

Christopher Marshall (Ralph Fiennes)

20130617:
Overall, Maid in Manhattan is an average or below average romantic comedy. And while Jennifer Lopez is attractive, the movie is not worth watching for this aspect alone.

Carloine Lane (Natasha Richardson)

"You look like you're someone who knows the difference between taupe and caramel." I didn't get it. Apparently "taupe" is a "dark grayish brown or brownish gray."

The Rescuers (1977)

Plot Summary:
An orphan girl named Penny puts a message into a bottle and throws it off the boat where she's being held captive. The boat manages to float its way to shore where its recovered by an international mouse organization called the Rescue Aid Society. One of the members, a female named Miss Bianca volunteers to go and chooses the janitor Bernard to go with her.

Their investigation begins at the orphanage where Penny lived and meet an old cat named Rufus who gives them some useful information. From there, they catch a ride on an albatross named Orville who provides service equivalent to that of an airline service. Upon arriving at Devil's Bayou, the pair of mice enlist the help of a dragonfly named Evinrude who basically functions like a motorboat engine. Once on the boat, they are able to speak with Penny and try to plan a way to get her out.

Unfortunately, things don't go as planned and Miss Bianca and Bernard have to think on their feet. What can two mice possibly do in such a situation? Well, they've already come so far, certainly they'll think of something.

20130616:
I didn't like any of the music in this movie, but the story was interesting and the protagonists Miss Bianca and Bernard make a great team. It should also be noted that the story is a bit darker than many other Disney movies, with the only darker movie I can think of off the top of my head being The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996).

Overall, I personally enjoy watching the older animation style that can be found in this movie and perhaps if you love 2D animation, you'd enjoy watching this movie too. If, however, you're looking for a Disney movie with a ton of memorable songs, you're better off watching some of their other hits.

On a slightly different note, if you've already seen and enjoyed The Rescuers, then you might want to check out the sequel The Rescuers Down Under (1990).

[20130810]

Instant Comments:
The first thing I think about is how modern 3D animated movies use a 2D introduction, and here we have a classic 2D animated movie using a series of still images.

Also much of the background work at the start has this very crude painting style to it.
Though the art direction changes once we get to the meeting of the Rescue Aid Society.
Ha, Hungary makes quite an entrance. Of course I know her name, but she hasn't mentioned it yet.
Miss Bianca's accent is the same as Duchess's accent from The Aristocats (1970). It turns out it's the same voice actor.
"Nothing, just a grumpy old lion."

Penny's sorrow carries a greater gravity than many other Disney stories.
Maybe this crazy woman driver was the inspiration for Cruella de Vil's driving.
"I can't, it'll wrinkle my dress."
"He just went through a red light." "I do that all the time darling." Kiss.
Luke in this movie is voiced by the same voice actor as Napolean in The Aristocats, Pat Buttram.
Within the first page, the only remaining common voice actor is George Lindsey who does Rabbit in this movie and Lafayette in The Aristocats.

Within the remaining credits, there is a person by the name of Ruth Buzzi who goes uncredited in both: German mouse in this movie and Frou-Frou the Carriage Horse (singing voice) in The Aristocats.
It seems her water vehicle might be some sort of pop-pop bot. Orville goes in one end and out the other.
Ha, in his attempt to get the mice, he's playing the one mystery song on the organ.
Bambi and his mom! I suppose those might be the same birds from Bambi too. Then again, it's possible Disney just draws their animals the same way for every movie.

I recall having watched it as a kid.

Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)

The story centers around Darius Britt (Aubrey Plaza) who just started an internship at a magazine company. One day, in a round table looking for article ideas, writer Jeff (Jake Johnson), wants to take an assignment regarding a classified ad. The ad is looking for someone to accompany the person to go back in time and among other things, says "Safety not guaranteed." Jeff's boss Bridget (Mary Lynn Rajskub) approves and Jeff takes two interns with him, Darius and Arnau.

Kenneth (Mark Duplass) and Darius Britt (Aubrey Plaza)

Driving to the P.O. Box address listed in the ad, Jeff tells his interns that he's actually going to try and hook up with a girl he used to like. While they still pursue the story, Jeff doesn't take the article seriously. In any case, the three begin their investigation by waiting at the P.O. Box address to discover who it belongs to. Their snooping eventually leads to a Kenneth Calloway (Mark Duplass).

While Jeff's attempt at interviewing Kenneth fails, Darius's attempt at befriending Kenneth succeeds, due to a mixture of her personality and wit, and he accepts her as a candidate to go with him back in time. Keeping his mission a secret, Kenneth starts by training Darius and the training brings them emotionally closer.

What will happen between Jeff and his love interest? What will happen between Kenneth and Darius? Is Kenneth just crazy, or can he really go back in time? And finally, what many details did I leave out? You'll have to watch the movie!

20130613:
This is a sweet movie. The last movie I enjoyed in a similar way was (500) Days of Summer (2009). The last movie that I saw in a similar genre was Lars and the Real Girl (2007), which was good, but I find (500) Days of Summer closer in terms of lasting impression. If I were to continue thinking of movies with a similar feel, I'd name Conversations with Other Women (2005). Having seen this movie most recently, I'd say it's my favorite among the movies I've named, with (500) Days of Summer being a worthy contestant. If I get a chance I'll watch that one again and see how it compares to Safety Not Guaranteed.

Instant Comments:
Aubrey Plaza is cute.

Ha. The people at the party notice him and they just slowly follow him.
Haha! "Stormtroopers don't know anything about lasers or time travel. They're blue collar workers."
"This is fucking intense!" "We're going 15 miles an hour."
Wow, seeing the guy break down after being rejected was intense.
