20101031:
This contained the "spider-walk scene." Awesome.
I thought it was strange how there were many moments where I thought the demon would attack, but didn't. I guess that creates the moment. Well not much else to say, need to get to work.

The Seventh Seal (1957)
20101031:
The movie is in Swedish with English subtitles. I wasn't paying too much attention, but I got the gist of the plot. I probably would have enjoyed it if I had paid more attention. I'll have to watch it again some day.

District 9 (2009)
20101031:
This movie starts slowly and introduces the events in the style of a documentary and found footage.
The design of the aliens, known by the humans as "Prawns," immediately captured my interest. When the movie begins to move away from the documentary-style presentation, I began to take more interest. In particular, I enjoyed the action sequences.
In regards to the ending, while I wouldn't have minded a vague ending, one in which we don't exactly know the fate of the protagonist, I was unsatisfied with the way the movie ended.
Overall, it was a great movie.
Comparison:
Personally, I like both Avatar (2009) and Star Trek (2009) better than District 9.
Star Trek has more action than District 9. Avatar, though has about as much action has District 9, has a lot more going on and has an epic battle scene. Coincidentally, all three movies were released in 2009 (I didn't realize until after comparing them).
[20101031 Assumed Post Date][20181221 Edit]
20181221, 20181223:
Watching the movie again today, I felt differently about the beginning of the movie than implied by my notes above. I suppose, however, that I benefited from knowing the protagonist's fate, and was able to enjoy the movie from the beginning. In particular, I paid attention to his personality and attitudes at the start of the film, noticed how he got infected (30 minute mark), and was keen on the intensity and suspense surrounding his transformation (especially 31 to 37 minute mark) .
Overall, District 9 is a better movie than I led myself to believe from my notes alone.
Netflix determined the movie for me as a 98% match. I decided to give the movie neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down.

2a: This scene where he tugs at his fingernails... My mind flashes to similar scenes in other movies: Black Swan and Ex Machina.
2a: I paused the movie at the 37 minute mark.
2b: Wow. Their treatment of him and of "Prawns" is terrible. In particular, I feel like their experiments should have concluded with shooting dead carcasses. Why was it necessary to have Wikus shoot a "Prawn"?
2b: Hehe. This guy's phone.
2b: It's a little silly. Their inability to track him seems laughable.
2b: Yikes. A finger.
2b: "I thought you said not to kill anyone." "He shot at me."
2b: That car just has a key in it? Lol.
2b: Huh. I don't remember this part. (Wikus knocks Christopher out and gets shot down)
2b: I feel like Christopher should have told a white lie.
2b: I wonder why Wikus didn't fight back earlier.

The Evil Dead (1981)
20101031:
This movie was a mix of suspenseful type of scary and just plain ridiculous gore. The mood is something along the lines of Suspiria (1977). Between the two I like Suspiria better.
Great scene: "The Evil Dead" tree.
I wasn't surprised by the ending.
The evil that was possessing everybody certainly had a sense of humor and took its time.
In the end, it's not exactly my kind of movie, but I thought I'd give it a try.

Hahaha. "Well it might not be that bad." "No." "Actually it might be kinda nice." "Yeah."
"This thing is solid as a rock."
What's the point of locking a door if you're going to leave the key at the top of the frame in plain sight.
Why would you walk outside if you think someone is stalking you? Worse than that, she goes deep into the woods. "I know someone's out there." Survival of the fittest.
I decided at the 32 minute mark to watch some South Park instead. I'll resume the movie later.

Frankenstein (1931)
20101031:
Some parts of the movie seem out of place. Others are great. I haven't read the book, but I don't think the movie follows to closely, as I feel the book would carry a much stronger theme in regards to the creation of life and death, in particular to the creator and the created. The movie had a bit of this, but didn't fully capture it.
Overall, I enjoyed the movie considering the time period it was made in. Along those lines I enjoyed it as a classic, but not as a movie that I particularly desire to see again. It does seem like a very historical type of film.
Credits:
Opening credits leave the actor under the list of "Players" for the monster as "?"
Then in the closing credits the title reads "A good cast is worth repeating..." and also lists the actor for "The Monster."

The attitude of the women is a little frightening. She's just so dead scared or something.

What a great zombie comedy. Great cast.
Opening credits is great. Love the animation of the words.
Nice plot, with the rules.
I'd definitely recommend people to watch this movie.
It even has Bill Murray (as himself) in it!
I think it's hilarious how Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) would just leave weapons behind. After killing a zombie I'd pick up my weapons...
Besides the three Resident Evil movies, I don't think I've seen any other zombie movies. Tonight I'll have a zombie movie marathon. Zombieland on the big screen was a great way to kick things off. Next up, Night of the Living Dead (1968).

Dances with Wolves (1990)
20101030:
This is a great movie. It's long, but it doesn't seem long. Furthermore, even though it's a long movie, there was enough going on that the movie held my interest the entire way through. In particular, I spent half the time enjoying the scenery.
On a different note, some people belittle Avatar (2009) as just being Dances with Wolves set in space. While I can see the similarities, I don't think Avatar was just a rip-off.
Rather, I simply think the underlying theme dictates the overall story. Explicitly, we have the protagonist grows up in a certain culture, gets drawn into a new mysterious culture, realizes the importance of this other culture, and defends the new culture against his former culture. Now that I think about it, The Last Samurai (2003) also follows this plot structure.
[20130829 Edited]
20140228:
Watching this movie again today, I couldn't help but focus on how Avatar (2009) isn't a copy of this movie. Overall, I'd say the two are only similar thematically, but have distinctive plot differences. In particular, Lieutenant Dunbar is consistently loyal to the Sioux. In contrast, Jake initially joins the Na'vi out of duty and forced to betray them, despite his deeper feelings.

But considering she's been in several movies, many of which have appeared on Netflix, I've hardly seen any (three movies over six years).
In any case, I didn't remember how the movie ended, but I definitely liked the ending.

Raising Arizona (1987)
Partial Plot Summary:
A criminal named H.I. (Nicolas Cage) meets a policewoman named Ed (Holly Hunter) and eventually the two get married.
The couple want to have children, but it turns out that Ed is infertile. Then one day they see a set of quintuplets on television belonging to a couple in Arizona. Desperate for a child of their own, they decide to drive over to the family's house and kidnap one of the babies.
20101027:
This movie has some pretty funny parts and overall is a decently funny movie. In particular, it's funnier than than Paul Blart: Mall Cop.
While the ending is open to interpretation, I took it quite positively.
Overall, I would recommend anyone watch this comedy at least once. Personally, I plan watch the movie again, because I think there will be something special to be gained from watching it a second time.

The Last of the Mohicans (1920)
20101027:
I watched the first 10 minutes yesterday (20101026).
I've seen silent cartoons before, but I think this is the first silent film I've seen. Interesting. I wonder if this is the oldest movie I've seen now. Prior to this was Citizen Kane (1941), oh wait, actually Gone with the Wind (1939). So yes, this is the oldest movie I've seen.
The way you have to interpret the film is much different than movies nowadays. In this movie, sometimes the actors' or actresses' expressions look funny. I wonder if, even though silent, the film could have been made any better. Was this a top-notched movie of the time, or was it just one of those okay movies? Was the film the way it was due to the era it was made in? I'd have to watch more movies from the era to know.
I did like the end of the movie better than the beginning.

Superman: The Movie (1978)
20101025:
With work around the corner, I couldn't think of much to say. Christopher Reeve played the dual role of Clark Kent and Superman well.
Instant Comments:
1: Wow, there was a lot of exposition. From Jor-el on Krypton, a snapshot of Clark as a teenager, and then to the Daily Planet.
A: "Oh, of course not, Lois. I mean why would anyone want a total stranger to look like a fool?"
A: Lol that scene where Lois is able to continue moving forward simply by holding hands with Clark and then begins to fall when their hands separate... (ridiculous under various possible assumptions about how Superman's flight may work)
1: I can sense the age of the film, particularly from the scenes that involve Superman flying. And more so from the scenes where he's taking Lois Lane out. It was kind of ridiculous for Superman to reveal his weaknesses, whether explicitly or implicitly. Oh well.
1: Yes, that sort of ridiculous gets mentioned as a flaw in the story, whereas him flying around the Earth to turn back time gets to fall under science-fiction rules of possibility.

The Secret Garden (1993)
20101025:
I watched the first 15 minutes of the movie yesterday (20101024). But I finished the movie in pieces today. So the initial acting when the kids are unhappy comes off as seeming forced. The scenes where they are happy are much more believable. I feel like if I were to pick up the book, I'd imagine in my head much different characters and dialogue. (Speaking of books, I should finish Ender's Shadow... but getting back to the comments...) Some of the narration was out of place. There wasn't a good lead in to the narration, or some of the narration was unexpected. Then there was one narrated line, that felt like more was going to be said, and it just ended. Narration in movies should be handled carefully.
The movie has its cute moments. But overall is just an okay movie.

Ponyo (2008)
Overview:
A magical goldfish named Brunhilde escapes her home and gets caught in a bottle.
Luckily, a young boy named Sosuke finds and frees her. Discarding the name Brunhilde, she calls herself Ponyo.
As the story progresses, Ponyo's father Fujimoto manages to find and bring Ponyo home. However, he's unable to keep her there as she uses her magic, transforms into a girl, and escapes for a second time.
Meanwhile, as some balance in the world has been upset, the Moon begins drawing near to the Earth and a great storm begins to brew. In any case, Ponyo (in human form) reunites with Sosuke. That, however, is just half the story...
[20160713]
20101024:
I love this movie!
[20160709 Edit]
Instant Comments:
3: I had forgotten how cute Ponyo was. Lying there on the jellyfish. Haha.
3: It's funny to see Sosuke try and pull Ponyo out. Would you pull a real fish like that? Haha.
3: While trying to reach Sosuke's father:
3: "I used to be a fish." - Ponyo
3: "Thanks Ponyo will make it bigger." - Sosuke
3: Ponyo squishes the babies face after running across the water.
3: Huh... the stuff that was normal-sized shrunk?
3=20101024
20110222:
I enjoyed watching the film in Japanese audio with English audio.
On a different note, some time during the film I laughed when I remembered a comment a friend once made: Ponyo is an ugly looking goldfish. Thinking about his/her comment, I supposed he/she was right; she looks nothing like a goldfish, and yet apparently that's what she is.
Most Memorable Scene: [20110427] Ponyo runs pass Lisa and jumps onto Sosuke.
[20160709 Edit]
Instant Comments:
4: I fell asleep through a lot of the movie.
4: The first time I fell asleep was some time after Ponyo was riding on top of a gigantic gold fish.
4: I woke when Sosuke's mom was approaching Ponyo, but Ponyo ran right underneath her and straight to Sosuke.
4: It's so magical that Sosuke recognizes Ponyo.
4: I fell asleep again after Sosuke's mom left him and Ponyo to go back to the senior center.
4: I woke after the movie ended.
4: I should count how many times the theme song plays.
4=20110222
20160328:
Watching the movie this time around, I found the ending didn't have as much impact on me as before.
I thought his love for Ponyo was somehow supposed to be tested. Was his trial simply to arrive at the senior center?
Regardless, I love the movie's themes and music.
Actually, despite how much I enjoy the movie, I'd have to believe that either the movie failed to deliver a comprehensible sequence of events or that some of the scenes were simply lost in translation.
[20160330][20160709 Edit]
20160709:
While going through the movie for screenshots (20160709), I rewatched the ending and I personally would have omitted the scene where the seniors and Lisa are shown sound and safe. That way, the scene where Fujimoto chases after Sosuke would seem more threatening, but only until we realize he was in fact looking out for Ponyo's best interest.
However, as it is, we're already shown where Fujimoto's feelings lie and the aforementioned scene simply brings confusion.

Only the Strong (1993)
A former soldier named Louis Stevens returns to his former high school and during his visit beats up a local drug dealer. With the entire student body responding positively to Stevens victory, Stevens former teacher Mr. Kerrigan proposes that Stevens teach capoeira to a group of delinquents.
The students are initially resistant to practicing capoeira and Stevens strategically lets them go, holding just one of the students back. They train through the entire day and even through the evening. By the next day, the student successfully uses what he learns to defend himself against another student. This convinces the majority of the class to start training.
Eventually, Stevens introduces the students to capoeira music. During the class, Stevens trys to convince Orlando, one of the students, to play the berimbau. Orlando, however, responds poorly and leaves the class. In the evening, Stevens finds Orlando and questions his behavior. Orlando still gives Stevens attitude and eventually his cousin Silverio, a local drug lord, shows up. Silverio also knows capoeira and fights Stevens. During the fight, Silverio's men clap and chant, disrupting Stevens rhythm and he loses the fight. At the end of the fight, Silverio declares that Stevens capoeira is good enough to teach Orlando.
Orlando joins in on the training and eventually Stevens takes the class on a trip to the beach. During the trip, Orlando reveals he was suppose to be doing a job. Upon returning from the trip, Silverio is waiting for Orlando. Stevens and Silverio get into another dispute, ending with threats from Silverio. Eventually Silverio and a couple of his men make their way onto the school grounds and put Mr. Kerrigan's room on fire. Oh man... to watch this movie again... haha. I came in at the point where the students have been brought to the fire station.

I would have to be honest and say that some parts of this movie are cheesy, while other parts have their fill of poor acting and dialogue. The music, however, is solid and the movie as a whole is enjoyable, provided you're a fan of capoeira. If you've never been exposed to capoeira before, then I would recommend you don't watch this movie, because I wouldn't want you to have the wrong impression of a great martial art. If you're a fan of capoeira, then you should watch the movie, because there are only so many movies out there dedicated to just capoeira.
